Slower than molasses, but...
jjinWA replied to fezik23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I wonder if we could open a thread for those of us that are 55+. Or is there one out there already? I think the age is something that can impact our results. I think it would be fun to compare and learn from others who are in the same bracket. Thoughts? -
We have talked about getting together for some time. Guess best thing to do here is list the home towns so we can figure out a good midpoint for a meet and greet. I am in Gig Harbor. If you are interested in meeting post your home town and we can go from there.

Slower than molasses, but...
jjinWA replied to fezik23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 60. Still a lot of life ahead of me (I pray). I want to spend the rest of my years healthy and active. We deserve it, no matter what age we are! I have lost 35# and hit my 2 month anniversary. This weight loss included my preop diet too, so looks like that kind of weight loss is normal based on the posts I am reading here. -
Have had really slow weight loss since I have had the surgery. Hit my 2 month anniversary yesterday and I have only lost about 30 lbs. I decided it was time to chart my food intake...protein, carb, fat and total calories. Hated to do it but I needed to figure out why I have not been as successful as others I see in this site. After only one day of charting I was shocked at my final tally for the day. 800-900 calories, which I think is in the ok range, but only 56% protein and 36% carbs! Balance was fat%. So guess I will be watching the carbs much better from now on. I think that may be my issue with the dismal weight loss I have had to date. Funny how those carbs sneak up on you!

Agree totally with your comments. Your weight loss is great! Congrats! I can only hope I will get to 48 lbs! Seems impossible goal at the moment. :-)

I feel a bit better after talking to my NUT. She said 50% protein, 35-40% carb and 15-10% fat is a pretty good balance and to keep calories around 1000 per day. Carbs should be complex and not via white foods... Bread, pastas, etc. She said we need carbs and a diet too low in carbs could be the reason for my stall. If I get the required protein and water in each day, and stay close to 1000 calories, the rest should just fall into place. She said not to obsess about it... Which is what I am doing. So I am going to relax and just stay on course. The weight will come off when it comes off!

You sound just like me. This foot pain is such a hinderance in my life. I know it has exacerbated my already out of control weight gain. I want my life back. I have tried to continue walking and just put the pain behind me, but it is sooooo painful. So far my new dr appears to have hit the sweet spot with his cortisone shot. It has actually dulled the pain. That with my orthaheel tennys seem to be doing the trick. Keeping my fingers crossed. :-)

I am headed to my support group tonight which is headed up by my NUT. I am going to ask her two things. 1. How many carbs should we eat each day. 2. If I make a smoothie in the morning I am alarmed at the carbs that count up due to the fruit in the smoothie. Are these carbs acceptable if it is in combination with high Protein ( I add Protein powder which tallies up to 24 grams). I will let you know what she says. I know the protein requirements and the Water requirements, but this carb thing has be stumped.

I try to walk at least 10,000 steps each day at minimum. The cortisone shot helped and is still working somewhat. The pain is back but not as intense. I had the shot 3 months ago. If I walk 15,000+ steps in a day I back off the next day and ride my recumbent bike or elliptical instead. I agree.... Never ever ever walk barefoot!!! I have had to forgo the cute shoes as well. I order my tennis shoes from Foot Smart. The name of the shoe is Orthaheel.walker, model # 23Twalk. With all the money I have spent on orthotics, nothing has worked as well as these shoes.... For me anyway. I believe the secret is to ensure you have a deep and secure heel bed. If you look in the Foot Smart web site, they have an abundance of products for this ailment. I try to order new tennis shoes every 6 months because I know that with my weight I break down my shoes quickly and they lose the support that is needed to keep my heel from hurting. I have discussed this issue with my foot doctor. If I can stay on course he thinks cortisone shots every 6 months may be enough to keep me mobile. If It becomes too painful to walk I will have no choice but to do foot surgery. I hear that is not often successful, so am praying my weight loss will keep me from having continued problems. I do know that you can not have cortisone shots more frequently then every 6 months.

I have suffered from plantar fachiatis for years. Only one foot, but very painful. I have every orthotic known to man. I wear a heel splint at night. Stretch my foot every morning. Wear orthaheel shoes, and put my foot in ice very night before I go to bed. Finally had a cortisone shot. That helped a bit, but I too am wondering if my weight loss might help alleviate the problem. I would give anything to be rid of the pain. It hinders everything I do. I have lost about 35 #s and still no relief, but I have about 50 more pounds to goal. Maybe it will get better as the weight comes off.

I eat popcorn, both homemade at home and movie popcorn. Don't do it often and usually only about 1/2 of a cereal bowl size. I used to eat a ton of it at each sitting. Does not bother my sleeve. Actually helps with my constipation! If I eat it at night, the next day..... Well you get the idea.

I will download this app today. I really need to slow down. I take a few bites and I am soon in pain cuz I ate too fast and did not chew my food well enough. So of course that makes me want to take a drink. I have been able to control the drinking with my meals at this point. I just do not have water at the table. BUT the rest of it is definitely a work in progress. Thanks everyone for your comments. They were helpful!

June 2014 Sleevers Check In!
jjinWA replied to SnohoGal98296's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too will say that I am glad I did the surgery. The adjustment to my 'new' life is exactly that... An adjustment. Part of my issue is that I have not told anyone about my surgery so focus on entertainment via food is likely not going to change with my group of friends. I am working through he foodie passions and will continue on my path to a new and healthy life. I know I can do this! -

What Is (or Was) Holding You Back from Weight Loss Surgery?
jjinWA replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My daughter and I were going to do the Sleeve together. There was nothing holding us back! EXCEPT..... Money. My insurance approved my sleeve surgery. My daughter's ins did not approve hers. :-(. We actually booked her for surgery in Mexico for July 22, but in the end chickened out. Could not find a dr that would take her followup here in US after she had the surgery. So every pound I lose is bittersweet. I know this breaks my daughter's heart seeing my success yet knowing she will likely never be able to have the WLS. Very depressing for her. And for me! -
I will order it and give it a try. I did buy GNC unflavored and have been adding to my Crystal light flavored water. Working pretty well.

June 2014 Sleevers Check In!
jjinWA replied to SnohoGal98296's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I find my hardest times dealing with food is when I am out to dinner with my girlfriends and they are eating delicious food, drinking wine, scarfing up the scrumptious dinner rolls, etc. I order a meal but am lucky to get in 4 bites before I am so full I actually hurt. I always go for the protein, never eat the bread, and of course don't touch the wine. Boring! I have yet to head to the movies. I know the smell of popcorn will be pure torture for me! -
Why are some weight loss surgery patients so clueless?

Again, I will repeat one more time. Nothing wrong with differing opinions. Say it, then move on. No need to keep at it. OMG. Don't care about personal status, age, etc. everyone should be able to respond and not have to defend it over and over. I am not disagreeing with any opinion here. Just allow all to post and not feel attacked for saying what they feel. That should apply to everyone. I agree with RJ. No need for me to continue.... We are way off point and to continue just feed to those that love this type of dialog. I've seen this in soooooo many other threads. Sad. -

RJ, your choice to take that back seat is understood. There is nothing wrong with hearing out different opinions. It is just that some opinions come out a bit 'louder and it drowns out any other opinion. Thus the reason that the more calm response simply just disappears and the poster chooses to decline in the need to get in the last word. To continue to respond is futile. There are those that will never see or understood any opinion but their own. -

RJ, post your concerns, comments, advice, questions, etc anytime you want. I love reading the kinder gentler version that you present. Your posts are helpful, motivating, and always said with kindness. I am often surprised by some of the more caustic posts I have read on this site. Personalities are what they are and in most if not all cases I think these posts are not meant with malice, BUT placing thought in how the response to these posts might be taken is not always considered before they hit the 'send' button. Because these posts are via text and not face to face, sometimes the words can appear to be a bit sharp when in fact it may not have been meant that way. My company required all of their staff to take a class on how to present your case via email. Again this is because with out the face to face interaction, words alone can be perceived very differently then what it was intended. I wish you the best in your recovery through all the complications you have faced and I for one thank you for your honesty and willingness to share your journey with us. Because even if you might be talking about 'yourself' there are likely many out there who are reading, relating, and desire the information that you are posting. -
June 2014 Sleevers Check In!
jjinWA replied to SnohoGal98296's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery date was June 17 and in the same 3 week stall. Just now seeing a pound come off over the past 3 days. Maybe thus means it will start moving again. Sooooooo frustrating. I have cut out carbs almost entirely and working hard to get more protein in each day. Walking, walking, walking........ This has got to get better!!!! -
Very strange. Both my NUT and dr say these are fine for my diet. I only eat 1/2 bar but it does help when I need to get protein in before end of the day.
-
Just keep rice at a very minimum. It expands in the tummy.

My go to for a quick breakfast on the run is to stop by McDs and eat a breakfast burrito. I open it up and eat the egg/cheese/sausage filling. I can't eat it all, but get in about 1/2 to 2/3rd of it. I toss the soft shell.
