Is anyone freezing?
maxcimax replied to LisaDomalewski's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A few months ago this question was asked about being cold & there was a posting from someone that eating considerably less carbs is the reason for this. Carbs help heat your body. I think this must be true because I have noticed that when I'm keeping my carbs down under 60g I'm colder. Has anyone else heard this? -
Two years out and what I wish I had done differently immediately post op
maxcimax replied to Cheer Mama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going back on the liquid diet for a few days & see what happens. For the last month I have had a 1 to 3 lb. gain/loss. It keeps going up & down. I need to re-evaluate what I'm eating. I'm one of those people that has been able to tolerate pretty much anything. I didn't have a sweet tooth for about 6 months but it is starting to come back. And that's not a good thing. I started buying Bariwise Jello & pudding & that has helped. i also keep sugar free jello that I can just grab when the sweet tooth kicks in. I try to keep my carbs under 60 & I haven't been doing that. I do eat a lot of eggs & need to eat more cottage cheese & string cheese. I've just gotten to lazy about planning my meals. I do keep a food journal & that has helped me realize how much I do eat & what I eat. My calories have been around 1400 - 1600 & i need to get that back 1000. I see my doctor in May for my 1 year checkup & I need to get at least 10 more lbs. off or I might have an unhappy doctor. I'm still glad I had the sleeve surgery. I have probably unloaded half of my closet!! Yay. -
You should call your doctor. Blood clots are not to be messed with. I had one in my lung after a hysterectomy about 6 years ago & I was extremely ill. I spent the next 7 days in the hospital being given a blood thinner thru an IV. DON'T WAIT!! Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck. I hope it's nothing but your doctor should still look at your issue.

Protein helps curb your hunger. At least it does for me. While you are on liquids drink Protein shakes such as the Syntrax nectar (individual packs until you figure out what flavors you like) & Premier Protein. I was a bit nauseated in the first 2 or 3 weeks & drank Unjury's chicken Soup. I helped me a lot & has a lot of protein. When I was allowed to have soft foods I ground up chicken & mixed it with mayonnaise. I also ate (& still do) Tuna & Salmon, hard boiled eggs & cottage cheese. I fight "head hunger" a lot so I try & make sure I am getting 60+ grams of protein in. Good luck with your journey. You will be glad you did this. It's not easy to follow the food rules so hang in there.

Anyone else having to fight " mind hunger"
maxcimax replied to tfarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad I'm not the only one that fights "head hunger". It is a struggle at times. I keep a food journal & it helps to keep me on track. On days when I have to many calories & carbs I just get right back on the program the next day. The worse thing a person can do is beat themselves up. I also watch "My 600 lb Life". That gives me a lot to think about. -
My 600 pound life
maxcimax replied to holliwood1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only just discovered this program. Makes me more determined to stay on program with my Sleeve. I watched one program & couldn't get over the woman arguing with the doctor as to why she wasn't losing weight. If you aren't going to listen to your doctor then why put yourself thru the surgery. -
I stopped crushing my meds after about 3 months. I take meds 3 times a day & was tired of having to mix the crushed pills up in juice or water. Yuck! I haven't had any problems with my prescription meds or OTC meds. I buy chewable multivitamin, calcium & fiber.

anyone hear about an age limit for sleeve surgery?
maxcimax replied to robga999's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 70 & I had to get permission from my Internist/Cardiologist & my Pulmonary doctors. They both were very supportive of my decision & are very happy with the results. I've been able to quit using a CPAP & have been able to cut down on the oxygen levels for my home concentrator & portable oxygen tanks. My Internist/Cardiologist has had other patients over 70 that had the Sleeve & have also done very well with it. -
Best decision ever
maxcimax replied to holliwood1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree. I am very happy I did this & I feel so much better. Congrats on the weight loss. -
How do you get your protein in? I am just started my 4th week post op.
maxcimax replied to LisaLou30's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon & NUT never said I couldn't have shakes. I still have 1 on most days. I have a friend that had her Sleeve surgery 4 years ago & she still drinks a shake a day. I do eat a lot of eggs, cheeses, chicken & tuna. Good thing I like these foods. -
When I was considering WLS I called my cousin who had a Lap Band done a few years ago. She has gained most of her weight back but she doesn't work at keeping it off. She is the one that told me about the Sleeve. She has a friend that had the Sleeve & has done very well with it. I decided to do the Sleeve & am very happy I did this. My surgeon doesn't even do the Lap Band because the success rate is so low. No matter what kind of WLS you have you still need to work at it. You need to be committed to the change in eating habits. There are somethings I avoid such as rice, muffins & ice cream. The hardest thing to avoid, for me, is Pasta. If you aren't willing to change your habits then you will be unhappy with your WLS. I just started watching My 600 lb Life & it facinates me the people that won't listen to their doctor. I even see this on here sometimes. The Sleeve is a great tool for weight loss & I highly recommend it. I've been blessed in the fact that I have not had any issues with the surgery & I'm 71. I don't have to use my oxygen as much (as long as I'm not walking a lot) & I'm off of my CPAP. Yay!!

I use the MyFitnessPal on my iPhone & then transfer the info to my Diet Minder, a written diary. This keeps me honest & on track. I don't care about the percentages. I just want to know about calories, carbs & Protein. I made a list of foods that are low carb to help me. I've been getting WAY to many carbs. I try to stay around 50 grams of carbs but for the last 2 or 3 weeks I have a lot of days where I get 80+. That's not good. Carbs have a big effect of my weight loss. My doctor has me on 1,000 calories/day but I have a tendency to get 1200+ each day. This is something I have to work on & I started today. I also use a Fitbit to track my steps & Water. It's easy to list my liquid because the Fitbit is on my arm. I will warn anyone who is thinking about a wrist Fitbit. If you have a lot of arm motion (such as knitting, crocheting, sewing) then the Fitbit picks that movement up as steps. My daughter got the clip on Fitbit & clips it to her waist band. This eliminates the motion issue being counted as steps. I hope this helps. We are all different so what works for one person won't necessarily work for someone else. Good luck.

Best Protein powders for a limited budget
maxcimax replied to bucktoothzombie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I buy Syntrax Nectur in the individual packages ($1.99 ea.) from The Vitamin Shoppe & Amazon. This way I can try different flavors. They run about 24 grams ea. I then mix these packages with Silk/Soy milk & get another 6 grams. I also use the Premier Protein shakes in Strawbery & Chocolate. They have 30 grams of protein & cost just over $2.00 a serving. You can get these from their website, from Costco or Krogers. Other grocery stores sell it & Premier Protein's web site will tell you who sells it in your area. I also eat a lot of eggs - poached. Tuna & chicken will give you a lot of protein too. Use unflavored protein & mix it in your foods for more protein. You have to make sure you don't put it in hot liquid over 140 degrees, or there about. Good luck with your new Sleeve. -
I was 70 yrs & 5 mos. Glad I had this surgery. My skin sags but I can breathe better & my knees don't hurt. LOL. I wish I had done this a long time ago but this current type of Sleeve surgery wasn't around a long time ago. You really have to be to a point where food is no longer a big concern to you. I woke up one morning & realized I could care less about foods like pizza, ice cream, muffins, etc & that surgery was more important. I was going to have a lapband because I didn't know about the Sleeve. I called my cousin about the lapband (she has one) & she told me about the Sleeve. So glad she did.

DOES LOSING THIS WEIGHT HURT?
maxcimax replied to downsizingdiva's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually my aches & pains have decreased with the weight loss because of my arthritis. I was very tired for the first month but I'm past that now. -
how do you answer the questions from people who don't know you had wls?
maxcimax replied to whirlwen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have never had an issue with telling anyone. If the subject comes up I just tell them what I did. I even had the opportunity to tell a lady that was thinking about the Sleeve what a great decision I had made. She was very large & I hope she goes on to do the Sleeve for health reasons. -
I already wear a medical id bracelet because I take a blood thinner, allergic to penicillin & have COPD that requires oxygen. I got my bracelet from Amazon. It's an expansion bracelet & I can add other medical issues to it. It wasn't expensive. I saw they now have a piece for Grastic Sleeve which I want to get along with a couple of others. Personally I think this might be a good idea to have one.

I get hiccups too after I eat. This tells me I have eaten enough. They don't last long, only a few minutes.

7 months out- hit a big wall. Not losing at all
maxcimax replied to mi75's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm glad to see these comments. I'm 8 months out & have been losing weight very slowly these last 2 or 3 months. My support group is starting an exercise class 2 times a week & I signed up for that. I haven't been exercising so I'm hoping this will get me going. I still keep a food diary & I have been eating to many carbs so that is being changed too. Carbs are my biggest enemy. My weight has been doing the same thing - up 1/2 or even 1 pound & down that much. I just take it in stride & try to be more careful what I eat. I'm thinking of going back on the pre-op diet a couple of days a week & see if that doesn't help. -
unjury chicken broth is good. It kept me from being a little nauseated during the liquid stage. My surgeon recommended it. I like the Syntrax unflavored Protein. Just be sure your liquid is not really hot. I think the maximum temp is 140 degrees. For regular protein I use Syntrax nectar in the individual servings packages. This way I don't get bored with one flavor by buying a container. I also keep Premier Protein in my refrigerator that I can grab & run or if I feel lazy & don't want to blend anything to drink. Good luck with your journey. It is so worth it.

I too suffer from gout. Fortunately my medications for my gout work. I take 400 mg of Allopurinol & 0.6 mg of Colchicine every day & haven't had a flare up in about 2 years. What a blessing that's been!! I've had gout in both feet & wrists. Not fun. My doctor put me in one of those "walking" shoes that you can make as tight as you want & for my wrist I used a wrap that went from my fingers to half way up my arm. There is no way I could ever have put heat or ice on my foot. You know yourself that even covering your foot with a bed sheet is almost intolerable. I also take Nabumatone for my arthritis & I believe that's an NSAID. So far I have not had any problems with these medications. I hope this little bit of information helps you. Especially the medications I take. I might also add that I do not eat seafood. I only eat fish such as Cod. There are some other foods you should stay away from because they aggravate your gout but shellfish is the worst. I sure do miss shrimp & crab but it's not worth the pain.

how long is the Gastric Sleeve surgery ?
maxcimax replied to boosh10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actual surgery itself was about 1 1/2 hrs because I had a Hiatal Hernia repair. I think that adds abut 30 mins. 3 hours must include everything you have to go thru from check-in time to being taken to your hospital room. Good luck with your surgery. You will be really glad you did this. -
NEctar Whey Protein Powder.. Grand Rapids, MI
maxcimax replied to TieraLeone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I go to The Vitamin Shoppe to get mine. You can also order online from The Vitamin Shoppe. I get the individual serving packs so I can vary my shakes. I pay $1.99 each. I still drink the Protein Shakes also but it was about a month after surgery before I could stomach them again (No pun intended). -
How's your skin holding up?
maxcimax replied to mnmlst's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad this issue came up. I'm 71 & have lost about 70 lbs & I sag everywhere!! I read somewhere that it takes 2 years for your skin to tighten up. At my age I doubt it will tighten up very much. I'll just continue to cover up the bat wings & sagging tummy with my clothes. I hate girdles but I might have to bite the bullet & wear one under dresses. At this point I feel better & my oxygen is better so that is more important to me than sagging skin. -
Advice about calorie count please . . .
maxcimax replied to RedDirtRoads's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It seems that doctors & NUTs all differ in what they want us to do. Here is what my doctor had me do. 1st 2 weeks - liquids. 600 - 800 calories. I drank 3 Protein shakes a day & unjury chicken Soup. I'm not sure what else I drank but I did get in my protein requirement but had trouble getting in 800 calories. Probably was more like about 600. Next 4 weeks - soft foods. 600 - 800 calories. I still drank 2 protein shakes a day, poached eggs, strained Soups, sugar free Jello & pudding, cottage cheese. After these 6 weeks were past I was allowed to slowly introduce solid foods. I was able to get in my 800 calories easier. I ate chicken, tuna, eggs, cottage cheese, jello, pudding & I still drank 1 protein shake per day. After 12 weeks I was told to increase my calories to 1000. Everything else was the same. I keep a journal & I use My Fitness Pal on my cell phone. This helps me to know how many calories, protein & carbs I have consumed. I do watch my carbs & try to not go over 50g a day but believe me, that is very hard. Hope your NUT gets back to you but in the meantime maybe the information that everyone has given you will help you in your journey.
