Anyone having surgery in May
joleneB replied to Cupcake's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This has not been easy post op. I had surgery May 8 so I'm post op day 4. I am no where close to meeting my protein intake yet, I'm getting water down a little better but not where I should be. I have a constant feeling of being so full/ over stuffed that's it's hard to sip anything. I had 2 teaspoons of tomato soup yesterday for variety ( I was put on full liquids on day 2), the soup was gross, it's weird but this surgery does change the way food tastes. I have done some walking, my energy levels are still low. I have my one week follow up this Friday I hope things are better by then, I'm supposed to try to eat a couple bites of an egg before I go in. I hope you're all doing well & good luck to you all having surgery this week!! -

Jolene, I am using Bariatric Advantage high protein meal replacement. I got a vanilla base so that later on I could add any other fruit to it. For now, I am adding Hershey's cocoa unsweetened powder. Also the nutrionist recommended to only use 1 scoop of the protein powder immediately post op in 8 oz of skim milk and I add 1 tsp of the cocoa powder. They felt that using 2 scoops would be too thick! I hope you feel better soon!! Take care and get some rest. I did a little better although I only got about 4 ounces of the protein shake down all day. I did ok with Water and actually ate a yogurt. So baby steps I know each day gets better. I took no pain meds today. -

Congrats on going home safely! Big steps is now behind you. The bloating is normal .. To get rid of it , it helps to walk around the house or yard so that you can start passing gas! The fluids are manageable. Y ou can do it just remember how far you've come. You need to flush out those ketones that you are producing as you burn up fat. The fluids will help to keep you energized and will flush those ketones out of your system. You'll be great! Let us know how you are doing! Good luck! Thanks Cookie. Well I tried the Protein shake this morning and it didn't go to well, I felt really sick, the smell and taste didn't sit well so I only got an ounce down and went back to bed. That was at 5 this morning. So I'm gonna try again. My stomach is growling and making weird noises lol. Pain is not too bad today. -

I'll be on my way home tonight. I wonder how I'll get all my fluids in. They said I can start protein shakes tomorrow so I'm happy about that . I'm supposed to try to eat a small bit of an egg next Friday before I see my dr in follow up, if it goes down ok he will advance my diet Friday. I feel really swollen and bloated, I'll be glad when that goes away. -
Hair Loss/Celiac/hypo thyroid/Lap Band to Gastric Bypass/going back to work

I'm going back to work in 3 weeks, some have gone back sooner. As far as driving I was told to wait about a week and as long as you're not taking any narcotics. I'm worried about the hair loss too, it think everyone has experienced it done but some more than others. -

How was the overall experienceSo far the pain experience is so much less than I expected, i do feel swollen and it feels "heavy" or like " tugging" inside my belly. I've had no nausea, I'd say overall I'm very happy. -

I had my surgery yesterday!! I'll be going home tonight around 5 or 6 as long as I'm able to take my liquids ok. I'm a little sore today I've been taking the Toradol every 6 hrs, I'm not using the morphine it makes me too groggy. Definitely gave the left shoulder pain but it is bearable. Had my X-ray thus morning to check for leaks and everything looks good so I'll be getting liquids soon. -

My Dr. Scheduled me for May 8, but I haven't heard yet if my insurance approved it. I'm doing the " fast track" and have Coventry, hopefully all will go as planned. I'm nervous and excited!! Have my first support group meeting tomorrow, then next Monday I have an all day appt that includes the nutritionist, psychiatrist, a fit/ exercise person and someone else. I'm ready to lose 100 pounds, say goodbye to my CPAP machine and hopefully my hbp meds too !

My starting weight was 256. How are you holding up on the liquids? Oh and found out my surgery is at 730 AM so I'm happy about that! I didn't want to be scheduled late in the day. -

Do you have a GNC store around you? I got to thinking, I add skim milk to bariatric advantage and water to gnc so the calories are probably less Than bariatric advantage. I can't remember if I stated, I can have protein shakes, broth, sf jello & Popsicles.[/QUOTI have added some skim milk it does help a little bit. The broth has been a life saver all this sweet stuff all the time isn't very good. Good luck on your journey!!!! -

Jolene how long are you on the pre-op? We have the same date and I have to do 14 days. I am also on day 4. Just having a hard time with the protein shakes and went today and got a few different ones. I already finished all my pre-op blood work and stuff. I also ordered the Celebrate vitamins and feel exactly like you. If I can give up my other meds for daily vitamins, then I would much rather do that. Keep up the good work.Rchobby I also have to do it for 14 days, actually the 14th day is no protein shakes just clear liquids. This next week and a half is going to move fast for us!!! Where are you located? I'm in the Atlanta area. I guess I'll find out tomorrow what time my surgery is, I hope I'm scheduled for early morning. Stay strong we can do this???? -

Tebowfan, tell me about it they do not taste good at all. I've even added sf syrup to the vanilla but it still isn't great. I haven't got on the scales yet, I'm thinking I'll leave the scales alone until after surgery it just depresses me! I can tell I'm losing though. -

Well starting day 4 of liquid diet and I feel sooo much better, I can do this. My energy level has been really low I hope it picks up. I finish my pre op tomorrow with EKG, CXR and blood work then surgery!!! I have 3 women that I work with that had the bypass all within the last year, they all look so beautiful and healthy. I've been looking at all the youtube video transformations, gotta say I'm a little worried about the hair loss though! Some seem to have it worse than others. Anyway, off to buy some gas ex and order my vitamins, I'm getting the "Celebrate" vitamins. We were given a few different choices and these seemed to taste the best and have to take less of these than the others. People have made negative comments like " you have to take these vitamins every day for the rest if your life!" Like that's such a big deal...... I take blood pressure meds every single day, and wear a CPAP every single night, I'd rather give those up and take my vitamins every single day!!! Have a great day everyone!! -

Today is my first day and I am having a hard time. Not hungry--just the side effects. Hope tomorrow is better for us! I'm doing much better today, dr said feeling bad and diarrhea for about 3 days is normal. We have to use the Bariatric Advantage protein shakes and there's lots of fiber. Hope you're doing well today!!! -

Started my liquid diet today, so far ok but I do feel a little light headed. All I did was pee today lol and I was so busy at work so it kept me occupied. I also got the chicken soup ( chicken broth) from a Japanese restaurant, that helps since everything else is so sweet. Surgery is May 8th, I have an appt with the surgeon again tomorrow, then pre op Monday. Also heard today that my insurance accepted everything..... Getting nervous now!! I'm an RN, hopefully I'll be a good patient lol! -
