16 days out and back in the ICU
photochick replied to photochick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Update.... I spent 6 days in the ICU and another week in the hospital. I am home now with 2x daily injections of blood thinners. This was a horrible experience and I feel like I am starting to recover from the beginning. I am super weak and can't get much down. Plus, the damn shots make me nauseous! Feel like I can't win right now.,... at least I am out of the hospital though. Thank you for all of you kind thoughts and words. -
I just got home from a 2 week hospital stay in the ICU and hospital with 3 major blood clots in my liver, intestine, and pancreas. I had my surgery April 24th and was hospitalized about 2 weeks later. I'd never had any past issue with blood clots either and have had past surgeries with out complications so I was not particularly concerned about it this time. I am now out and on 2x daily injection blood thinners and it sucks but its better than the hospital.

Hi Everyone, I was sleeved exactly 2 weeks ago today. When I woke up from surgery I had a mild pain in my back under my right shoulder but otherwise felt pretty good. The back started to get worse while in the hospital but the didn't think much of it and just upped my pain meds. Then, last Friday, a week after being home, I woke up in tears and felt like I couldn't breath. The back pain had gotten so bad it felt like every muscle was seized up. I tried to take it easy over the weekend and used the pain meds I had from surgery but those barely even touched it. When I called the surgeon Monday morning they said that its possible that during the hernia repair a bubble of Co2 got trapped between the diaphragm and the back/shoulder muscle and it could last any where from 2-4 weeks. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advise on how to alleviate some of this pain? Thanks so much for any help!

I was sleeved last thursday also and have had a couple rough days at home. sleeping in my bed for the first time last night was amazing! I still have a lot of discomfort when I swallow, even small sips. Do you? It might be due to the hernia they repaired but it is super frustrating to try and get all this Fluid in when it hurts every time I swallow. How long will you be on liquids? Are you finding yourself hungry?

So tomorrow morning is surgury and I am super excited but I woke up this morning with a intense migraine. Normally I can take care of these with pain meds and imitrex but this one just keeps getting worse. I am on the 2nd day of Clear liquids also. Is this normal? Would they postpone the surgery if it is still as bad tomorrow? Has anyone else had experience with migraines with surgery? Thanks

True! I am hoping that if its still bad when I get there they will give me something for the pain while I am in pre op too! Thanks!

Thank you Linda. I am trying to get down as much Water as possible... ugh! only 12 more hours to go. I guess thats not to bad, right!

I've been a portrait photographer for years and I say absolutely do it! Maybe see if you can grab a cup of coffee with your photographer before the shoot to discuss any concerns you might have. Just be honest about what worries you might have then talk about what looks you want to go for. Some women also find it's easier to have a female photographer for boudoir too. Good luck! I'm sure you will rock it. The best thing you can wear is confidence.

How long to take off with a more physical job?
photochick posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, My surgery is in 6 days and I am a little concerned that I might not have taken enough time off work afterwords. My situation is a little unique because I am self employed and run a portrait and wedding photography business. I plan to take a full week completely to fully rest. Then an additional 4 weeks to work only in my office and not shooting or out in the field as it is a very physical job which can include quite a bit of lifting, climbing, squatting, etc. So my question is, when you're 5 weeks out from surgery, is it realistic to return to a fairly active job with out any chances of injury? Thanks so much!! -
Yep! 24th here!

How do you know if you have a hernia?
photochick posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I keep seeing that its pretty common that people go into surgery and end up having to have a unknown/diagnosed hernia repaired. Is there any way to find out if you have one before surgery? Is seems like this is a factor that causes quite a bit more pain in recovery. Has anyone had one diagnosed before surgery and known what caused it? -
Are you open or private about surgery and why?

I hadn't planned on telling anyone other than my immediate family. However,in the months since being approved I have been trying to plan and prepare for my upcoming surgery on April 24th. I have found that because I am self employed and trying to schedule time off, dealing will clients, while also juggling my 3 children's schedules, it just became to complicated to either with hold the full truth of the situation or make up another excuse. So while I haven't gone out of my way to tell everyone, if it comes up with some one and it is relevant to our working or personal relationship... I tell them. It's been a little uncomfortable at first but it was surprisingly a positive response. There was only one person who asked why I would want to do that so I looked at her with a completely serious face and told her... "Well, I don't want to be the first to go down when the zombie apocalypse comes." There was a long moment of awkward silence and then we both laughed... what else could she say! I don't know... screw it I guess. I've decided to document this whole journey in photos seeing as how I am a photographer so I guess it will get out there eventually anyway
