Appetite and intensity of your training
James Marusek replied to Bigdog56's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I can't help you with the intense workout question, but this is the approach that I use in the "Maintenance" phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf -
It's Getting Real Now
James Marusek replied to NurseAmy1969's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It is common to get the jitters right before surgery. Good luck and let us know how things went when you are on the other side. -
Changes in Shoe Sizes?
James Marusek replied to IAwoman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Some but not all people drop a shoe size after weight loss surgery. For some people the width of their feet decrease. -
It sounds a little like dumping syndrome. Sometimes when I get dumping syndrome because I ate too much, I want to vomit. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. If I vomit, the condition eases up and goes away quicker. Otherwise it lasts for hours and hours. So generally I try and induce the vomiting by standing over the sink or stool, and bending over, with my head almost level with my stomach. Just trying to vomit generally is enough to cause vomiting. Yes, it is painful. Sometimes I think maybe I am having a heart attack. That is why I try and induce vomiting. In this condition trying to sleep is impossible. I cannot lay horizontally. It does not relieve the condition. I must sit up or stand up and be vertical. So generally if its bedtime, I sit and watch a couple more hours of television. Also I make it a point never, never eat before bedtime. But if it is dumping syndrome, generally there isn't a 3 hour delay. So you might be experiencing something else.

Severe heat exhaustion after RNY...
James Marusek replied to BlueBongo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Fat is a good insulator. As I lost weight, cold temperatures began to affect me more. I was actually more comfortable with the heat. But you are dealing with extreme heat. -
Congratulations.

So close, yet sooo far away!
James Marusek replied to WoodButchersWife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many surgeons require almost a day of pre-op testing and then a half day of training. From the time I finished my 6 month medically supervised weight loss program until surgery, it took around 3 months. And it was a busy time going through all the hoops. -
Having weight loss surgery can be expensive. In many cases, health insurance will pay for much of the costs. But the policies will vary from one company to the next, and many contain restrictions. So the first step is to determine if the operation will be covered. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. The process is much more complicated than walking into the hospital and undergoing an operation. It involves several professional disciplines. So as a result, several hospitals have created Centers of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery in various states. They are like a full meal deal. Everything is wrapped into one package. So they include an initial consultation which is generally free, discussions with a surgeon, nutritionist, psychologist, weight loss specialist (many insurances require a medically supervised weight loss program which includes diet and exercise prior to approval), sponsoring Bariatric Surgery support group meetings, pre-op physicals, almost a day of training, hospital that specializes in the surgery with a separate Bariatric Surgery ward, surgery, and periodic follow-up appointments with surgeon and nutritionist post surgery. So I would recommend that you track down one of these Centers of Excellence and make an initial consultation. You probably need to also bring your primary care physician onboard with your desire to have this type of surgery.

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and was in the hospital two days. But I was really ready to go home after one day.

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, I found that I could no longer swallow medium and large pill. Therefore I had to use pill crushers and pill splitters. But after 2 months, I regain my ability to swallow them. Therefore if you try and swallow one, you will quickly learn if you can swallow it whole.

Can I ever have coffee again?
James Marusek replied to lakegirlmn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Once your weight loss bottoms out and you transition into the maintenance phase you should be able to return to coffee. This will be at around a year to a year and a half post-op. But you should avoid all sugars and transition to either natural low calorie sweeteners like stevia or artificial sweeteners otherwise the weight might come back. -
my surgeon treating lap band removal and rny revision like separate cases?
James Marusek replied to offthebandwagon's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The only individual that I knew that went from lap band to RNY gastric bypass, did so because the band had eroded into his stomach and it was a life threatening situation if he didn't have it removed immediately. He was in danger of a rupture to his stomach. -
Mini Bypass or Full Bypass
James Marusek replied to Tommy Joe's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am really not familiar with the mini-gastric bypass. I do know they are very different operations. I had RNY gastric bypass and I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery. I am 3 years post-op RNY and GERD is no longer a problem. According to this link, it appears your fears may have some foundation (mini gastric bypass can be a problem for GERD patients). http://www.obesitycoverage.com/mini-gastric-bypass-the-good-bad-and-ugly/ But then again Bile Reflux is different than Acid Reflux (GERD). Biliary reflux, bile reflux or duodenogastric reflux is a condition that occurs when bile flows upward (refluxes) from the duodenum into the stomach and esophagus. Biliary reflux can be confused with acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). -

Is stress making my pouch hurt?
James Marusek replied to ScrambledSocialWorker79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some individuals who undergo RNY gastric bypass surgery experience Reactive Hypoglycemia. It is caused by low blood sugar a few hours after a meal. Here is a link that describes the condition. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/diabetes/expert-answers/reactive-hypoglycemia/faq-20057778 This condition can cause you to faint or lose your balance. Signs and symptoms of reactive hypoglycemia may include hunger, weakness, shakiness, sleepiness, sweating, lightheadedness, anxiety and confusion. Generally those that experience this condition can manage it without much difficulty because they can detect the signs and take something (such as a small glass of fruit juice) to stop it. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass It might be rather then the stress causing the fainting; is that the low blood sugar is causing the fainting and amplifying the stress. I have no idea about the stomach pains. Maybe it is an ulcer. -
Pre op weight loss
James Marusek replied to ahipchik1965's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are several aspects to the medically monitored weight loss program in addition to losing weight. 1. food journal that documents your meals. This is a good learning tool for knowing the calorie count on the meals that you eat. It documents your meals. 2. I also used the food journal to document my daily exercise. 3. I attended Bariatric Surgery Support Group meetings once per month during this time and received signed slips that showed my attendance. So even though you might not lose weight during this time, you have a documentation trail that shows that you really tried. This process leads to a referral letter from the doctor to the surgeon's office that will become part of the packet forwarded to the insurance company to show compliance. -
Good luck on your Obera Balloon insertion.

anyone else here had surgery more than 10 years ago?
James Marusek replied to Dawncherise's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. This is the approach I use in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf My blood work last year showed that I was deficient in Iron. They recommended that I use an iron supplement (65 mg Ferrous Sulfate). There are at least 2 types of iron supplements available and this chemistry is the one recommended for best absorption. It is important to consider iron time spacing with the Calcium supplements. If you take them the same time, the iron will not be absorbed. For that reason I take my iron just before bedtime so that it will not interfere with my calcium supplements and also any calcium I might absorb when I drink milk. -
Sleeve to Bypass
James Marusek replied to about face's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 3 years ago and I consider it to be one of the best decisions I ever made. -
Good luck on your upcoming surgery and let us know if we can be of any help.
-
Good luck on your upcoming surgery. RNY gastric bypass surgery is a good choice because you have GERD. Sleeve will only make the condition worse. After surgery as your fat cells break down they release hormones and other chemicals stored away in these cells. Thus you might experience a flush of hormones entering your system. This condition does not last forever. It is only during the weight loss phase around 6 or 8 months for RNY surgery. These hormones and chemicals are flushed through your kidneys and expelled in your urine. Therefore it is a good point to use filtered Water rather than city tap water during this time to reduce the load on your kidneys.
