It’s a tricky question because carbohydrates are in so many things: fruits, veggies, dairy, Beans, grains, oatmeal, etc. Rather than worrying about a daily total, I would try to keep the carbohydrates from grain products (cereals, crackers, chips, potatoes, etc) between 30-60 grams daily. As far as fruit 2-3 servings/day is recommended (30-45 grams carb) Dairy- 2-3 servings/day (24-36 grams carb) This gives you a grand total of 90-140 carbs per day. 60 grams total is not enough to allow good carbs, so I would definitely say to aim for more than that. Also remember that “fiber” is technically a “carbohydrate” but actually produces no calories so they can always be subtracted.

Granted, I make communication mistakes, but have found if one writes in third person the message comes across better. Third person keeps the conversation on track and eliminates personal attacks. This particular site has an interesting audience. The makeup is 90% female and I am not sure about the education level. Most of us guys look at weight loss differently than 50% of the women. (My estimate). I do not have a grasp of all the emotional issues many hang on their weight loss. Instead I follow the simple rules given to me by my doc and the weight comes off. Some of the posts just seem idiotic from my perspective. I have learned to stay away from those topics. One example that comes to mind was the lady wanting advice to get her 13 year old bariatric surgery. She specifically asked not to be judged. Hell, if I were a judge she would have had her daughter taken from her. However, many here thought she was mother of the year. Bottom line, I am making an effort to just stick to the physical side of this surgery and diet. The rest is a waste of time.

Spam with bacon
par1959 replied to skinnybitchgoals's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found one gets tired of over salty food very fast during the pureed stage of the diet. I looked for low sodium soups and pureed them. Bean soup was one of my favorites. I use to enjoy span as a child, but can no long handle it. To much fat and salt. -
Need advice for transitioning from weight loss to maintenance
par1959 replied to Rogofulm's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Go talk with your NUT. I am still working towards my goal, but have asked my NUT 1) what should my goal be 2) how to change your diet once hitting your goal. Her answer was kind of our body will find its balance. She still stessed eating to right things ( light on the carbo side) and nuts are a good way to increase caroies instead of carbos. -
What to expect right after surgery?
par1959 replied to JerseyJules's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I frankly didnt need any medication after surgery. According to my nurse, that is the norm.Your stomach will not hurt. There are no nerves in the portion they remove. If they do more than your stomache it could hurt. You should be on anti nausia and pain meds coming out of surgery. Sure your 5 little incisions where the instruments went in will be sore a little for about 3 weeks. This surgery is very easy. I rate it less pain than getting a tooth pulled. Want pain get your shoulder rebuilt or get masive butt surgery. That hurts. -
14 months out and realllly struggling
par1959 replied to kyleebean's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I kind of took a break over the holidays, but to my suprise I still dropped 7.5 lbs. Before I discovering I was off track I made the decision to do the pre-op semi liquid diet for a week starting this last monday. I am currently on day three. Suprisingly, it has got me back on track. I am drinkin 3 protien shakes a day and eating a modest dinner. 4 oz of the protein of my choice with all the salad I want with a little dressing. About 900 cals aday. Weighing in this morning I have already dropped 3 lbs and dont feel hungry:). The other thing I recommend is tracking your food. If you dont do this honestly your only lieing to yourself. -
Both surgeries are effective. Take a look at the stats. I chose the sleeve bcause its an easier surgery and almost as effective. That being said in my support group there are people that have had both. All are happy with the results, but the sleevers ave less complication eating.

Question regarding smoking (quitting cigarettes)
par1959 replied to ohclementine's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I quit smoking 18 years before surgery, but relly dont see much of an issue. I had several surgery prior to the sleeve. -
I weigh daily. Yes, the numbers dont make sense, but weighing daily keeps me on track. You will get the best results to weigh at the same time and wearing the same cloth each day. I prefer first thing in the morning wearing nothing and after releiving the bladder. For me weight seems to come off at night. My nut who has also had the surgery weighs daily. She expalins it this way. Granted she has been at her goal weight for 10 years. She sets a parameter/ range of 5 lbs.Example 140 is goal and 145 is the top end.If she starts to close in on 145 she will know not to have that extra snack or hit the gym for a little longer. An last remember you wont loose lbs everyday, so dont beat yourself up or become overly worried if the scale doesnt move. It will if you follow the rule. If you follow most of the rule most of the time you will lose most of the weight. True words!!!!!!!

I love popcorn, but its a slider for me. After adding up the actual calories uncludng the butter and oil I find the portion I was eating could go up to 500 cals. This being the case I only eat it on occation.

Weight gain 10 D post op
par1959 replied to Marielbx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You had surgery in October? If that is the case you should be eating regular food and not relying on protein shakes. Maybe you not getting enough calories in. If you follow most of the rule most of the time you'll lose most of the weight. Be patient. -
Finally 6 weeks out! Now what to eat?
par1959 replied to gmacy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everybody is differnt. My favorite go to food is chili. I eat the beans one at a time. I now enjoy apples, but couldnt at first. At 6 weeks I still had digestive problems and dont know if it was specific foods or just my body adjusting. -
How much food can you eat with sleeve?
par1959 replied to emp409's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As usual, I agree with CGJ. I am 7 months out and can eat more than at even 5 months out. However, even though the holiday season is tough with all the food around, I still lost 7.5 lbs in the last month. In between meal snacks are the toughest thing to deal with. All of us must stay aware of this and make the changes nessesary to deal with it. I find honestly logging everything I digest the best tool. It tells me that I must concentrate on not snacking and too make good food choices. -
Why different post op diet requirements?
par1959 replied to Annie77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Much has to do with their training. I contributed much of the confusion on the different surgeries. For many years the Band was the most performed. The diet requirment are different between a band and a sleeve. The support group I belong to has more banders or should I more longer time banders than sleevers. I received lots of conflicting advise from this group. Banders have many more complications and a lower success rate. For instance banders throw up lots depending on what they eat and have dumping syndrome and other bad side effects. Most of us sleevers do not. -

How did you determine your goal?
par1959 replied to gettinghealthymom1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Guess everyone is different. My doc said to start with a BMI in the green then see where my body wants to go. -
Great pass on the bad stuff. Those kind of tins find their way into my office area. Hate them. The trash can is a better place

My collarbone is beautiful...
par1959 replied to HumanMerelyBeing's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Its funny how we lose our bones over the years. -
You only live once. I made it clear to my wife that I was looking for a little on the side and overnight she was back in the game. Im so tired of hearing about women complaining they dont feel good about themselves so they dont want to play. Life is just to short and there are plenty of women that want somebody to pay attention to them.

Had 6 month check-up today...
par1959 replied to Essence46's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your doing great. I had pictures taken at 5 months. At first I didnt want them but damn I looked good. Just like you. Feels good doesnt it? -
I was very scared going into this. Seems everyone you talk to knows omeone that has died or had a horrible time with bariatric surgery. However, statistics show that your risk of dieing is about the same as having oral surgery. As I have learned in my travels, we only hear about the bad stuff. People that are sucessful dont hang out on this site for long. Per the head nurse where I had surgery ," 99% of the patients have no complications". Of coause I did my research when selecting a Doc. The entire team has never had a death and have been offering bariatric surgery for over 15 years. As for sleeve surgery the team of three surgions have had a total of one leak in 5 years. They perfom over 500 a year. Thats damn good odds. They have on the other side fixed many a botched mexican bariatric jobs. Many on the site took the Mexico path with great results. All comes down to doing your research and make price secondary.

Men are easily impressed? LOL!!! A good catch has to have much more on the ball than just showing up to impress me:) Education, emotional stablity and employeed are a few things that come to mind. Thats what I tell my daughter.

I am 6 months out and can handle scotch on the rocks. The hang overs are much worse after surgery. I do not get tipsy any faster than before and can drink a lot. But keep in mind the hangover price to be paid. I recommend not drinking until you have lost all the weight you want. I kind of slipped. Once by accident I tasted a bit of bubbly. Not a good idea. Just a micro sip and my sleeve told me to stop.

I wouldnt be to worried. Most of us go throught the last meal syndrome. Looking back its not the best thing to do and in not the long run you wont care about what you use to eat.Instead you will look at other shoveling huge plates of food down their throat and wonder how the hell you use to do that. It takes a few months to get to that point. You will have some second thoughts at first, wanting that huge plate of food.

You can have about any style egg. I first tried hard boiled by squishing them with a fork. Over time I could no long stand the taste of them. Although I do enjoy an omlet when going out for breakfast. The dog gets most of it, but cheese is good:)
