    All natural vitamins?

I love this topic. First Vitamin manufactures are not regulated, there for when the bottle says “all natural” it means nothing. All Natural can be anything man made because man if part of nature so all natural can describe anything man made. Second, we have been eating GMO foods for most of our life. The anti GMO thing is a relatively new politically motivated set of ideas not based on science. Remember the cancerous French rat tests that started the controversy. Turns out they were bogus and the study has been withdrawn. As I like to say 1 trillion served and not one tummy ache. Another misnomer, produce labeled organic are not GMO’s. Not true read the FDA’s protocol for organic produce. It’s actually very vague on the percentage of GMO allowed to still be considered organic. If you don’t believe me look up the FDA guide lines. Last year on the west coast there were many attempts to force the farmer to label GMO products sold at the grocery. In all western states the law did not pass muster with the voters. Part reason is because the laws were written in such a way that stores such as whole foods, vitamin manufacturers and restaurants were exempt from the labeling protocol. In essence, this was a move by whole foods and the others mention to increase their market share.

    Fit Bit One

I got one about 3 weeks ago. Really helps me get my 10k step a day in and track my diet. Suprisingly accurate.
  3. At my one week post op I was told to stay on the acid reducers for about a month giving the stomache time to heal with less acid.
  4. I was done on the 28th and feel the same. My doc said dont worry about calories just keep on the fluids. Keep in mind the food you described is considered a slider. Once we graduate to real food the restriction should kick in ans slider foods are no longer allowed.

    Interactive Menu Planner

I am sure the software exists. Personally, I dont want to play spin the wheel for meal planning. I have my favorites dishes which I am adapting to my new dietary needs. For me it adds fun to meal prep.

    Sushi

Those in my support group tell me I will be able to eat anything after a while. However, we all know that rice, bread and that kind of stuff is a bad choice, leaving the entire decision up to the individual. I look at it this way, until I get to my goal weight and switch to a maintanance diet I will avoid carbos and play by the rules. At that point my eating habits should be well controlled and a bit of rice wont be an issue.
  9. Today is 10 days post op. I had no problem drinking after surgery, but was very hungry, infact I could gulp after a couple of days. Just keep on sipping. My doc also aloud fruit juice as long as it did not have added sugar and at costco my wife found otter pops that were straight fruit juice. They are tasty. At my one week post op visit my doc made it very clear to not worry about calories ,but concentrate on staying hydrated. Onday 4 I started eating pureed Soup and yogurt through out the day , but my caloric intake is still well below a 1000 a day plus I make sure to get my 10,000 steps in each day. I have yet to realy feel a restriction. This is because fluids go right through me. Apparently, once on solid food the restriction will kick in. Total weight loss in 3 weeks ( pre op liquid diet) I am down 32 lbs and dropping. I am also starting to feel the benifits, BP is normal and blood sugar is great. My energy level is fairly good, but I do need a good nap evey couple of days. The sleep I am getting is the best for a long time.

    Pain after 4 weeks

Interesting, my extra parts were removed on the right side. At week 2 post op that incision does cause discomfort when I bend lift ect... Yesterday I started having a bit of pain in the area you referred to. MId left. The feeling was simular to the side aches one might get exercising.
  11. During surgery they breath for you. Its after the surgery where lies the concern. There is concern that you could stop breathing after anestisia or the narcotic use for pain. Personally a CPAP is like a security blanket for me. Cant sleep or nap without it. However, getting use to a CPAP was difficult for me and others. It took at least a month. So, in my opinion if you have several months before surgery get the CPAP and learn to use it. If your surgery is sooner than that dont worry about it. I had the surgery on 5-28 and maybe got 2 hours sleep. I cant sleep on narcotics. In my case, the pain from surgery was minimal. I could have done it without pain killers. According to the nurses I had that is generally the case, but not for all.

    Shakes How long?

You will have to search this site, but someone posted a study that found our body can only digest x amount of protien a day. I cant remember the amount but it was below the general guide lines we have all been told. Another point was made that in one sitting our body could not digest more than 15 grams of protein. Meaning the shakes with huge protien( I have heard one claims 40) are no more effective than those with just 15 grams. I am current using bariatric advantage which is 20 grams. In my opion, I would say you could stop shakes. You can always make one if you fall behind.
  13. I was able to gulp at day 3. I learned this by accident. Doc says dont worry about it. I watch the after surgery floroscope. The contrasting dye went right through me with a slight delay entering the stomach due to swelling and another slight delay exiting the stomach. Total time less than 2 seconds. According to my doc there are basically two types of patients. There are the ones that liquids go right through which are the majority and then there are those that have problems with liquids the minority. I am still on the anything that can go though a straw post op diet. This also includes yogurt. I usually take my time eating but it only takes me 10 to 15 minutes to down a bowl of soup. I could do it much quicker , but eating slow is one of the new eating behaviors we are suppose to be learning. I have also not felt much of a restriction. I hear that will change once I am on solids. Per my doc I am to consintrate on getting my liquids in and not eat solid food. Protein is not a focus yet. Healing and hydration is what is important in weeks 1 thru 3, possibly 4. Down 28 lbs as of today. Surgery was on 5-28
  14. I would be interested in starting something like this , but your charter is way to restrictive. I can see what in it for you but whats in it for me. These type of organization take a lot of time to orcastrate. You get final say in everything, what? I think its great to support each other, but to use as a strict marketing tool takes away from the goal of helping people. Currently I belong to a local support group that does all the things you mention but its open to the public and its free. They get great speakers and cover good topics monthly. As a group we help each other.

    starting to eat meat..help!

One trick to keep fowl moist it to brine it using salt Water. There are many recipes on line. I have heard it works on pork but have not tried it. As for turkey I will never cook a non brined one again. The difference is night and day. Keep in mind you do not want to over brine or it will have the reverse effect through osmosis. Also do not over cook meat.

    Protein popsicle recipes?

I was told sugar free or fruit juice with no suagr added popcicles are fine in these early stages. Main goal is to stay hydrated. Otter Pops make all juce popcicles that are great. Can be found at Costco.
  17. I was told today there are two types of people. Those that liquid goes through quickly which are the majority and those that liquids go through slowly after surgery. I am one of the lucky ones. The flouro scope showed liquids go through my stomace in seconds. In this case I shoud not have any kind of acid reflux issues, but I am still to take omeprazole until I am healed to prevent issues. My guess that will be at week 5.
  18. Just got back from my 1 week post op appointment. In a nut shell you should still be on a liquid /any thing that will go through a straw.. You still have a tender staple line and dont want to risk a hard substance getting caught where you're healing. That being said, I was able to eat yogart with granolia yesterday and beef jerkey, but today my doc advised against it. He also made it clear that everyone is different and to take it slowly and let things heal. This being the case I am back on anything that will go through a straw including yogurt. It was also suggested to not blend fruit that has small seeds such as strawberries, but a banana or peach smoothy would be OK. I was also told not to worry so much about calories but make sure I get my liquid in.

    carbohydrates

Here is what I was told. In the process of burning fat your body turns fat back into carbos. Therfore when you are in the losing stage you dont require any carbos in your diet. Once in maintanance mode it would be a good question to ask a NUT.

What do you do instead of "Going out to dinner"?

Just had my first run in with this yesterday. I ended up having iced tea. Its not so fun watching others enjoy a pizza, but I had some fun trying to get them to over eat and feel guilty about it. Damn Im a stinker.
  21. Has anyone tried Chobani Greek Yogurt. It comes in a 5.3 OZ size. 13 grams of protein also 13 grams of sugar:( but I find it avery satisfying breakfast. Add a little fruit and some granola it my current fav. 120 cals per serving
  22. One other rule to remember is animal protein breaks down in your body much easier than vegetable protein. If yu need some extra protein tuna will get you there quick
  23. I talked with a guy today that is 2 years out, he can drink a six pack of beer and has lost half his old body weight and is keeping it off. I would not suggest doing so. At day 6 after surgery I did try some beef jerkey and granola in my greek yogurt and had no problems. I did not push it. Tomorrow I see the Doc and will go over what I can and cant eat. I really want to get to soft food ASAP.My biggest problem has been OD'ing on all the salt in creamed soup and broth. Pudding is OK in small amounts along with greek yogert. Protien shakes, well what can I say about them. Nobody likes them,, but I can tolerate them better than salt.

    Quick Question About The Pain

I had surgery last Wednesday. I did not need pain killers. Sure there was a few times I stretched the stiched holes in my belly that smarted. When ever I sneezed, coughed or got in and out of a chair or bed, it hurt a bit. Today being day six I can sneeze with little discomfort.
