My doctor always said that there was an overnight hospital stay for banding and for bypass there was a 4 -5 day hospital stay (it was so much longer due to the intestinal rerouting). I chose to do banding because many bypass patients gain their weight back as their bodies become more efficient at absorbing calories. I had lost 135 lbs on my own before only to gain it all back and more. The lapband is a tool that will keep working with me to help control my hunger. If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page you will see links to other threads where this question has been posed. good luck to you !!!

I am finishing up my masters in education and I'm around little kids all the time. I have to constantly remind them to cover their mouths, use a tissue and to wash their hands. A few days ago a little boy sneezed right into my face as I was trying to help him. Needless to say I have been sick off and on for the last 2 months. I have had the same problem with having so much post nasal drip that eating is hard. I have been sticking to liquids and mushies trying to ride it out. I think I am getting a good amount of nutrients, but it is hard. Sorry that you had to have a complete unfill !

I had TIVO'd Oprah and just got to watch it today. I agree with the other posters who pointed out that the response for the girl who lost the weight on her own was overall more positive. I must say from the time that I was 12 to 17 I was on a constant diet and dropped 135 lbs. Clearly I couldn't keep it off and gained even more, which led me to choose banding. I do wish that girl well, but over 95% of people who lose large amounts of weight regain it, just like Oprah herself. I'm done yo- yoing and if it took a surgery to accomplish this so be it.

I'm thinking about getting LapBand. Is it really worth it?
ivyrose325 replied to frost1's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was just reading through this thread and thought Wow many of you guys were cleared to eat all the mushies that you needed to be comfortable during your post –op phase! By week 3 my swelling had gone done and my stomach was rumbling all the time I honestly had dreams about food (something that never happened before) my surgeon and nutritionist told me to keep it to my 3 ,¼ cup mushy meals a day, a protein shake and all the water I could drink That was so hard !! For the OP I’m so glad that I was banded, though I have been lucky, with every fill I have had I have good restriction for about 4 weeks at least. -
What would you do if you weren't "big"?

Go on a job interview and know that interviewer is listening to my credentials, not wondering if I will drop dead of a coronary in front of 30 kids. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Have a healthier pregnancy next time around, hopefully being able to deliver vaginally this time. Be able to sit in DH’s lap Go scuba diving Be able to wear corduroy without hearing swishing noises Not embarrass DS at school Be able to play with DS and not ache Teach DS good eating habits ( I was banded just after his 1st birthday and was only getting healthy pureed baby food at the time so he will only ever know good foods) That's all I can think of now, but there's more -

You look great ! Although I am not near goal yet, when I was a teen and took off 135 lbs on my own I had a very hard time wrapping my head around my new body size. Seeing myself on video really helped. Conversely when I started to pack on the pounds again I didn’t see myself as I truly was. Now I am trying focus on how I feel and how my clothes fit since I don't trust what I see anymore. -
Congrats !!! Isn't it a great feeling? If you can find a good tailor maybe you could get to use some of the ones that are a bit big even.

I haven't had a NSV in some time, but today I had 2 !!! 1) I used a public restroom and my hips didn't hit the stall walls !! 2) I fit into a size 16 top in H&M I started out as a 30 !!! Now only if my lower half would catch up ( in pants I'm a size 22)

I do chew gum on ocassion. However, I don't chew it after meals anymore since right after eating I'm full and then to swallow too much saliva causes me to slime.

I wish I didn’t have to get up and go out today, but I do . I have no desire to go to class and I used to love school I just wish I could crawl into bed. :faint:

Why does everything take so much energy to do?
ivyrose325 replied to ivyrose325's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
on and off for the last 3 months sense dh lost his job today is a very tough day I am dragging my butt out the door because my degree is important to me and this class is only 3 weeks long -
Does your DH or SO know how much you weigh?
ivyrose325 replied to cQQlgirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, my dh knows my weight. I got over not wanting to tell him 18 months ago when an OB in Labor and delivery blurted it out in front of him. At 9 months preggo I was 375 lbs. By the time of my lapband surgery 1 year later I was down to 342 From there the numbers have only gotten smaller. -
I really could go for a spot of Chinese food, and was just wondering what type of food have you been able to tolerate well? I don't eat red meat or poultry, but love seafood and tofu. any ideas ?
-
What type of Chinese food can you eat?
ivyrose325 replied to ivyrose325's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i think that I am going to try some tofu and be very careful with the rice and raw veggies !:hungry: I haven't had any take out since being banded but have gotten stuck enough before to be cautious ! -
I weighed myself this morning hoping that the fill that I just had Friday would have helped me off of my plateau. Not only did it help, but I am down 75 lbs in just 5 months !!! Hooray !!!!! I feel so much healthier and better about myself then I did half a year ago!
-
Congrats to you too Candle !!!! I think part of the reason why the weight has come off faster then my dr had predicted is because I had close to 200 lbs to lose and I burned more calories just to do day to day things. From reading other posts I think it might slow down as I become lighter. Also I've cut out almost all carbs, I used to live on breads, Pasta, and rice . Linds- my DS weighs 25 lbs, my arms and back ache after holding him for about a half hour I couldn't imagine carrying 3 of him around with me all day everyday !!! Thindolphin- I've been walking a lot which is harder now since it is so cold out. I try to walk 3 x a week for 30-45 mins. I have an arthritic knee( from being obese) so I am not doing anything too intense. I am thinking about renting a dance workout video soon to see how I feel with that. Tigger Shorty- I was given my surgery date 5 days ahead of time and wasn't required to do a pre-op diet. Although for my post up liquid phase I really liked tomato Soup Happy New Year to everyone !

Thank you !!! I feel like I can reach my goal which seemed so impossible only a few months ago

Got my Band on Monday, but I don't know what I should be taking now.
ivyrose325 replied to Justin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Protein shakes are important !! I drank Slim Fast Low Carb since it had over 20 grams of protein and under 8 grams of carbs. Protein helps you heal so finding a protein shake for the liquid stage is important. I also ate vegetable broth, jello, fat free pudding, low fat sugar free frozen yogurt ( my nutritionist had this on our list) tomato soup, skim milk and decaf tea Congrats on your banding !! -
When I was a teen I lost 135 lbs "the old fashioned" way. Obviously I couldn't keep it off same as 98% of the population. I decided that I didn't want to ruin my health by continuously yo-yoing so I was banded. I did this for me and anyone who doesn't like it can go suck an egg Imagine if they did a story claiming that women who used fertility drugs to conceive cheated and took the easy way out ( I do NOT believe this but am using it to make a comparison only) ... there would be a huge outcry, and they'd have to publicly apologize . Once again it is ok to pick on fat people.

I don’t have a fear of being thin, but I don’t like to have a lot attention focused on me, based on my appearance. I know that when I am obese, people treat me as though I am invisiable and even avoid making eye contact. This made me miserable. I remember walking into one of my graduate classes and no one would speak to me (I’m sure it was because I was a size (30/32). Now people are starting to notice me again it’s like I slipped out from under an invisibility cloak, I feel comfortable here. People will converse with me, but I am not being judged solely on how I look either positive or negative. I remember after dropping 135 lbs on my own when I was 16 and going to meet some friends. I was dressed nicely ( I wasn’t showing any skin), and I was hit on by 4 different men in from the time I got of the buss to the time I walked to Herald’s Square in 5 mins time. I felt horrible!! Most of the men were easily more then twice my age, and it freaked me out. Almost 10 years later I like to think that I have developed better skills to handle my feelings, but we’ll see.

I just received a call from my dr's office that they need to cancel my adjustment appointment for tomorrow morning. Bummer, but OK things come up my Dr. is a general surgeon working out of the hospital too, so she might be in surgery. So then I ask to be rescheduled ~duh!~ The girl acted so surprised and told me that they have appointments for New Years Eve and would that work for me? Simply I have friends coming in from out of town that I don't get to see very often, and I am one of the few people who feels discomfort after a fill (mild cramping) so that's a no go. Then I ask for anytime in January with any of their 4 doctors and she tells me that it is an "impossibility" !!! She might have something Thursday February 1st. It took every once of patience that I have to let he know that this was unacceptable. with the exception of 12/31 I was free every morning and would like to come in any day. Then she got snippy with me saying "well I am going to keep your appointment for tomorrow, but it might just be a wait." I've had a wait in this office before 3 hours!!!! Only to then be sent into an exam room, put on a gown and told the doctor is not coming. go home. Not to mention how this plays havoc with making child care arrangements! I can't believe how uncooperative they are being. What dr does everyone else in the NYC area use?
