  1. Several months after surgery, I developed a problem with constipation. I talked to my nutritionist about the problem. One of her recommendations was to use Quest Protein bars because they contained fiber. I have used these to supplement my protein requirements generally when I am on the go.
  2. The following article describes my experience with RNY gastric bypass surgery. When solid foods came back in the options after surgery, I found that softer foods worked best for me. These were chili and Soups. I included a few recipes in the article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Is it really that MUCH trouble!?

Sometimes spammers will post on this website. I believe some of this is computer generated spam, that is why it doesn't make any sense. Generally these threads are from a first time poster and have a link in them.

I made it! 15 days post op

    Congratulations.

    Nausea

It may not have anything to do with the surgery but maybe a type of stomach flu.

    Feeling like CRAP

cat.jackson89 would you double check this with your nutricianist. My instructions were to begin immediately taking the full range of Vitamins once I arrived home. The only ones that were restrictive were the extra supplements that I was taking prior to surgery, such as Juvenon. The instructions for RNY patients were daily: 3 Flintstone's complete chewable Multivitamins Additional 65 milligrams elemental Iron daily for menstruating women 1500-1800 mg. Calcium citrate 500-1000 micrograms sublingual B12 daily or 1000 mcg IM injections once monthly 100 mg Thiamine (vitamin B1) daily Probiotics recommended Its hard to believe that you will get all this from a patch. Some surgeons may alter the mix slightly of what is required and there are some options available, but it is extremely important for you to meet your daily Vitamin requirements.

    Scale Won't Budge!

It is common to hit stalls along the way. So just keep meeting your daily Fluid, Protein and Vitamin requirements and let the magic happen.

    Pre-Op Psychiatric visit

Generally they are interested in identifying any underlying condition that may prevent you from successfully losing weight after weight loss surgery. And if so provide you with a support network to help you succeed. So just answer the questions honestly.

    Insomnia pre op

It is common to feel anxiety prior to surgery. I am not sure how to eliminate the insomnia. Exercise prior to bedtime may wear you out and help counter the insomnia. You might try a blend of essential oils specifically blended for that condition.

    Feeling like CRAP

Two weeks post-op and haven't been taking vitamins?
  13. I did not experience this. Emotions were in check after surgery. Fat cells store not only fat but also chemicals and hormones. As you decrease your fat cells, these are released into your system. So you are probably experiencing a hormone overload. Drink plenty of fluids to flush these hormones through your system. I suspect that when you reach your bottom weight, these effects should diminish.

    Breathe, just breathe

Many times - out of sight means out of mind. I remember years ago, I had to go on travel for over a year for work and I worked 2 shifts (swing and nightshift) around 80 hours a week. I did this for over a year. But those who were not away got promotions whereas I didn't because I was essentially invisible. A few weeks before your next annual performance review, jot down your accomplishments for the year. Highlight where you thought you did above and beyond. And then in a nice way, give your supervisor a copy. This must be done prior to the start of the review process.

Do you have odd pains, now?

When I was on blood thinners, I bruised very easily. For the first few weeks, my body looked like it was in a war zone. As I lost weight, the fat that provided a cushion to my legs started to disappear. So it made it uncomfortable to sleep. I found that placing a pillow between my legs at night helped when I slept on my side. Also the fat the normally insulated my rear end made sitting for any amount of time to be uncomfortable. So I began to use gel cushions. They can be found in Bed Bath and Beyond. I bought some for my computer chair and for the seat of my car.

    Reactive Hypoglycemia?

Here is a short article on reactive hypoglycemia (RH) after gastric bypass surgery. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass/ The individual that I know who had this problem did not have diabetes prior to surgery. I believe the first time he encountered the condition he fainted. But ever since then he learned to detect the signs and took immediate steps to preclude the onset. So after the first incident, he never repeated it. It seems that RH occurs between 1 1/2 to 3 hours after a meal. Since you woke up at 3 A.M. this might not be RH. Since your blood sugar when you had it check the next day was 60, that is on the low side. So the condition might be related to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or something else. Another possibility is orthostatic or postural hypotension. Here is a link to that condition. http://www.merckmanuals.com/home/heart-and-blood-vessel-disorders/symptoms-of-heart-and-blood-vessel-disorders/dizziness-or-light-headedness-when-standing-up This is one of those problems that you will need to discuss with your medical professionals.

    My first time posting

Congratulations on your weight loss. 240 pounds is fantastic. I am almost 3 years post-op RNY surgery. This article describes my approach in the "Maintenance" phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

    Sleep Apnea after WLS.

Prior to surgery, I snored so loud that it kept my wife awake all night long. She is a light sleeper. After surgery, I would wake up in the middle of the night and sometimes find my wife hovering over me. I was sleeping so quietly, she thought I died. And she was trying to see if I was still breathing.

    What Should I Be Doing

I would recommend 2 things. 1. Walk every day for 30 minutes from now on. It will dramatically improve your recovery period and reduce the amount of pain from the surgery. 2. Go cold turkey on caffeine and carbonated beverages. I gave up my 6 diet Coke a day habit at the start and lost 20 pounds on that change alone. When I went cold turkey on caffeine, I suffered from a week of deep withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. Since you have to give these up for the surgery anyways, it is better to get this done and over with as soon as possible. You do not want to compound the effects of surgery with the caffeine withdrawal syndrome.
  24. In Indiana, there is a center of excellence for weight loss surgery located in Indianapolis. That hospital not only has a complete staff of surgeons, nutritionists and other specialist. They also sponsor Bariatric Surgery Support Group meetings throughout the state. So you might touch base with the hospital where your surgery will be performed and query if they also sponsor or know of local area support groups meetings. Generally these meetings occur once per month and are free.
