  1. I had my second fil last week and I am eating fine again. My problem is at night I wake up with revolting bile in my mouth and as soon as I lay down i start to gurgle. i have read that this has happened to people that are too tight but I dont have a problem eating a good amount its just the awful reflux. Does anyone have any advice? Is it Normal? Anything i can take?

Any antacid should help, but you should talk to your surgeon, if your restriction isn't too tight, sometimes a tad more fill helps to stop the reflux.

  2. well today I was to have my first fill and well ... I too walked out dissapointed and disgusted!!!!

we had some dificulty finding the port, didn't bother me, we agreed on me getting my first fill in consultation with an x-ray, but what concerned me was the full syringe of gunk that he extracted from a haematoma between my port and abdomen wall.

Rest for 10 days, x-ray, fill, then catch up with him in a few weeks.

hungry too ... going to intoroduce something a bit more than mush, but I could do without eating any more potato if anyone has any ideas!

If you like fish, tuna mornay is great for the mushie stage. I made a chicken currie and then pureed my portion (several actually cause I froze some for lunch at work), for something sweet I pureed fruit and had it with diet yoghurt or diet custard, or with diet jellies. Remember that you can have diet jelly on mushie stage to help fill those vacant spots. Blitz some Pasta and Tomato, or some lasagna for something different - looks gross but tastes great and if its too thick just add a touch of Tomato Soup to thin it out.

  3. hey all!!

Thanks very much for all your kind words :w00t:

The doctor too thought at firs tthat i was eating too much/ wrong foods/ too quickly...but i assured him that i am eating 1 cup of food three times a day as directed by my dietitian, and he said that was small meals so that wasnt it. I took it upon myself (which probably wasnt a good thing to do anyway..) to not move on to the next stage, which is solids because i honestly didnt think i was ready for them...i mean my mushies are quite firm, but im not eating whole chicken or anything like that yet...My diet primarly consists of Yogurt and maybe some grapes in the morning...Lunch is generally fish and mashed sweet potato, and then dinner is generally fish again, or chicken mince, with mashed potato or Pasta...At the moment im struggling to eat things like Tomato, carrot, egg, rice (which was expected) umm chicken...but mostly carrot for some bizarre reason...

I think i was just in a bad mood after that appt. I realise now that he has done it for a reason, and thanks again for all your support!!!

What you are eating seems ok, just be careful with grapes as the skins don't chew up well and they can cause a blockage. I also find carrot, corn and peas difficult to eat unless they are really, really well cooked. I use my crockpot alot as it makes the meat so tender and easy for a bandit to chew - this is also how I eat carrots. Most of the bandits I know don't have problems with eggs, but they do have to be either soft boiled, poached or scrambled - I lived on them when I was on mushies.

Perhaps you aren't chewing enough - this is usually my problem - i get distracted and forget to chew, chew, chew and then I find I get something stuck. so perhaps you could try eating slower and chewing longer and see if this helps.

  4. Hi I did an intro in the main section and then saw that there is a section for ozzies as well! Great!

I am not banded yet but have my first appointment with a surgeon soon. I am a public patient so not really sure what to expect.

I hope I meet the criteria to go on the waiting list can anyone advise me what to say and what not to say? LOL :w00t:

Other than that can anyone please share with me what you go through from 1st appointment to 1st fill? What physical things are involved and which other specialists do you see ect?

I would really appreciate hearing this from ozzies as the procedure will be similar nationwide I assume?

    Cinni.

    Hi Cinni,

    Congratulations on your first appointment.

It's hard to tell you exactly what will happen as each surgeon has different requirements and it also depends on your weight and any co-morbidities. Public and private also have different requirements.

I was a private patient, I went to my surgeon's information night and then made an appointment. First I saw the nurse, she is my main contact, she gave me more specific information than what was at the information night, explained what would happen etc. My next appointment was with the dietician, she discussed what I ate, how, why etc, explained what the changes would be once I was banded. My 3rd appointment was with the surgeon. Both the nurse and the dietician had given him their opinion as to whether I qualified, and if they thought that I would follow through on the necessary changes. He then discussed what would happen, whether he thought I would be a good risk and arranged for some blood tests. He also told me that I would have to do a period on Optifast once I had my surgery date to make sure my liver was not too fatty.

Once he got the blood tests back and gave me the all clear it was about 6 weeks to my surgery. The surgery was quite easy for me, didn't have a lot of pain or any other bad thing happen but did have 2 weeks off work. I was on fluids for 2 weeks and then mushies for another 2 working up to normal meals. About 6 weeks after the surgery I had my first fill.

Some surgeons require you to see a psyhologist or depending on other factors may send you to other specialists or for other tests - all depends on the individual and the doctor involved.

Hope this helps a little, my blog address is below and you are welcome to read the journal I have there, it might give you a bit more info and you will realise that any nerves or fears you may have - your aren't alone.

Good luck, this was the best decision I have made.

  5. It's been about 12 months since I joined this website and I haven't back since because my surgery has been a total failure. There seems to be a leak somewhere and I've had refills so many times I've lost count. I'm now heavier than when I started and am very depressed. What options do I have?

You need to tell your doctor of your concern about a leak. He can check easily as all he has to do is withdraw the Fluid from your band and see how much there is - if less comes out than what should be there then it needs to be investigated.

The other thing removing the fill from your band may do is that when he replaces it, the tubing may fill differently - when a band isn't filled to capacity it creases and folds around the stomach, when Fluid is taken out and then put back in the tube may crease and fold in different positions - this might actually result in tighter restriction.

You said that the max your band takes is 10ml, so I am guessing you have a 10ml band - I know of someone who actually has 12ml in a 10ml band, so it is possible to go higher.

I really do think you should contact your doctor about having no restriction, although some people do need more fill than others.

Let us know how you get on.

    Danna

  6. Ok, the first fill does not always give you restriction. I was lucky and got a good restriction on my second fill, but now need more fill cause I can eat anything. You have to remember that finding your perfect restriction is not a scientific process - it's trial and error and everyone's sweet spot is different. I only have 3.5 ml in but I was banded on 3 December. I have a friend that was banded at the end of February, already has 4 mls and needs more. Patience - as the add says - it doesn't happen overnight but it will happen - your weight didn't get to this level overnight so you won't lose it overnight.

1/2 to 1 kg a week is the best level - for your health and for skin elasticity - lose too fast and your skin won't be able to adjust.

keep plugging away - we're all here to support you and always remember that there is someone who has probably gone through the same as you are now and will be willing to offer advice and support.

keep smiling and chew, chew, chewing

  7. Congratulations on your surgery. I was banded by Dr Liebman & Dr Smith as well. Great guys! I went for my 8th fill yesterday and I think I'm getting close to good restriction. I was told they will only go .5cc for each fill so that they don't over fill me where I end up with problems. Good luck with your journey.

    Hey Danna how are things?

    Hi Sades,

Real slow at the moment - went back for more fill about 3 weeks ago but was really sick that day so they wouldn't give me any and now can't get in again until 14 May so - no restriction and am living on will power - HELP!!!!:)

  8. I also had a BMI of over 60 but my surgeon had no issues. If you are really keen and what to prove to the Dr that you are serious about the weight loss, try doing the Optifast diet - you can lose quite a few kg's and it helps to reduce the fat around your liver. Chances are you may have to do this anyway as many Dr's require it before the surgery - mine did.

  9. I had my follow up appointment today - all well except for a minor infection in one of my smaller incisions - nothing serious - got some antibiotics.

Can move onto mushies a few days early (YAY).

I've spent the afternoon making some tuna Mornay - and also my favourite crockpot recipe is simmering away - Moroccan Beef ! I'm sure it will taste just as good after its been blended. I'll post the recipe in the mushies sticky under food/nutrition if anyone is interested.

Moving onto mushies soon - that is great you'll start to feel like a real person again soon.

Yes please post the recipe - I bought a crockpot when I got banded so would love some recipes for it especially with the cold weather arriving here.

  10. Hi everyone, I've been reading this board for a while leading up to my banding. Had it done yesterday afternoon, and was able to go home around 10am this morning.

It seems like my surgery went very well, and I'm feeling quite good all things considered - the normal amount of pain I expect, some very colourful bruising, and the dreaded wind pains.

I do have a question/concern about my liquid intake. I was advised I should sip my liquids - about 50mls every 10 minutes - so about 1/2 cup per half hour so as to not cause discomfort, and not stretch the pouch. I'm having to really slow down and sip, sip, sip. I feel like I could be drinking normal speeds - the liquid seems to be going down without any trouble at all, and I'm even managing my pills without any trouble. Maybe I'm lucky, but I was expecting it to be harder to swallow.

Will I damage myself if I'm managing to sip through a cup of liquid over 20 minutes?

    Thanks

    Luscious.

    Hi Luscious,

You probably won't do any harm but you need to drink slowly so that you don't swallow too much air - this will increase the gas problem and could cause you problems, especially pain if you already have problems with gas. I am attaching a suggested program for the Fluid stage and hope this helps - remember slowly does it to start with. This is for the full Fluid stage, if you are still on clear fluids you will need to swap them with the sustagen etc.

  11. can you please tell me how much fills are after the first 12 months. how many fills does one need and in what sort of time frame do they get done by the doctrors? for example am i going to be needing fills every year or is it done at the beginning a couple of time and then not touched again?

this forum is great but its also full of contradicting information. reading the different topics some people say that medicare pays for the fills and some say otherwise. its pretty confusing at the moment.

Also what level of health insurance is best to have with this treatment? is there anything that i should know about thats its not usually known or common knowledge when choosing a health fund for this proceedure. Any things to watch out for? Which health insurance/cover do you have and were you happy with it at the time of surgery?

Seeing as though you can change health funds without incurring additional waiting periods i want to make sure i get a pretty suitable cover for this surgery.

sorry for the million questions but like i said its pretty confusing.

I go to the same surgeon as Sades but things are a bit different with me - everyone's experience will be different as it is a very individual thing.

so far I have had only 2 fills - it has been about 8-9 weeks since my last fill as the last time I went it was decided that I didn't need additional fill at that time - I do now and am going for my 3rd fill on Wednesday. Some people have only had 1 fill and reached their sweet spot, others have several before they come close - very individual thing.

Like Sades, my fills are bulk billed for the first 12 months.

I am with Medibank Pvt top hospital cover - between them and Medicare - all my Hospital was paid for as was my radiology and about 70% of the anethestist bill, I only got a small amount back on the surgeon's bill and the band itself so the out of pockets were about $4,000 - 4,500. Remember you can also claim a tax offset on medical expenses over $1500.

As Sades suggested, you should raise these at the information night.

  12. I was banded 13th of Feb and I had the same experience with my Port seeming to want to POP out felt spooky but now 6 weeks later it has gone in and seems to have turned . I went for my first fill today and Doc has had to send me to Radiology next week for the fill as it was too hard to locate.

So I would'nt worry if I was you as things change and it's easier to go with the flow eh? Doc was pleased with my weight loss of 14 kilo's so far But I must say I was really expecting the kilo's to fall off and now it has slowed to a trickle even though I'm following the rules. Why is this and is it normal at this stage ?

    Keep smiling, Jan:lol:

Yes this is normal. Most surgeons only want you to lose between .5 and 1kg per week. Remember that the faster you lose the weight the more chance there is that your skin will stay stretched. Also remember that you did not put all the weight on overnight so you won't lose it overnight, but every kg gone is good and if you follow the rules will never come back again - that's got to be good!!!

    Danna

  13. Like Sades, I was banded by Steve Liebman and think he is great. Most of the surgeons have information nights, you don't need referrals to attend these - you just ring up and book a seat. Perhaps you should go to some of these - you will get to meet the surgeons and they will tell you what you will need. You are also able to ask questions.

    Danna

  14. Only got banded yesterday - less than 24 hours ago and I woke up hungry and still am. WHAT THE? I feel I could go for a drive to Maccas to get something to eat. Maybe I'm still dehydrated from yesterday.

I've also got a bit of reflux happening. Maybe that's what's making me want to eat.

Assuming you are on clear fluids at this stage, remember you can have jelly, clear broth etc to help fill you. You should be having at least 2 litres of fluids per day and siping them slowly. When are you allowed on full fluids - they will fill you better as you can usually have anything that goes up a macca's straw - and you should include plenty of Protein in these as that will help stop the hunger.

Congratulations on joining the 'other side'

    Danna :sneaky:

  15. Yep, your right but in my best tantrum script "I DONT WANT IT I DONT WANT IT" guess I have been lucky all these years. My blood pressure also bottomed out to 85/55 today went to the nurse at school she suggested I see the Dr. Went to the Dr and he didnt seem overly worried he said if Im not feeling faint then low blood pressure is good, ok.

Well, I come on line to see what is happening and here you are having a tanty - I suppose you are lying on the floor screaming and kicking your feet???

You better be careful, they might put you on Opti for an extra week

    Danna

  16. Can someone tell me would I be risking ketosis if I added a little bit of fish to my vegies at night?

My Dr (who made me do Optimuck for 4 weeks) told me that if I really, really had to cheat then to have either an extra cup of the vege's OR a small piece of grilled fish or skin free lean chicken. As the others said, Ketosis happens with a very low carb diet, so as long as you don't have any carbs, fat or sugars you should be ok. If you can last on the Opti do, but in an emergency grilled fish, or salad will do (you are allowed a spoon of olive oil so you could add some herbs and make a salad dressing.)

    Danna

  17. Get the fill. Most times slimming and PBing is our own fault - either we eat too fast or don't chew enough. I've had a couple of episodes of both - my fault - while they aren't pleasant, and if they happen too often you should be concerned - but otherwise they're nothing to be scared of. Once you have got some restriction you will start to appreciate what the band can do for you.

    Danna

  18. Hi all

So, I've been waiting anxiously on APRA to assess my claim to release super for the op. After 5 phone calls over the last 2 weeks I finally got my answer today - no, we need more info.

Hey, calm down. Send them the letters, big organisations can be real sh*ts to deal with (I know I work for one).

Problem is that it's no big deal to them and while this is wrong, unfortunately its the way they work. Play their game- in the end they will probably give it to you and then you can forget all about them. :blushing:

I know it's a stress you don't really need but sometimes you just got to let them have their moments of power (probably have nothing else in their lives).

Hope everything goes smoother for you this time.
