Do you notice how much others eat?
athena3127 replied to *Lexie*'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery on 11-4 and was in my purée stage during our thanksgiving lunch at work. While everyone had plates full of food I had a tiny spoon of mashed potatoes and only ate 1/2. I was scared to eat much. I did notice that everyone took an hour to eat and although I stretched my few bites out I was finished and simply being social early. Later I noticed something when I was with my sister... She had a toddler who at times will eat with no problems and there are other times it seems a constant battle for her to get him to eat a meal. Now that I'm post op my nephew who is 3 1/2 eats more than me currently. In speaking with my mom I told her that now I realize how "food" isn't as important and that I wanted to talk to my sister. That on the days my nephew isn't wanting to eat that maybe it's a key he really isn't hungry. When we have a big day playing and adventures in the park he sits quietly and eats like such a little man that he amazes me. Maybe the "clean" your plate rule should be set aside and we should focus on simply listening more to our body and remaining health. I think setting meal time is important and provides structure in which my sis aces! She's great and so on schedule. So if at meal time he doesn't feel hungry then maybe he really isn't. I know now that often my prior eating was out of emotions, stress, social gathering, and just about every other reason with simple nutrition being far from thought. thank you for listening to my rant and I hope you forgive me for the thread hijack! Lol it just seemed to fit in your post ** you may now return to your regular program** -
sipping water makes me nauseaous.
athena3127 replied to thesweetone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so glad I came across your post! I'm 6 almost 7 wks post op and I am with you on having issues with plain water. I can do sf decaf tea , g2, juice, anything but plain water and I'm fine. If it's simple h2o I'll have such an issue with nausea and just about every yucky feeling that it stresses me out trying to get down even a shot glass. However I do try a sip or two daily because I miss drinking water. -
How long before I can go to the gym?
athena3127 replied to tfarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would also ask about a mall or indoor gym. I know prior to being discharged from my surgery 11-4 I managed to walk 1/2 mile the day after surgery in the halls and a full mile the day I went home. I kept track with a fitness tracker I am not allowed in the gym until after my 12-22 apt with the dr. If all looks ok he will give me the gym green light but not before. -
I am so jealous of those who can have meat (tuna/chicken) in the purée stage! My nut corrected me quickly when I asked "even if I blend it as fine as baby food" no was the answer. I loved roasting veggies and then blending them into baby food. The roasting seemed to bring out the natural flavor. However, I suggest doing only one of anything or bits of something and then having several small containers lol.

Having a hard time....
athena3127 replied to TieraLeone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing I would question.... Does your Dr / nut allow you to have meat even puréed ? I ask this only because I was so excited to get to the purée and have a great little blender that mushed things up silky smooth. However. My nut clearly said NO! No meat not even the baby food until after 9 wks. Although I had already tried but ended up with seems like the same results you did... Eating very little and not feeling my best. I couldn't eat more than 1/4 cup to start and learned that I could take a bite then wait a bit before taking another and really slow down my eating really seemed to help. I still have issues at times and my dr also advised me that there may be things I simy can't stomach now after surgery. That and my taste seems to be a bit altered as well. So I stick with veggies that I could cook myself an blend into my own baby food. My fav was roasted squash or broc. hang it there and keep working on it. One step at a time. I also use a baby spoon to eat or an appetizer fork and spoon which help to keep bites tiny little tricks that just seem to help -
Dehydration and getting over the mental block
athena3127 replied to MrsMurky721's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6wks out and I still have a daily struggle. I absolutely can not do just plain H2o even though I try daily. I've battled nausea and just plain water seems to be a trigger. I wAsnt even able to do water before I left the hospital. However, I am able to do juice, unsweetened decaf tea or coffee, crystal light, g2, milk or just about any other liquid. For me my protein drinks count as part of my daily liquid for the time being. I still have issues and have yet to master getting in the 64oz in a day. But I do try every day and do the best I can. My nut says some take longer than others. I assure you when your full you will know it! Sipping slowly keeping a sip to about 1/2 tablespoon helps. Start with 2 oz per hour that's and make sure u sip once every fifteen min then increase. Liquids pass quickly through the sleeve so my nut advised me and I am learning. So you should be able to build yourself up. However when u do have the full feeling. Stop sipping and do a little walking even if you are simply pacing the room. It helps to move any gas or trapped air. I promise you this as many told me when I first had my surgery and I'm sure you will here again. It gets better. With each passing day I am learning my new tummy and how it acts. Hugs of support. -
Wow after reading this post I'm in shock and somewhat scared of my next apt on the 22nd. I know I hit a stall and haven't bounced back. Hopefully my dr will continue to be supportive.

Post op diet struggles
athena3127 replied to lily0327's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should stick with whatever stage your in per dr or nuts instructions. Just because you "can" doesn't mean you should. Allowing your tummy to properly heal is important. I find that although I'm in my 6th week I sometime revert back to purée because it is more comfortable for the tummy. Although it sounds like you had no issues. I would certainly hate to damage what you have just gone through getting reworked. Best of luck. -
Laughter is after a the best meds so this should be good for everyone. Including yourself later when you are having a down moment this should brighten your day. Most important. You did it and are now mending. Prayers for a breezy recovery.

Able to eat & worried! Advice pls!
athena3127 replied to culmer's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm about one wk ahead as I'm 6wks out. I would question if it is real hunger or acid? I started to have an overwhelming feeling of hunger and felt I could have eaten just about anything. I realized that I had forgotten to take my omeprazole. Once back on track problem solved and my tummy was back to it's sleeved self feeling full with the smaller portions and restricted intake. -
I attended my first support group meeting last week. I should have gone preop. However. I certainly am glad that I'm going now. Once per month we get together. Being my first time and now being post op I could ask questions much like here on the forum and get answers. The difference is the personal interaction and most everyone had a before picture to show and now before your very eyes the new post op version. Sharing the experience was wonderful. One beautiful woman had just weighed in that day at 198. She isn't even 1yr out. She was sleeved 1-7-2014 and was down almost 200lbs. our dr attends support group meetings and asked her to share with everyone where she was in 2009 and this tiny 5' 4ish lady was at over 650. She last weight preop and has done remarkable post op. She is a true inspiration! I would recommend to anyone going to the meetings. A great way to have a meet and greet with those in or already through where u are now.

Awesome! Doesn't it feel wonderful! Funny how I've changed my laundry habits from everything in cold water and many things line dried to prevent shrinking to now everything gets hot water and dryer time to shrink things as much as I can. I also have hit the goodwill and other consignment shops because I was told not to spend $ buying new things that might not fit me in a month. I'm not super rich so I'm working every clothing corner I can until I get to goal....then oh how I will love shopping ! I've already warned family that are smaller than me. "Watch out I'm coming for your closet"

I am so jealous! I would love love love a taco. However I've been having a difficult time transitioning between stages and find my monster sleeve rebels often on new things. Heck I'm 6wks and still having hard time getting in my liquids. I am however learning the tricks to help with my fluid intake. But oh how I miss texture like really crunchy lettuce ! Or celery or taco shell lol

Not losing any weight since day of surgery
athena3127 replied to Linda774's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't get frustrated. Remain calm. there are so many reasons that might play a factor why the scale isn't moving... The main thing is to stay on target and remain focused and positive. The little engine that could. Keep sip sip sipping your water and protein. I'm 6 wks out and battering a stall myself so rest assured this won't be your first and it won't be the last. All our bodies are different and we all handle things different. Just follow Drs orders Walk as much as you can. This will help because it is a physical activity and if your moving your getting things started. Hugs of support! -
As most of is know food is "social" it's emotional, it's a plethora of things . I wanted to give a suggestion to anyone who is recently post op or the newbies just starting your journey. As I am now 6wks post op and learning to eat all over again I wanted to share a tool that works for me and well I simply think they are Awesome! And simply amazing and should be marketed as bariatric sleeve training tools. My sister previously gave me the fork and spoons to help with my small bites. Today when I came home my Mom said I have something to help you on your journey! All said with a loving smile. And here is what she gave me. How awesome! Tiny plates tiny bowels forks and spoons. This not only help me keep my portions in check but can make this a bit fun! love this and just had to share

My dr & nut had the following 2weeks preop clear liquid and Protein drinks only. This does include sf Jello. G2 ECt Surgery was on Tuesday 11-4 and was restricted then and released in Thursday 11-6 and I started my final week of clear liquid when discharged from the hospital this was considered my wk 1 post op. Wk 2 post op I moved to full liquid, cream of mushroom Soup or cream based soups as longs as you strain out the pcs. I could also have milk and juices like v8, or ECt in addition to the previous clear liquids and Protein Drinks. Wk 3-4 post op. - baby food. Greek yogert And I must say the Berber multigrain Cereal is actually pretty good lol. I often made it with a Protein Drink. Plus I could have baby food this was my purée stage Wk 5- creamy Peanut Butter, cheese, crackers, cream of wheat, oatmeal, dried Beans, eggs, soft cooked veggies and flour tortillas- I'm here in this stage and love it! So happy for a scrambled egg even if I can't eat the entire thing at once. This is the most challenging stage for me because I'm starting I. Real foods and have had such issues with nausea that I'm scared of many things here and find myself reverting back to the security of baby food which doesn't upset the tummy so much. My next venture isn't until wk 9 where I can add lean ground beef, fish or chicken. Then I move to 3 months and beyond where I'm open for anything.

Oh that's funny! I help with a food pantry on Fridays and during surgery wasn't able to assist. When I returned one of the ladies asked how I was doing and being the open person I am I told her wonderful and explained my surgery. She was relieved and said oh good . I was worried because I didn't see you for a couple of weeks and when I did I could tell you lost so much weight I hoped you weren't sick. funny hope the gossip goes

How long was your hospital stay?
athena3127 replied to Sexy Granni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Worked Monday. Surgery Tuesday. Discharged on Thursday and back to work. Monday. My mom had surgery on a Tuesday and released on Friday. She stayed an extra day because she has copd and was diabetic so they wanted an extra day of observation. However all is well. -
For me I have been very open even prior to surgery. My surgery was 11-4 and I've lost about 25lbs thus far. Because I've been very open about the process people felt they could ask me questions and I have enjoyed sharing my process along they way. For the most part everyone has been supportive and I've been fortunate not to have much negative feedback. I see this as a blessing because I have heard others haven't had the same reactions from others. I have and do see this as a positive in my life. I made a choice to do something and I'm sticking through with it. My reward will be in the end. A health human being both physically and mentally. I tell everyone and I'm not ashamed of my choice.
