I've been denied :(
athena3127 replied to champagne301's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If in the very first meeting with my surgeon you stated that you smoked they advised you to quit. He would then ask at each visit when was the last time u smoked. He required 6wks without smoking before he would ever start the approval process. Yes there is a nicotine test and he gives one before he starts the approvAl. The you get another test in your last Appointment prior to surgery and the day you go in for surgery they send you to the lab for the final test. I do understand that this can be stressful. However in the long run it's what works best to give you the best possible outcome from surgery. Reduces risks and complications. Hang in there and follow through with things you can do this. Hugs of support -
wow that sounds exactly like my mothers experience. Same for her and she had her surgery in May. She also has copd and was on oxygen preop. Post op her condition has improved so much oxygen is only required at night and she might be able to stop using it 100% in the future. Wishing you all the best!

What "musts"should I purchases pre op?
athena3127 replied to Countrygrrl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ibuprofen is on my never use again list as well. Check with your dr. All are different. I had no complications with surgery and other than a bit of nausea was up and walking the evening of surgery. Toothbrush, and general things as well as my tablet! I wore jeans home and found very little swelling or soreness bothered me. I was a lucky one and I'm Greatful for my experience. I didn't have issues with gas either. So outside of the nausea I had no problems and do consider myself blessed that gas didn't haunt me. Wishing you all the best! -
When did you return to the gym?
athena3127 replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cleared at my 6wk check up. Best to check with your dr and get the green light before starting. -
Is a colonoscopy a requirement for the sleeve surgery?
athena3127 replied to wannaBthinsoon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wasn't a requirement for me. However all Drs have different sets of requirements. My mother had the surgery with the same surgeon and she had it as part of her requirements. I think there are various factors which dictate what the requirements are for each person... Age.. Insurance.. Pre medical history...ECt. Wishing you all the best -
Caffeine allowed during pre-op diet?
athena3127 replied to hdd55146's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Check with your nut or dr. Mine didn't allow any preop and even post op coffee or tea are to be decaf. -
Need advice - band or sleeve?
athena3127 replied to happyinarizona's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Take your time and research what is best for you. See if there is a local support group where you could go ask questions. My dr no longer does the band due to the high failure rates that are associated with issues post op. I personally have a family member who had the band and after loosing weight had complications (her band slipped) and she had to have hers undone or have the solution which priovides the restriction removed so unfortunately she has gained the lost weight back and will now have to go through the process again to have the band removed and get the sleeve. I am only about 8 wks out and I'm happy with my sleeve. I'm still learning and finding things out. However I must say this far best choice I could have ever made. Happy researching to you! -
Being open and honest with your dr about previous eating habits and such are key. My dr also has been known turn people away if he finds a fatty liver. With the sleeve surgery they actually go under the liver to snip away the part of your tummy. With that being said it is the main reason my dr requires the 2wk clear liquid prior to surgery to "shrink" the liver as much as possible prior to surgery. This in turn reduces the risk of any complications. It's a precaution he takes to reduce the risk of nicking or causing harm to the liver. That's how it was explained to me.

Stall at one week post op
athena3127 replied to Sassafrassa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No matter what day your on it is always best to follow what the dr says. However as I have moved into the various phases if I experienced a "bad" day and things weren't setting well I would revert back to the previous stage for a day or two. When I moved into my current phase of soft cooked veggies that didn't need to be mushed up I had a few days that I ended up sick. I would revert back to the mushiness babyfood to break things up before moving forward. Giving my tummy a bit of a break seemed to help. Your tummy will help guide you I can assure you of this much -
P.s. I use the coffee as a tool to help getting in my liquids. I add unflavored protein mix or use a protein drink to make it a moca. The warm liquid goes down easier and doesn't give me issues so it helps when I've spiked it. Bit with protein

Vitamin suggestions please! Thank you!
athena3127 replied to Elizabeth21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
! ! Yep yep they are great. I also take in Iron suppliments as well as b complex and Calcium citrate along with vit d. Im at the stage I no longer have to crush pills so this all works for me and I have always take. The Flinstones Vitamins even as a child 2 for an adult contain the same as any other multiple Vitamin. P.s. The nut advises against any of the gummie ones as they often don't do well for sleevers. I didn't try because I didn't want to find out they didn't work for me the hard way. Lol -
... As all Drs have their own post op instructions it's hard to offer suggestions as it may or may not be ok with the instructions received. For example week one post op for me was clear liquid only or Protein drink. Them week 2 I moved to full liquid meaning cream based Soups strained for any pieces. I could also add in milk or juices yet remained on liquids. Where as others were on full liquid post op or even puréed foods within a few days post op. If your on Clear Liquids try making your own veggie broth. If your on full liquids then juices or soups are additional options. Thus the importance of what your dr allows. hugs of support

What can I eat in the puree phase?
athena3127 replied to Sexy Granni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes with the exception of the meat. You can actually eat the baby food in jars. Baby food has less seasoning and won't have all the things used to flavor. I got some of the all natural or organic ones so that I could have it in my purse when out on the go or at work. When at home I made my own with roasting veggies and blending until it was the same texture as the jar foods or applesauce. -
I was sleeved 11-4 and as everyone advised it gets better in time. However slower is better. As you progress into the different stages things change and the "restrictive feeling" shows up different or it did for me. My dr also advised that you want to try and stop before you feel the restriction as you will find later on as new foods are introduced the tummy handles things different. I had situations where the restriction "red flag" came while I was chew chew chewing my next bite. If you get this do not swollen the bite! This is the time for learning. So go slow and learn what is best for you

Stall at one week post op
athena3127 replied to Sassafrassa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Vent away! and put the scale away! Haha stick to the guide your dr provided and don't check the scale for 10days. Or even wait an entire month. Then when you do start to drop it will show up big time and you will be dancing! I was a daily scale person until post op my numbers went up up up and I freaked out. Everyone said it was normal and I remained on target. I also stopped weighing and them went to the dr and had a wonderful loss. Dr advised not to stress because the stress itself causes hormones that slow the weight loss so it's like a double negative. Try to reduce stress and loose on my friend. -
only 6 weeks out and the sleev has saved my life....
athena3127 replied to mhugueley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Amazing! Best wishes for the new year ahead. -
Day after surgery once I had my leak check I could have decaf if desired as it fell into the "clear liquid group". However it may take a bit to drink the cup you can sip sip sip away all day long

Where's the restart button?! Please help! :)
athena3127 replied to thall04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Suggested restart by walking yourself back through the post op eating. Start with clear liquids then progress forward. It is after all how you started out after WLS and could be used as a "reboot" getting you back to focus on nutrition and priority of protein first. -

How muchfood did you eat in the pureed stage
athena3127 replied to GenaW828's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Exactly what they said about 1/4 cup or so... Really depends on the density of the purée. And it also depends on what your having....wishing you all the best loosing ahead. -
100% awesome sauce! In addition make your own. Specially if your preop. You can cook and the. Freeze clear broth from veggies and such. Sipping along the clear broth path for you
