    Let's talk about body dysmorphia

    Hi Amber, Yes, this is common experience for many of us. I knew I was overweight. The term morbidly obese was hard to hear. Honestly, I hid from cameras and didn’t spend much time looking in a full body mirror. I was not seeing my self correctly pre surgery. It took time for my mind to catch up with the rapid weight loss. I finally saw myself correctly after goal and my weight settled. A vet gave me a good suggestion. Place a photo of yourself at your goal/low weight on your bathroom mirror. Look at it as you get ready in the morning. I used a counselor to get past this issue. She said some people eventually see themselves correctly, some may take years and some never do. I see myself as smaller. I have confidence and feel comfortable in my own skin. (I should say loose skin) I’m maintaining five years out. It’s ridiculous that a five-pound weight gain can make me feel like I am at my high weight all over again. The fear of weight gain is still something I’m working on. I am better with this as time progresses. I’ve had to learn to trust myself more.

    Want to gain some weight back

    Sweating

    After surgery, I’m cold most of the time. I now look forward to shedding all my layers of clothing and showing skin in the summer. Air conditioning and grocery store refrigerated/frozen food isles are an issue. Once I get cold it takes me quite a while to warm back up.

It’s not the same as pre surgery. It’s much more manageable. I feel the sensation of full on smaller meals.     FAILED SLEEVE

    You are not alone in having a weight gain. I want to kick anyone who says bariatrics is the easy way out. This is work. Getting back on track is overcoming the mental battles. If you are having stress/emotional eating problems, you may want to read some books on this topic or work with a counselor. None of us get to avoid life stresses. Its finding ways to cope without using food. Getting back on track may be hard but, being over weight is hard. Suffer the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Go back to bariatric real food stage basics. Log your food, Stay within your weight loss calories and macros, hydrate and exercise. If you need help with your plan/calories/macros call your dietician for advice. There is a search button on the top left of this forum.   8. You’re not alone in how you feel right now. Many of us have compared weight loss, experience stalls and felt we were not where we should be. Time to stop doing this and focus on working on yourself. Are you way behind? No, we all lose weight at different rates. If you are following your plan and your loss is slow its fine. If there is room for improvement, then make changes. What did my first six months look like? It does not matter. What does matter is following your plan and getting the most out of your first year. You have six more months to go. You have evaluated what your first six months and decided to tighten things up. That all any of us can do is strive to improve. Did you continue to lose weight after six months? Yes, for most of us weight loss slows down as you progress. You are trouble shooting this new phase. I also want you to know, I can still lose weight five years out from surgery. When I have a ten-pound gain, I go back to bariatric basics and bring my weight back down.     Considering Surgery

    Ask if your local bariatric surgeon has an information seminar. Your surgeon may recommend a procedure. My internal organs shutting down from diabetic ketoacidosis. My heart stopped, and they brought me back. I wish it didn’t take that moment to understand my weight was slowly killing me. I looked at how many times I’ve lost weight then had regain with extra. I needed a long-term solution to get my health back. I was sleeved in 2014. Five years out, no complications, no regret, and maintaining in the 130’s.

    What Do I Get/Qualify for?

    You would have to call your insurance company to see what procedures would be covered. Also ask what criteria you would have to meet to qualify for surgery. My disclaimer – (newbies) Its normal to be excited and a bit obsessive about the process and practicing basics in your honeymoon phase ***its normal** this topic is more for people maintaining and if they are riding a fine line between bariatric lifestyle and disordered thinking. It’s something that does not affect all of us after goal. Logging and weight our food, putting thought into buying groceries and how you fuel your body, what foods are allowed and not allowed on our plans, researching new diet/fitness health trends and knowing what’s works to lose the weight and stay healthy. Here is the double edge sword for many of us that have been formerly obese and fear weight gain. Where is the fine line between bariatric life style and disordered thinking about food and weight??? Letting go of the “bariatric weight loss rules” Scared the hell out of me after goal. The fear of weight gain kept me in check, But I noticed the fear was not in a normal range. I needed to relax and not feel guilty about indulging within reason. It’s taken me time not to totally freak out with a weight gain. I learned to maintain my weight maintaining bounce range. I had to learn to trust myself. Balance with this is something I’m still working on years out. I would like your thoughts on the fear of weight gain after goal/maintaining. Is it a healthy or unhealthy range for you?

    Carbohydrate intake

    As you can tell, all plans look different. Can you call your dietician and get clarification? Ask for calorie range, carb, protein and fats goals. When you log your food in baraitastic or myfitnesspal it will go by grams of carbs per day.

  19. To me it means your golden year is your best time frame for weight loss. Weight loss surgery restriction is fantastic in your first months. Your surgery restriction will become less over time and weight loss slows down. “Taking advantage” means don’t waste this time frame. Follow your surgeons’ plan/instructions. Log your food, hit your calories and macro goals for the day, hydrate, exercise/activity and make behavior changes for the long term. We cannot control the “luck factor” Sex, age, medical issues, medications, complications, hormones and body physiology. What you can control is “working your plan” Decide how lax or strict you want to work this. Decide what you want out of your first year.

    To tell or not to tell

    Social media, this is the only place I talk about bariatrics. I told my husband, kids and my supportive friends. There is plenty of information promoting bariatrics. My input is not needed. I don’t want or feel the need to be the spokesmen for bariatrics. Google About 3,930,000 results (0.52 seconds) Is your weight loss surgery really going to be a secret? You can’t hide rapid weight loss. People are going to speculate, and some may confront you about weight loss surgery. It’s your choice on what you want to disclose. People are going to make weight loss a main topic in your conversations. It will stop after your weight settles around goal.

    Where am I going wrong?

    I’m not going to slam this board or judge how people work their plans. To each their own. Do what works for you. You’re doing fantastic! Dialing in your plan takes time. You are upping your calories and getting results. All surgeons’ instructions vary. At Six months out with the sleeve, I was at 900 to 1000 calories. Find your range that works with your body physiology and your health issues. When in doubt, ask your team.
