    How about some NSVs!?!?

I had my 6 month post-op appointment today and my NP took all the diagnosis for morbid obesity and obesity off of my chart. It now lists me as overweight!

    How about some NSVs!?!?

For the first time ever, I can put my laptop in my lap!

    Forget to eat?

I didn't have this problem until I had kidney stone surgery in late April. Now I have to set an alarm to remind me to eat breakfast and even then, it doesn't always work. And if I forget to eat breakfast, I usually end up forgetting to eat lunch, also!
  4. I was off of my diabetes meds when I left the hospital. Pre-op, I was on extended release Metformin and Byetta. My fasting blood sugar was running in the high 150's. Now, my fasting runs in the upper 70s! I love it!
  5. Hello, everyone! I hope you don't mind me chiming in on this discussion as I had a gastric bypass rather than a sleeve. I have been in a stall for the last couple of weeks. Gaining and losing the same couple of pounds. Yesterday, I put on some yoga pants that I hadn't put on for a while. I had bought them a size smaller than I was wearing at the time so I expected them to be VERY snug. Imagine my surprise when they slid right on with no problems what so ever! So, don't get stressed out, your body has been through a LOT. It needs time to recover! And even if you can't tell anything is happening, believe me, it is! The weight will come off! So, take a deep breath, go drink a glass of water, and relax! You've got this! Your doing great!

    Throwing out clothes

I also donate my too big clothes. It is a very emotional thing to do. I was almost in tears, it stressed me so much. But once I was done, it felt very liberating! I can look into my mostly empty closet and know that the clothes inside all fit me now and someone else is benefiting from my success (or from my loss!)
  7. I'm expected to exercise a minimum of an hour a day. That's according to the rules of my surgery team. That was started the first week post-op. I didn't have to do it all in one go, but I was expected to get in an hour a day. I'm 6 months out from my RNY and probably walk about two hours a day now. When I don't, I definitely see a difference in how I feel, in my appetite and in my weight loss. I will still lose some, but it definitely slows way down.
  8. For me, it was nearly ending up in the hospital due to complications from the two diabetes meds I had been on for years. Two of my doctors suggested RNY to get me off the meds. I started this journey last May and had my surgery on December 10th. I'm 97 pounds since I started and 53 since my surgery. Best of all, NO diabetes medicine!

    Beginning Cardio

I was told that by the end of my first week post-op I should be walking an hour a day. That being said, I wasn't expected to do it all in one go. I was told to break it up into walks of 10-15 minutes at a time.

    Does fit bit help?

I have a fitbit Flex and love it! I love when it starts vibrating on my wrist to tell me that I've met my step goal for the day. Gives me a positive outlook even if the rest of the day has been rotten

    Previous Surgeries preventing WLS

I had open gallbladder surgery in 1980 and a laparoscopic hysterectomy in 2009. My Bariatric surgeon told me that due to adhesions he might have to change from the gastric bypass to a gastric sleeve. He was able to do the bypass, but said that I would have come out of surgery with one or the other.

    Gurgling & bloated tummy

I don't know, but, I'm sure interested in the answer!

    Anybody older doing this?

I was 19 days shy of my 59th birthday when I had my RNY in December. I'm coming up on 6 months post-op and have lost 65% of my excess weight. This is one of the best decisions that I have ever made!
  14. I lost about 30 pounds leading up to my pre-op diet (I had a 6 month insurance mandated weight loss program) Pre-op was 3-4 protein shakes a day and 2-3 servings of non-starchy veggies. I lost 12 pounds in two weeks.
  15. RNY December 10, 2014. Starting weight 245 (May 2014). Day of surgery 204. Currently 152. I'll be six months post-op June 10th.

    Magnesium Citrate!?

Get it very cold, use a straw, hold your breath and drink as fast as you can!
  17. People actually look at me when they talk to me now. But, I have to say, I have been treated much worse by people in the past for being a stay at home mom than for being over weight. Apparently, obesity is more socially acceptable than staying home with your children. (this was in the far distance past, my children are now 34,28,and 25)

As of now, while I'm sure I'll occasionally have the starchy carbs, I'm not planning on them being a regular part of my food plan. I'll have to see how beef and pork work out.

    Gastric Bypass Sucess Story

RNY stands for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. NSV stands for Non scale Victory, such as smaller clothes, off meds, etc.

    Kidney stones

I believe that the ingredient in the Crystal Light is sodium citrate. The Dr said that it's the citrate that's important.

    Kidney stones

I had surgery two weeks ago to remove multiple kidney stones. My calcium levels have been high since before surgery. My urologist told me that kidney stones are a side effect of gastric bypass surgery. From what I read, pre-op, we have more of the chemical that prevents the stones and less of the chemical that causes them. Studies have shown that post-op that switches to having more of the one that causes the stones. The urologist recommend drinking Crystal Light. It apparently contains the chemical that prevents kidney stones!
  22. My surgeon requires all his patients to take either a prescription PPI or an over the counter acid reducer for life. I haven't had a single instance of acid reflux or heartburn and I'm almost six months out from gastric bypass surgery.

Is it CHEATING or is it a CHOICE?

I'm not quite six months out from my RNY and I'm still not cleared for beef, pork or starchy carbs. That being said, when my son got married at the end of April, I made the CHOICE to have a few bites of the wedding cake. Some friends asked me later if I felt guilty about "cheating". I told them that I didn't cheat, that I had made the decision to take part in a wonderful occasion to the fullest I was able. It was a happy decision on my part as my son and his wife made a point to choose a restaurant for the reception that I could easily find food that was on my current dietary plan. It tickled them to no end that I celebrated with them completely! And if asked by my NP at my appointment in June if I have been compliant with my food plan, I will tell her all about the cake and I can guarantee that she'll tell me I did the right thing.
