The "In case I get fat again" part of my closet...
James Marusek replied to AvaFern's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The closet of old clothes was just dragging me down. Got rid of them all. Good riddance! I have been in maintenance mode for around 2 years now and if anything I am still losing a little rather than gaining a little. -
Sleeve or bypasd
James Marusek replied to MrsForcier's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 29 months post-op from RNY gastric bypass surgery. I had severe acid reflux (Gerd) prior to surgery and that is why I went that route. I lost my weight very quickly in about 6 or 7 months. From what I read WLS (weight loss surgery) will make you more fertile. Generally they recommend that you do not get pregnant after surgery until at least 12-18 months following surgery. Low caloric intake cannot support a pregnancy. -
Hello, I'm new!
James Marusek replied to Learningtolive's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome and let us know if we can be of any help. Try to get about a half hour per day of walking. It will help the recovery process go smoother. Also if you are drinking caffeine, cut that out now. When I went cold turkey on my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered for a week with withdrawal syndrome. It is best to get that over with now so that it does not compound with the effects of recovering from the surgery. -
Lost 18 lbs. I'm 4 days post op.
James Marusek replied to RGraham87's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It can always be a little hard in the beginning. Your body is in a heal mode. The most important elements in the beginning is working towards meeting you daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. -
Congratulations and let us know if we can be of any help.

When I was young, I was thin. I could eat anything, anytime, anywhere and not gain weight. I use to go to a restaurant each day and order a large ice cream banana split. I remember all the elderly women in the restaurant staring at me with their jaws ajar, wondering how I was so thin. Well as the years wore on I did gain the weight and became obese. Sometimes I could feel the weight of their stares wanting revenge, wanting me to gain the weight. But it is all only just a feeling. The genetic makeup of my family (mother and brothers and sisters) is to be thin when young and obese when old.

Some people experience hair loss and others don't. Not getting in adequate Protein can cause this problem. Most people who experience hair loss will grow it back. Hair loss is more like hair thinning, not the kind that causes balding.

Gained in hospital 12lbs, lost the 12 in a few days now not losing at all
James Marusek replied to rebeccaburlinparrsih69's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In the beginning your body is in a major heal mode. Keep with the Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. Be a little patient and let the magic happen. -

Sleep Apnea?
James Marusek replied to yerawizardamy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 67 years old and I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 28 months ago. I had sleep apnea prior to surgery. I snored so much that it kept my wife awake all night long. This went on for several years. Shortly after surgery, the condition disappeared. Sometimes I would find my wife hovering over me in the middle of the night. I was sleeping so quietly that she was afraid I passed away. -
3 months post-op. Just ate two slices of pizza.
James Marusek replied to gbveteran4d's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At the three month mark, you should be able to get a substantial amount of Protein from your meals if you concentrate on high protein meals. As a result you can reduce the amount of protein supplements (Protein shakes and protein bars) that you need to consume to meet your protein requirements. This will drop your total calories and hopefully get you dropping weight again. -
Post Op Care Question
James Marusek replied to Dar200's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a good chance you will be fine by yourself. I didn't have a drain. I believe most individuals do not have to have them. You will need some way of getting home. Don't expect to drive for a few days. On the other hand, if someone volunteered to help, I wouldn't turn them down. At the least, it is a bonding experience. -
If weight loss was easily achieved through dieting and exercise, most of us would have been there, done that. But it is almost impossible following that regime. That is why we seek an alternative, especially one that has a proven track record. I don't know if significant weight loss will affect your medical conditions of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis, but I do know that surgery put almost all my medical conditions into remission very, very quickly; where they have remained ever since. I am 28 months post-op RNY and I would do this surgery over again in a heartbeat.

WATER... liquid in general
James Marusek replied to twinmomC's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wow. Getting a cold right after surgery was probably very painful every time you coughed. Many times after surgery, the microorganism in your lower intestines are destroyed by antibiotics which may have been given to you after surgery to inhibit infections. These microorganisms need to be restore. That is why some doctors recommend taking Probiotics after surgery to restore these organisms so they can do their functions and get your digestive system back to working properly. -
That stuck feeling!
James Marusek replied to rnwrny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have noticed that when I have that stuck feeling that the orientation of my body affects the recovery significantly. If I eat too much just before bedtime, it is horrible. By body does not digest food the same way when I am laying down verses sitting up. Most times I have to get up and watch TV for a couple hours to get over that stuck feeling. For me the lesson learned was to never eat dinner too late. -
Once and a while, hunger goes totally dormant but generally comes back in a few days or a week.

Post-op no holding back
James Marusek replied to rebeccaburlinparrsih69's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations. In the very beginning it is a little hard to meet the daily Fluid, Protein and Vitamin requirements. Your body is in a major heal mode at the moment. But keep striving towards meeting your requirements and you will get there. -
I haven't experience this but it seems that some individuals get low blood pressure after surgery. The general advice is to make sure you are getting enough fluids and salt. Also if you were on high blood pressure meds prior to surgery and are still taking some now, it may be time to begin to phase off the meds. Check with your doctor. Also this symptom can happen if you are not taking sufficient B12.

Good luck on your surgery and when you get back home let us know how it went.

Problems eating a yr after post op
James Marusek replied to Missmfp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That does not sound normal. If you are 18 months post-op, you should be able to consume a cup of food per meal; not just 2 forkfuls of food. I threw your symptoms into the internet and what seemed to pop out was "late dumping syndrome". http://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/dumping-syndrome.html I am not sure I believe this. It is possible that you might be experiencing problems relating to revisions. One individual in our bariatric support group meeting went from a lap band revision to RNY gastric bypass. Because of the scaring associated with the erosion caused by his band, his new pouch was constructed much smaller than typical. As a result, he was somewhat limited in the volume he could consume at each meal. I have personally found out that softer foods such as chili and Soups go down much easier than harder foods such as steaks. -
They generally occur at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4201 W. 3rd St, Room 1 on the west side of Bloomington on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8:00 PM.

It sounds a bit early if you had RNY gastric bypass surgery. -
When will GI upset stop?
James Marusek replied to gpmed's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After surgery I became lactose intolerant. Anytime I drank milk there was immediate pain in my stomach and then diarrhea. This condition lasted for around 2 months and then disappeared. Caution some Protein shakes contain lactose. -
Be a little more patient and let the magic happen.
