So, BJean, do you think this couple should be punished? As you say, they're suffering enough at the loss of their child (assuming that they loved her as much the rest of us love our children, and that they did what they did because they believed it to be for her benefit). But, as stated before, the "punishment" isn't so much that, but more a deterrant for others who make the similar choice. But, what should that be? And, what if people of lesser character decide that it was "Gods will" that the child be __________ insert neglectful action/non-action here. What then? I think it is up to the society to determine the safety of children. No, not to impose any religious beliefs on to anyone, but to safeguard the child. The adults can choose any religion they want, but a minor who needs medical treatment should have laws to protect them. In the example about WLS for a minor: I would think if it's a medical intervention then it should be necessary. I personally get steamed when I read about boob-jobs for 16 years olds (when it's not a trully medical reason). However weight loss has been proven to reduce risks for so many diseases, that having the surgery makes sense. Not seeking treatment for diabetes doesn't. Also, given that you're asking for tolerance for fellow human beings, and asking where the line is drawn for the government's long arm of the law, let me ask you the opposite: Where is the line drawn for tolerance? At what point do you step in and say, "Okay...THAT'S ridiculous." When someone dies, I'd say that's a good time to step in. And, laws, like the insurance law brought up earlier, is put in place to protect people and usually after something tragic happens - like this. Am I intolerant because I think these people neglected their kid? Sure. Am I intolerant of other's religious beliefs? Nope. But, as far as judging each other, that's how our society is built. That's why we serve on the jury - because we do judge each other.

I'm in Spring now, but am moving to Huffmeister and 290 in a couple of months. I worked in Jersey Village for about a year, though. I'd love to meet up! There is the Starbucks on 290 and (oh, lost it - is it Jones?) Across from the Exxon. Rachel, I met you at the last one in March...when is the next get together? I enjoyed the last one. -
I win....Stupidest Question of All Time!

Or full! I've never understood what full felt like until the band. I read there are clues to feeling full like your nose will start to run, or you'll get the hiccups - well that's always happened to me! Now it doesn't. I thought I had some food allergies. I was just really full and didn't know it. -

The closer I get to needing a fill, the hungrier I get. But, when I'm restricted, I don't get hungry until I'm eating. With good restriction, I'm more likely to say, "Oh, it's 2:00pm and I haven't eaten today...Huh," than "I'm starving!!!" But, I have to be careful. If I'm not feeling hungry, and don't eat, when I do sit down to eat and realize I'm hungry, I'll scarf it down. Not fun! So, I guess my suggestion is to pay attention. If you're feeling hungry ask: Have you eaten enough Protein? Have you eaten things that would "slide" through the band and prevent you from feeling full?) I just have to stop and question myself when I'm "hungry". Also, the types of food I'm "hungry" for help me figure out if it's head or stomach hunger. My tummy doesn't want the ice cream. My brain does. and My brain doesn't want the chicken from a can (unless it has the yummy spinach dip mixed in it). My tummy does. -
I love pizza, too...and we (as a family) have it a lot. The Tostinos (?) from the grocery store are perfect. They have the thin crust and I can have just a little bit and the others can share the rest. When we do order and it has a thick crust, I give the crust to the bf. Even though I'm worried about what his weight will get to, it's been nice having a garbage disposal where ever we go!

Forgive me - I know nothing about insurance. I am the idiot in the corner selecting my plan by the "Eeeny-Meeny-Miney-Moe" method. I am not proud, but it is what it is.... I am banded, have been since September, and my friend wants to get the band. She has UHC, and was told her plan doesn't cover it. I have UHC through a different employer and they did cover it. My question is this: Is there any way she can get supplemental insurance that would cover the band? Was anyone here told their insurance did not cover the procedure, but then was able to get around that somehow? Also, if it is employer exclusion (I'm certain it is, since mine covered it, but don't know for a fact) how do go about reversing that? Was anyone sucessful in doing that? If so, how? Thanks!

How does insurance and employer exclusion work?

 Thanks! Your guesses probably have more education and truth behind them than what's in my little finger!!! She does work for a small(ish) company, and knows the firm administrator pretty well....hopefully she can take that route and persuade them to add it. Question about that: Can a company add that for, say, one year, and then change it again later after the procedure has been done? -
LOL - My daughter looked at me with a look that said, "Huh?" I said, "He's talking about America, the COUNTRY."
-
Excellent point, Lauren!

I don't. I try, but end up on my ass. I feel depleted by the end of the day. Today I went and played tennis with my daughter and it felt GREAT! I love it after I'm done, but before and after I HATE it.
-
I know! I'm so sick of the cry-baby brothers! And, his wife said, "Mark squealed like a girl" after the make-over section. LOL...bad when your wife disses you. I really want Ali now, or Kelly. NOT Roger!

ARRRGGGGHHHH.....You need a license for a dog, why not a child? I know, that's Brave New World-ish, but whenever I see people abusing kids, it kills me. -
I understand the point you're trying to make. The bottom line, for me, was that this child had no choice. The parents' rights to choose a religion aren't in question. It's the neglect of the child that is. I think it's also important to note that this child was taken to the doctor to get her immunizations that were mandatory for school. That's a flag that in THIS case the parents were willing to "damn their souls" in order to comply with the law. Why didn't they when the child was not getting better? I do not think they meant to kill their child, but I believe that what they did was neglect and should be punishable.
-
WHAT?! Food, water and shelter are the bare minimum requirements for the SPCA when investigating animal cruelty. How do you KNOW what damns a child to hell? I have a hard time believing God would want a child to go through that pain and suffering. Damning souls is not as tangible (or good) as saving a life. How do these parents bet their child's life on whether or not God approves or disapproves of medicine? Remember the joke about the believer and the flood? He prays for help from God, and a truck comes...guy says no-God will save me. Flood waters rise and he's on his roof...a boat comes. No, God will save me. On his tippy toes....a helicopter comes. No, God will save me. He drowns, gets to Heaven and asked God what happened. God says, "I sent a truck, a boat and a helicopter!"
-
That is exactly how I feel. If an adult wants to refuse treatment - fine. No problem. But, a child doesn't have the knowledge behind the choice, and the parents should make the decisions on what's best for the health of the child - not their own religious choice. I personally feel they should be convicted and laws put into place to prevent this kind of thing. Children don't have choices and some parents are just stupid people who breed.

I have a vanity in my bathroom that is a mirrored, 3-door cabinet. I used to be able to stand in front of it, and my boobs would be in the first mirror, and my butt in the last one. I could never really see myself whole. Now, my reflection fits in the middle mirror, with nothing sticking out the other side.
