I've found the only time I ever stalled with my weight loss is when I wasn't eating enough.

@@*Lexie* Great post. I like to think of this whole process as kind of like having kids. Everyone *thinks* they know what it's going to be like. They imagine all the good parts....the cherubish faces, always well behaved, always willing to please us, always respectful, perfect children we are going to have. Then you actually have them, and realize although there are many, many good things, raising kids is one of the hardest but most rewarding things you're ever going to do if you are willing to put the work in. And most of the time, it's NOTHING like you expected

There are at least THREE Thanksgiving threads now. Just saying.

I had a 3 month diet, was trying to quit smoking, AND had a foot surgery, so I'd only lost 5 pounds. Insurance approved me within 48 hours I had Cigna.

I have learned an unfortunate fact with it just being me and hubby in the house (and BOTH of us being WLS patients),,,,a lot of food goes to waste. But I would much rather throw away moldy rice than eat the way I used to eat and waste my life, not just the food. Like Lipstick said, just make half. And if you still are throwing a little away...meh. We all got fat from our parents forcing us to clean our plates because of starving children in China. Just make the proper adjustments as needed to keep you and your family satisfied

@@Nibbler Yup, WAY too early to start panicking. What you're going through is completely normal. At around 3-5 weeks, we all go through a stall. What you're going through, although you see a gain, is just a stall and an adjustment.( I gain when I stall, too) You know as well as I do you can't gain weight on 500 calories a day. It's just your body doing it's thing after a large loss the last few weeks. Also, this process isn't as fluid as people would like to think. We don't just magically drop weight right on schedule every week for a year. If you graphed it, the lines would look more like stair steps. Up, down, flat....it's just how the process goes. This may be your first stall, but it certainly won't be your last! It's all normal. Like @@Inner Surfer Girl says "Embrace the stall!" Early out ( under 4 or 5 months) I believe losing weight will just happen organically, naturally. After that, I do believe that if you're not following plan and grazing all day or eating too many sugars and starchy carbs, you CAN gain weight or stall it completely. Only you will know if you are following your program well enough to know whether a stall or gain is just an adjustment or frankly how you've been eating. That's why it's so important to track and journal during the weight loss process. To hold yourself accountable and be able to make the necessary changes to keep the weight loss moving along the best you can.

And to piggy back on that, your restriction wanes a little as time goes by, also. Instead of eating a few bites of a fattening food, some may be able to eat a small plate of fattening food. Although we will never be able to eat near as much as we could before, as time goes on, even a little more can add up to many calories consumed over a day or week. That's why it's imperative we set up healthy eating habits early out for when the time comes where restriction is less and hunger returns.

How Often Do You Actually Cook?
Babbs replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I love to cook! I cook SO MUCH MORE after surgery than before. I cook 5-6 days a week. I like the idea of knowing the exact ingredients of things as opposed to going out and never being sure. It keeps me honest I guess. -
I have pickles all the time! They are a great snack when you want something with crunch.

I am 20, 4 days post-op and very concerned.
Babbs replied to Glogyal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, it sounds like you've been reading the site for a while, so you should know that regret is VERY normal early out. Believe me, your regret will soon be replaced with nothing but happiness as you heal and things start becoming more routine and you're losing weight. Just work your program, move a little more, and you won't regret it ever again! -
Anyone else NOT on a pre-op diet?
Babbs replied to mcp_vsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have one either. I was pretty savvy at that point after months of research, and asked him why no pre op diet since I heard shrinking the liver for surgery was the reason. He stated he had gone to a conference where they explained that the actual amount that the liver shrinks is so small, it really makes no difference in the outcome of the surgery. I was just thankful I didn't have to deal with it! -
I'M NOT EVEN HUNGRY BUT EVERYTHING LOOKS SO GOOD!?!
Babbs replied to Glogyal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That, my dear, is what we refer to as "head hunger". And it can be a total b i t c h to deal with! As soon as your start more solid foods, it will pass -
Won't it be great when the day comes when you won't have to worry about where you sit anymore? Keep that incident as a motivator! And it's not minor at all. It's a big deal to those of us who struggle with obesity. We've all been there!

What have you learned to love since WLS?
Babbs replied to dhrguru's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Zucchini noodles! I was a Pasta fanatic pre surgery. I couldn't imagine not having it. But the "Zoodles" have been an amazing substitute! I also hated green Beans. Now post surgery, I love them! Yay! -
As long as it doesn't become too much of a slippery slope for you, enjoy the bread! For me, I stayed away from it completely until I was almost at goal. Now in maintenence, I'm finding bread and crackers slipping more and more back in, and now I'm up 1.4 pounds as of this morning. Time to cut it back out again. I'm just too darn sensitive to it.

Babbs replied to Terra B's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was so ready to have the surgery, if they said it was going to be done the week of Christmas, I would have done it no question. But that's just me. You do what you feel more comfortable with. Also, they may not give you much of a choice as to when you schedule surgery. My surgeon just happened by some miracle to have an opening a week after I got approved, and I know if I balked and didn't take that opening it would have been another 6 weeks before they could have gotten me in for surgery. -
Anyone With Stomach Pain/Reflux Before Having Sleeve Surgery?
Babbs replied to Pea523's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly @@Pea523, my husband had it 9 years ago, and he's done really well. No complications whatsoever, and has pretty much kept the weight off. He actually wanted me to get the RNY, but I'm not the best vitamin taker, and that is something you MUST do with the byoass. Like I said, I'm basically happy with my decision for the sleeve, and the GERD has subsided some. -

Anyone With Stomach Pain/Reflux Before Having Sleeve Surgery?
Babbs replied to Pea523's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Pea523 No polyps that they could see. Just a little inflammation. In other words, they don't really know why I regurgitate my food. I've done it all my life. Maybe someday I'll have them delve a little deeper, or look into a revision if it starts causing problems with my esophagus. -
Okay that is just cool! I think I'm going to try it today!

Elliptical - How long did you last your first time? lol
Babbs replied to ♥dreamable's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was like you at first. I could barely do a minute. Like the poster above said, I started a Couch 25K program 9 months ago, and that REALLY built my tolerance up. Now I can run 3 miles on the treadmill, and probably can go 4 on the elliptical if I wanted. You gotta start slow and build up tolerance. Just takes consistency and time -
Anyone With Stomach Pain/Reflux Before Having Sleeve Surgery?
Babbs replied to Pea523's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup. Same stuff as you, but my surgeon didn't mention ONE WORD about doing RNY instead, which I found odd. I did know that the sleeve could make it worse, but chose to do it anyway. I do sometimes wish I had gone the bypass route to be rid of the GERD once and for all, but nothing I can do about it now really. My surgeon kept me on liquids for 6 weeks straight after because every time I would eat, I would regurgitate it back up without fail. He thought letting the sleeve "loosen up" by keeping me on liquids would help. It did a little, but not much. At 15 months out, it has subsided quite a bit, but I still will regurgitate or have heartburn if I eat too much or the wrong thing. I'm on Omezerapale, which I take 2x a day. I also take tums if the heartburn gets too bad. Even so, this has been totally worth it to me. I can live with a little reflux.
