To Goal or Not to Goal--that is the Question
gswags replied to Teachamy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You may get a number of replies to your post and ultimately all are most likely somewhat right and somewhat wrong. When two experts have different opinions in this situation, their opinion is based on experience. You need to view each opinion as right and ultimately listen to what your body is telling you, within the parameters of the experts you are utilizing. Personally I think you need to get to the place you feel most comfortable with yourself. It's not necessarily a number. Currently you don't know what 140 will feel like. The only potential problem with what I'm saying is if you are at a point of being obsessed with a number then you should more fully rely on an expert. If not have a goal in mind but be willing to adjust it if you find you reach a comfort zone. -
I replied earlier to this thread about my diabetes improving since my May 20th surgery a little over a month ago. My blood sugar levels continue to improve. I've had a reading as low as 99 and my 14 day average is down to 122 and 30 day average is 125 which is a decline from the 126/133 in my previous post. This was after being insulin dependent along with Victoza and Metformin. I'm currently taking no medicines since my surgery.

Any May 20th surgeries out there?
gswags replied to teemarie1078's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Maybe it's that weight??? I started pre-op at 306, was 293 on day of surgery (May 20th) and about 12 days out was at 282. I stalled for 10 days to two weeks. In the last week I've taken off about 7 pounds. It was frustrating, but reading how everyone stalls, made a difference. I'm glad to be on the other side of the stall. Oddly enough, but probably coincidental I ate something I shouldn't have last week out of frustration and it seemed to kick start me. Of course that made me feel guilty so I burned it off The following day by bicycling 6.5 to 7 miles. My advice is listen to the experienced ones, they've all gone through it and eventually move forward. Plus all will say they were still losing in other areas. Finally you don't see anyone writing I stalled at three/four weeks and stopped losing never to lose another pound! . That also speaks loudly at least to me. Good luck, I can't wait to hear about the end of your stall. -
I've been a diabetic about sixteen years. About a year ago I began taking insulin before meals, plus victoza and metformin. The latter two I've taken for a long period of time. On May 20th I had gastric sleeve surgery. In the last three and a half weeks I've not taken any medicine and my average blood sugar per my meter is 126 the last 14 days and 133 the last 30 days. My results keep improving as time passes so far.

How much time off work, desk job
gswags replied to Sherra O.'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My wife and I had surgery May 20th, she went back to work full time as a nurse (mainly desk job in a specialist's office on May 27th without any problem. -
One thing I've learned along the way is do something you like to do. I don't like to walk or do workouts. Even things like playing ping pong, riding a bike, swimming, running around with kids or grandchildren are ideas. Just doing something to get you moving. My advice is try different things until you find something you enjoy. If you do, you're much more likely to continue doing it.

My wife and I were sleeved May 20th. My wife has a lot of bruising but I have little. I don't think it is anything to worry about. My wife is an RN and she wasn't concerned about hers. In addition I am (hopefully was) diabetic and taking insulin. Occasionally a shot would end up giving me a large bruise on my stomach if I hit a tiny blood vessel. These would normally be the size of a baseball but were as big as a softball. This was only from a tiny shot. What we went through was a lot more traumatic. I think it is fairly normal and of little concern.

Any May 20th surgeries out there?

Same here teemarie1078. I was taking a liquid whey protein that was low in oz (3.5) but high in protein the last two days. After taking it the last two days I developed the pass through issue. My son who takes protein supplements routinely because of working out said he had read that if you take to much at once, your body can't take it so it'll pass right through. Because I could quickly down a substantial amount of protein in a short period of time, his explanation makes sense though I did not verify. I am switching to a less concentrated protein drink tomorrow to see if that is the issue. I've also drank a less concentrated protein drink and that has not effected me so far this evening. -
Unsupportive Family Member Rant.
gswags replied to HalloweenBaby24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry about what your going through. In some way parts of my family were not supportive but in a quiet way. I educated them and tried to convince them this was the best way but sometimes people have their minds made up. However forge ahead and continue to explain how this will make you healthier to be there for your children. Specifically regarding your mother, I would explain to her that like narcotics anonymous and over-eaters anonymous, the gastric sleeve is a tool that you are using to help get control of your health. Get her to agree that you only disagree on the method. Then explain to her how most obese individuals end up losing and gaining for a lifetime. Choosing your method (the sleeve) gives you the best chance of success with little risk. This procedure is extremely safe even compared with with common surgeries such as knee replacement, gallbladder removal etc. After you prove the case, if she is still the same, then you've done everything you can and can only ask that she respect your decision that on paper this is the best chance for your future health. Just do your research about the successful outcomes for both methods, it's not only good for proving her wrong but also gives you even more confidence as the surgery approaches. -

Any May 20th surgeries out there?

I'm happy to report that both my wife and I are recovering quite well after our May 20th surgeries in Tijuana, Mexico. Being from Ohio we had a lot of traveling and have been back home since late Saturday night. We are both moving around quite well. Yesterday we walked around a couple of stores to get a few things we hadn't purchased prior to surgery in anticipation of moving to week 2 and full liquids (our first week is clear liquids). We have a six year old little girl that we missed dearly and were thrilled to see. A lot of worry beforehand but no regrets. Other than my wife having a lot of nausea the first three days and a migraine the 2-4th day everything went well. We have both lost weight but numbers are unimportant right now. My wife plans to go back to work tomorrow and I am self-employed with this time of year being slow so I can relax a little more, yeah right, that six year old is active! -
Any May 20th surgeries out there?

My wife and I had surgery late afternoon on the west coast. I am doing well but have gas pain in shoulder and chest. I've been up walking frequently, taking gas x strips with little results. It's painful but not horrible. My wife has had a few issues with nausea and a little bit of vomiting . However she's been able.to rest more than I have. She needs to walk more but has been more productive in expelling the air. -

Off to bed, surgery tomorrow for my wife and I in Mexico. Good luck all tomorrow including my wife. My prayers are with each and everyone of us. Everyone have safe travels. We will have a whirlwind of a day starting in Ohio and ending 27 hours later by being sleeved in Tijuana, Mexico. -
Any May 20th surgeries out there?

My wife and I are eagerly and nervously anticipating our May 20th surgeries. Our day will start in Ohio and end with surgery late in the afternoon in Tijuana, Mexico. It will be a long day but well worth it! -
I have worked in taxes as an accountant since 1987. Have been sole owner of tax practice since 1992. The costs including travel expenses are deductible. It must be over 10% of income (changed in 2013 from 7.5%) unless you're over 65 then it is still 7.5%. My wife and I are having surgery in Mexico 5/20/14. I found out about surgeon and Beliteweight from a tax client who inquired about deducting costs. This started my journey on surgery. If you use a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, that would not be deductible because this is normally a pre-tax deduction through your employer.

My wife and I are both having surgery May 20th in Mexico. Pre-op diet is going well though we just need to keep our carbs and fat intake low. We are drinking low carb shakes, eggs, eggbeaters, and low fat turkey along with a few other things. We're traveling three time zones to have surgery. I'm nervous but not my wife. She's an RN -
