  1. Aloha all, My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for April 21, 2014. I've done such a good job logging my food and making healthy eating choices since December when I joined my hospitals program, but since actually scheduling my surgery a week ago though I've found it so hard to avoid my old pitfalls. Perhaps now I have, "this is my last chance" mentality- but it is ruining all the work I've done so far. I have had nightmares about gaining weight and then denying me the day if my surgery because of it. This has been a logistic nightmare to plan because I'm a teacher and have to take so much time off work. I would love some encouraging words, stories or tips to get me through my last 29 days before surgery. Thanks all!

    April 2014 pre-op group

I was so confused about all this "pre-op" diet talk so I called my nutritionist. I guess every person and every program is different. My doc isn't having me do a liquid diet or anything, but in the program I've been in since December I have had to log every bite I eat and sip I take. They slowly get us to work on making changes in our eating habits (the 25 Healthy Habits), and we see the nutritionist at least three times (2-4 weeks in between each visit) and she doesn't clear us until she sees a real change in our eating choices. We don't keep track of calories- portion control is not the focus because obviously the surgery takes care of that. What they focus on is the type of food consumed (low sugar, low fat, plenty veggies, etc), making sure you get enough grams of protein and oz of water daily. Because of this for most patients they don't do a pre-op diet.
  3. I've been cleared by nutritionist, psychologist, and bariatric nurse. My surgery is scheduled for April 21st
