Shortgal, My husband and I are both banded. With only 1 fill, I don't have a lot of sticking issues. But my husband, two years out does have problems with breads and he loves biscuits and gravy. I hadn't thought about this product for him until I thought about ME. Am I awful or what? So in our case, I wasn't so concerned about calories of this verses calories of that, but simply trying to find a bread-like product that will go down, of course low carb and high fiber are a huge plus. And knowing that we would only eat 1 biscuit I knew regardless, the calories would be lower than pre-band. LOL

I give up, even editing didn't correct the paragraphing.

When I typed the above post, it really did have paragraphs and the recipe was not in paragraph form... I'm not sure why it posted as it did.

Well, it seems that math isn't the only thing I'm bad at... my husband reminded me that I had some in the cabinet that I bought about 6 months ago that had never been opened. Yeah, before I decided to look into surgery... So here's the skinny, I weighed a 1/2 oz and it's just about 1/4 cup of dry mix. This morning a made 1/2 of a recipe of the pancakes and cooked only 1 pancake. I make them a little thinner than the recipe (more like a crepe) and I added a little Splenda. Keep in mind this is not a product you can use with low fat or fat free products, it needs the fat to make it edible, without it... hmmm shall we say sawdust? But it is very low carb. So that being said here's what I made: 1 C Carbquik = 240 calories 1 egg = 80 1 Tbsp heavy cream = 50 4 T butter = 400 water splenda Total calories =770 (yes, I see you all cringing) according to the box, that would be 5 servings (remember I cut the recipe in 1/2) And for ME this is 10 servings. So my pancake was 77 calories and about 1 carb. Yes I can see you guys whipping out your calculators and adding the fat grams. LOL I topped it with: 1 Tbsp cream cheese (whipped) 45 calories 1/4 C blueberries with spenda and Xanthan Gum warmed. 20 calories So my fabulous breakfast was 142 calories + About 5 carbs. I subtract fiber. This time I didn't experiment with adding whey powder to boost the protein, but I usually drink a couple of protein drinks per day to ensure I meet my protein requirements. I'm not trying to convince anyone else to come to the dark side LOL, but I've found that I can eat high fat items and loose weight. Now I didn't say I can live off high fat items alone. But at the end of the day I find that while my low carb diet isn't low fat, it really isn't high fat either because I'm eating less of everything, and that includes fat. I also find that if I eat regular (not low fat or fat free) products I'm satisfied longer. I think I now know the answer to my original question, I didn't have any "sticking" issues with the Carbquik, the fiber must take care of that. And it was a nice change of pace from my routine breakfast... usually an egg or low carb SlimFast. So for those who think they just can't live the rest of their lives without biscuits and gravy, well, now you have a low carb option, that might not stick. I'm getting a fill today, so I'll tell you in a few days if fill number 2 makes a difference. LOL I wouldn't consider it an everyday product... for one thing it's expensive, for another, who has the time?

I know it worked well for me when I was low carbing, I wasn't counting fat or calories or anything but carbs. I just hate to buy the stuff if it's going to "stick." As I recall, the texture wasn't smooth like regular Bisquick, it had a lot of fiber. I'm going to guess it would not ball up. I think I'll risk buying it again.

There are 27 servings in a 1 lb box. So, a little more than 1/2 oz. per serving?? I'm so not good at math. I think the pancakes were 3 pancakes per serving. Of course, I wouldn't be able to hold more than one now. But I was thinking of using whey Protein to replace the milk to boost the protein. When I low carbed I could use this and still lose weight as long as I kept my daily carbs under 60. So I'm thinking with the band AND low carb, I should REALLY do well. My dietician is big on low carb anyway.

NOT Losing Weight anymore and Trying sooo hard

Muscle weighs more than fat by volumn so you are probably losing inches. That's better in my book! -
Sorry, I didn't mean to post this on this forum.

A few years ago I used to buy a product on-line called Carbquik. It's a low carb version of Bisquick type mix. It's made from flour but sort of like Splenda, they left out the bad stuff. Anyway, I'm thinking about ordering it again, but wanted to know if anyone has used it since being banded and if it causes the same "sticking" issues. Here's a link if anyone is interested. Tova Industries Carbquik Bake Mix Thanks for any info.

Conversations you hear sitting in your doc's waiting room
Ellisa replied to BRANDYK's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sorry ladies, it's not just a Down Under thing. I rarely hear conversations in any doctor's office either. Not do I converse with others in the waiting room. And the few conversations that are heard are regarding current events or the weather. LOL -
Congrats! The waiting is over, the rest is a piece of cake!

It depends on whether or not there's an exclusion on the policy. Call the number on the back of the card and ask if weight loss surgery is covered on your policy, specifically lap band surgery. Once you find that out, then look for a surgeon and facility that is in network for the HMO. I have Anthem BC/BS PPO, and there was no exclusion. I found a surgeon who was in network (at the time, he isn't now) and it was approved.

On the plus side... I had to have my yearly "mammy," last week... there's "wiggle room" now. Next year probably I won't have anything to "mam."

My husband is a very successful bandster. Lost over 140 lbs in two years. He can eat smaller portions of what he ate before and lose weight. He's a guy, so he can get away with more and his problem was more quantity than quality to begin with. Keep in mind, he loves the proper foods, meats, fish, veggies, fruit etc. and always has eaten that kind of food. We've been pretty much sugar-free years for years. He drinks (diet) soda once in a while. He doesn't eat much Pasta because it sticks sometime, but he does eat it once in a while. He also eats some (whole grain) bread. He's never once slimed or PB'd. But he knows when to quit eating. He gets a couple of hicups if he takes an extra bite; and he hates that (it hurts) so he's learned to eat one less. Everyone is different. Some people can lose by just eating less of what they used to eat. DH has low carbed (Atkins style) and lost 100 lbs. (several years ago, regained it of course), and if he had to do that to lose, he would. We do eat "mostly" low carb" but not nearly as strict as we had to be without the band. It just gives us a little "wiggle room." Now it remains to be seen how strict I will have to get to continue losing. -
One thing to keep in mind is that muscle weighs more than fat. So a good exercise program (one where you build muscle) could help you to keep the BMI up while you eat more healthfully.

Congratulations! I know how excited you are. You'll be on the banded side before you know it!

Questions from others while eating out!

Some restaurants will allow 1/2 portions, if you request them. But even 1/2 portions gives me an extra meal to take home most of the time. -
I understand the waiting frustration, I think that was the absolute hardest part for me. But once I got my approval and the light was at the end of the tunnel, it got better. I hope it all works out for you to have it this month.

Candle, I was referring to the (whispering here) gas. LOL

Anyone wish they had chosen bypass??

Just my two cents, I would not opt for RNY given a choice. But that being said, I was prepared to do an open RNY 4 years ago, but was denied by insurance. Both surgeries can be very successful, but both require carefully following the rules. As for the cost, RNY is more costly upfront, but the band ensures the surgeon will keep seeing you for years upon years, so long term, he/she will probably come out ahead on the band. There are certainly times when RNY or sleeve are better choices. When I had my surgery I had to stay overnight (due to distance). The lady in the room had RNY. We had the same surgeon and I knew he preferred the band or sleeve. But this lady traveled out of the country frequently and the doctor thought the RNY would be better for her. I would guess, that was in case she had to have an emergency unfill. Another quess here, she had insurance and I don't think any insurance is covering the sleeve yet, so that's probably why RNY. -
I'm a pear person. And most of the pear is in the back. So when I sit around the conference table I usually lean on the table because to sit with my back touching the back of the chairs is uncomfortable because I have to lean back beyond the butt. I feel like I'm reclined backwards, but with no back support. Anyway, today I unthinking leaned back. Whoa! I was upright like everyone else! I've also lost a bunch of inches. Had to poke a new hole in my belt today, two inches tighter than the last poked hole. I'm keeping this belt forever. I want it to wrap around twice! I bought a pair of jeans last weekend, purposely bought them tight (but no tighter than the biggest pair I had before surgery). They are two sizes smaller than my pre-surgery jeans. And they are slightly looser today than they were when I bought them on Saturday. They were such a good deal...under $10 at Penney's Outlet. Wish I'd bought two or three more pairs in the next smaller sizes, to "ungrow" into. I love that they come up to my waist and don't have huge legs.

Well at least you found out early on, about a week? And that it will be approved. You'll be a banster soon!

Candle, Well that explains a lot. LOL

Questions from others while eating out!
Ellisa replied to aefizzy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh, another thing we do is ask if we can have lunch portions or senior portions, they are usually still too much, but we don't get questions because they assume we weren't "that" hungry in the first place. No one has ever turned us down for asking for smaller portions or asked why. We aren't quite old enough for what the menu says for seniors. Mind you, asking for a senior portion is less food, not the same as asking for a "senior discount" in which case they might ask for proof.
