Anyone having surgery in May
MommaD88 replied to Cupcake's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nicolej, did they not send you to a nutrition class or prep class? I have found great resources on then internet about examples of diets for each phase or other methods of food prep others have tried. -

I so know what you mean. I saw the other comments about dumping and feeling almost like a low/high blood sugar attack. Those scare me. My husband had an RNY in 2001 and he become hypoglycemic after his surgery. Anything like sugar, orange juice, syrup, honey, etc makes his blood sugar drop. Weird huh? First time he had an attack I rushed him to the ER. All the hospital did is made him eat a cheeseburger and fries. I told him he better love that $1000.00 lunch plate. I know it was serious but would have made sense to tell me to him something to eat since I called them first. -

Glad yo here things are well Nolagirl09. I will be having mine next Thursday. I don't know shout you Cupcake but I'm anxious to get this show on the road. The waiting and getting closer is driving me nuts with anticipation. Still worried about the feeling afterwards even I go to eat/drink. That's my only worry right now. -

Thank you, I appreciate it! I hope to get off all my meds once the weight comes off. The anesthesialogist says I need.to take all my meds or the surgery is off. Time to be a good girl and keep taking those meds. -

Hello how are you? Where are you located? Where are you having surgery at? Hello there, I am doing good. Thank you for asking. I am actually in Northwest IL near Rockford. I am having surgery at the University of Chicago. I felt that it was the most capable center to handle things with me. I'd rather drive than have someone make a mistake with me and my health issues. -

Well I had my pre-op appointment and all is good to go on the 22nd. Yay! Maintained the exact same weight for the last month. The PA came in to talk with me and should looked at the wrong file and then my weight and thought I gained a load of weight then realized what she did after asked me what I did to myself. I was like huh? I'm pretty sure I'm the exact weight as last time, she looked again and was embarrassed and was like yeah you're good...lol whew had me sweatin' for a moment! Anyways, I start my diet on the 11th, some food with my liquids so that's good. On the 21st I will have clear liquids only and nothing after midnight. Surgery is not until 1:30 but I'm to be there a few hours earlier in case they can get me in a head of time. Got to visit the hospital part that day and there is a beautiful view of the Willis Tower (for all us Illinois people The Sears Tower..lol) I can't get use to that yet. The biggest obstacle I now have is my vitamins. Went to Vitamin Shoppe and found a liquid "fruit punch" flavor multi vitamin. Might as well call it "poo punch" because it smells, tastes, and looks horrible! I don't think I can bare to try again. It gave me a horrible after taste for hours. Burping it up was the worst. Ew! -

halfbella, the only thing I can think of is to keep yourself busy during those times. Can you not drink any other liquids water, fruit2O, crystal light, etc? To keep the brain occupied is the way I am going. If you do that maybe those hours in between your meal times won't seem as bad. Just a thought, -

Well had my pre-op appt yesterday. Maintained my weight over the last month. My diet will start on May 11th and I can have 2 Protein shakes, 1 fruit, 1 sugar free treat, 2 frozen Meal Replacement meals like weight watchers, lean cuisine etc a day. On the 21st I can any clear liquid and as much as I want till midnight but nothing with red coloring. I will have to be at hospital a couple of hours before my surgery at 1:30 but always the chance they could call me to be there earlier. I'm more nervous more about how I will feel after the surgery. My husband had the surgery in 2001 and he said the first thing he felt was full all the time. He said to take it slow and I'll be fine. The doctors said after two weeks after surgery I will come back and then they will advance my diet. Keeping positive as I know this will be the best thing for me. Healthy Life, Happy Life! -

Purple Iris, This for me is the complete opposite. I am the one feeding a big family and constantly trying to please all tastes especially with my picky kids. I have always struggled with them eating fruit and veggies and when I talk with them about eating better. Well I'm like a pecking hen in their ears. I'm slowly trying to get them to eat different things. My husband is not so picky and prefers my cooking than going out. Because I will be on liquids when I come home I am thinking of ways to make hearty soups that will work for me to puree but yet they can eat whole. I make things like vegetable beef, white chicken chili w/northern beans, etc. That way I can take a bit out to puree it and add more broth and poof my supper is complete There will be times they will want different like pasta, I will have to work around it like taking my veggie puree and adding broth to maybe make a simple soup for me while they eat pasta. I guess I'm trying to say you can still have your dinners together just have to get through that icky liquid diet before hand. Sorry I'm rambling. -

I'm curious what the bed pads are for. My guess is for accidents as I've heard about uncontrolled explosions if you know what I mean. Just a guess. -

I am also so bad with GERD that is causing me bad health issues. I have to have a bypass. I've had two sets of surgeons tell me this from two different Universities. Nissan fundoplication due to my weight will fail so this is the best option. Medicine is no longer working and I have asthma so bad that despite treatment sometimes is uncontrolled despite treatment. My asthma meds also weaken the sphincter between my esophagus and stomach. They also tell me it will eliminate the GERD. -
Good luck!

So I started last Monday to prepare myself for this surgery. I also know that I will have a modified diet with food 10 days before surgery. I didn't want to struggle so bad so I started things a little early. I have already started eliminating things from my diet. Started I guess a modified diet to work up to my modified dirt so to speak...lol. I've been soda free for a week now. Not struggling too bad but I will miss my Diet Mt. Dew..sigh. Still having the stomach pain so I'm not sure if it's from my GERD, my protein shakes or my body getting use to a different eating lifestyle. Started using my fitness pal app. Thing is, I think I'm eating a lot of protein but still seems as though it has a lot of carbs. Not sure how to cut this out. Calories I'm trying to stay within 1000 day. Of course I'm going over every day. Not getting frustrated as this is still probably better than what I was eating. Well have a.happy day all! -

I have not started my pre-op diet yet but I started drinking protein shakes to get use to them. I have been drinking them with Almond Milk but the last couple of days I've had horrible stomach pain. Today I went back to using regular milk. Does everyone have this? Do I just need to keep at and let my body get use to it? Any suggestions would be appreciated! -

I can understand that. I am nervous about the unknown of how I will feel afterwards. I've had my gall bladder out and two c-sections. He said I will feel a little more beat up than those. Although I sailed through healing with my 2nd c-section. So maybe I will do OK with this as well. I can see how challenging with not picking up the two year old. My oldest when he was little couldn't go anywhere unless he was carried....my drama king..ha ha ha ha just kidding. Thank goodness he's almost 11 now. My youngest is 6 so this is a good age and time for me to have this done. I just need to concentrate on getting me better. I always have an issue with putting others before myself. Now it's mandatory to get me better. If you would like we could be buddies and check in with each other to see how things are going. -
