Abscesses are caused from gastric leaks. When fluid/food seep into your abdomen your body reacts by infection which can be fatal if a drain is not placed or surgery is performed. It also requires that antibiotics are started. I not only had a abscess but my leak also caused my lung to partially Collaspe.

I am with Alsa and Dr. Higa. Unfortunately, I am the mist of a gastric leak. I was sleeved 6/11/14 my leak was found two days after surgery due to an abscess. I spent nearly 60 days inpatient and now am on home IV and IV TPN ( nutrition). I have experienced a Collapsed lung, spend a day in ICU, over 6 surgeries, and my leak is still not healed. It is my opinion the risks of a leak are higher than 3% across the board so please be sure this is a risk you and your family are willing to take. If you are the sole provider in your household know with a leak it can take months to a year to resolve and throughout the process one is very, very, Ill. May The Lord bless you with making this decision.

Post Op June 2014 Sleevers

so far I think you are the only one I have seen. How are you feeling these days, any better? Frankly, it's kind of of bad dream. I felt pretty good until 48 hrs after my VSG, then bam! 102 degree fever. Pain in my left chest and arm, extremely high heart rate, severe nausea, and labored breathing. I Immediately called Surgeon ( who I might add is one of the bestIn the nation) I was readmitted and in for surgery the next day. No leak found but I had all the signs. Contamination in abdomen so a drain was added. After, nearly a week of severe nausea and pain and two more gastric leak tests, my leak was found.I'm finally home with home health and TPN. Its estimated that I will be on TPN for approximately 4 weeks. If all goes well with my leak healing. Let me say, I was fully aware of my risks. But, 0.035 % were pretty good odds. I'm 38, no major health risks and BMI just surpassed the 40% requirement, so I thought my risks were even lower. But, nothing can prepare you for a leak. They are unpredictable and evil as hell. I know I will get through this. I'm am blessed to have a support system and to currently be a stay at home mom. However, mentally this has pushed me to my limits.I apologize to everyone for being a Debbie Downer, I swear to you there is nothing worse than severe nausea. Please use this surgery as your final and only means to weight loss. I'm reminded of the saying,"nothing taste as good as thin feels"To me, that is a load of crap!My opinion is, "Being thin feels terrible if the only way you get there is because you are unable to eat"To the majority of all fellow sleever's who have had no complications. Cherish this blessing, protect and care for your sleeve like your life depended on it. Don't abuse it! -

dreamondreamer replied to SnohoGal98296's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just touching base after a very difficult past two weeks . Surgery date: June 11th 2014 with Dr. Higa at Fresno Heart and Surgical hospital. Leak found June 14th, 2014. I'm 38 no major health issues except obesity. For those of you who have suffered a leak, how did you get through it? How long did you feel terrible and how long until leak was healed. Any advice or encouragement welcome. To everyone considering surgery, remember there are risks and use surgery as your last option to weight loss. -

Aman, Yes!!!! We are both scheduled for June 11th, correct? I'm so sorry to hear about your previous GYN issues. I have considered that surgery too, but I am hoping for relief from losing some belly weight. Do you have a required liquid diet prior to OUR surgery date? -
