Premier Protein Shakes-only 1/3 protein absorbed?
onajournee posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
FYI-Had 6 week meeting with my NUT yesterday and somehow in our conversation I mentioned Premier Protein shakes and their 30gms of protein. She said those only have 11gms of usable/absorbable protein per shake. I knew the protein in them was the kind she had previously cautioned against using because it was a protein CONCENTRATE or BLEND, but I guess I assumed I was still getting 20gm or so from it. I guess you get what you pay for-cheaper costco shakes vs quality Protein Shakes. Obviously other NUT's may have different research or opinions on this, but I felt like I just needed to let people know what i found out because i wish i had known this earlier in my journey, and I'd hate to have someone who is using a lot of Premier shakes for their protein totals be getting too little protein, because we all know how important that is. Just something to think about. I'll be sticking with the whey isolate products so i know without a doubt how much protein I'm getting from the product. -
6 weeks post op-What size meals are people eating?
onajournee posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks post op and feel hungry sometimes as soon as an hour or two after eating, even though i'm eating protein with each meal/snack. It makes me wonder if i should be eating more at each meal so i wondered how much volume people are eating at one time approx. 6 weeks post op. -
Premier Protein Shakes-only 1/3 protein absorbed?
onajournee replied to onajournee's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
recycled-no, but for someone relying heavily on the protein from these drinks for their protein totals it should encourage them to do their research -
How soon did you return to work?
onajournee replied to countrygrl1978's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I went back after 10 days and it was fine. -
My Dr said okay from day 1 post op on.

Ask Dr about Levsin prescription if you don't already take it-it's for esophageal spasms and helped alot. I also had hernia repair and i felt like it helped me be able to drink more-less spasms.

5 days post op weight still there.
onajournee replied to MOLLSY's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gained 10lbs water weight in the hospital, but by a week or so post op it was all gone plus some. I remember losing almost 5lbs in 1 day. My bladder was working overtime that day! -

Baby food during puree phase?
onajournee replied to ArcusX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My NUT said babyfood is fine, I eat a jar of fruits a day, either organic apple/banana, or apple/blueberry. It goes down so easy because it's soooo pureed that it fits in well after some protein at a meal. -
10 weeks post op - No desire to eat - normal?
onajournee replied to abbyabby's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With the high Protein shakes and supplements out there you can get all your protein in with very little calories which isn't healthy. Your body needs a certain amount of calories. What you listed you ate in a day isn't many calories at all and seems like it wouldn't add up to enough protein either. I would keep track of your calories and protein for a few days and let your Dr and NUT how much of each you're taking in and see what they suggest. -
1 Year Later...600 calories?
onajournee replied to fluffyinwv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
600 seems too low. I also think 1000-1200 range is where you should be for good health and weight loss -
4 weeks Post Op and Stuck
onajournee replied to DaddyMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved May 6, and have lost 20lbs and have also been stalled for 2 weeks and am still stalled! I knew stalls would happen so was determined to be patient and get thru it without letting it get to me too much, but it just went on too long and I got very frustrated. I weighed in June 1 so I'd have my May total loss and then I had my husband hide the scale and i'll weigh again in a week or so. Can't get on the scale another day and have it say the same thing! Hope the scale will soon move for all of us who are stalled. -
42 grams of protein in 3.8 oz
onajournee replied to MFoster9812's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My NUT said whey protein isolate is what to look for because it's a pure, highly absorbable, and fast absorbable form of protein. She said whey protein concentrate or blends are often up to 30% less absorbed protein than what's listed. Even if you only got 70% of the protein listed from those shots-that's still a lot of protein for small amount of fluid, but just keep in mind when adding up your protein totals for the day that you may not be getting all the protein listed for those shots. -
How do you get 70gm of protein without shakes
onajournee replied to Unhappysleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It makes a difference how many time a day you're eating something as far as how easy it is to get all your Protein in without shakes, My NUT recommends eating 3 meals and 2-3 Snacks per day, but I've seen some whose NUT recommend just 3 meals a day only. I actually struggle getting enough calories in more than the protein. A couple non shake ideas I have that haven't already been mentioned are Quaker Weight Control instant Oatmeal-Maple and Brown sugar flavor-has 7gm of protein per packet and when made with cup of skim milk 15gms. You can find a lot of meat/bean chili's that have a lot of protein, I have one with 20gms of protein (I put in blender ,I'm still in pureed stage). 1 cup of sugar free pudding has 8gm of protein-from the milk and if you add unflavored powder you can make it even higher in protein. I love a cup of the SF cheesecake pudding for my last snack of the day. Not too heavy close to bedtime. You can also buy some meals from online bariatric stores that are high in protein, my bariatric center has their own store which carries a lot of different brands, that's where I get the chili from. -
Surgery Glue on Incision
onajournee replied to Krystal0528's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to shower right away. Just told to pat dry incisions. Glue came off about a week to 10 days later. -
My NUT says no eggs or melted cheese in my puree stage. I was bummed. Sounds pretty good right now.

Facial flushing
onajournee replied to tiredtwinmommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bad facial flushing from my Dilaudid. My face was flushed in hospital and i didn't think much of it, and then the first time i took the pain pill at home my face was horribly flushed within 20 minutes. I looked it up on the internet and it was a possible side effect of that med. My pain wasn't too bad anyway, so just took tylenol after that. -
2 Days post op - stomach cramping
onajournee replied to Sissy02's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was given prescription post op for valium for muscle relaxing, and levsin for esophageal spasms, and both worked great. If it continues to be a problem maybe ask your Dr about those, if you aren't already taking them. -
Full Liquids to Pureed – ideas please?!
onajournee replied to NewMe052014's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I disagree with the 2 comments about not nutritionally needing fruits and veggies right now. They have nutritional benefits that your body needs and can't be gotten from a supplement. I agree of course that Protein is top priority, but I do think you should try to work them in when possible. I also am on the pureed stage and have fresh juiced veggies with protein powder, blended soup with veggies with unjury broth powder (21gm pro) mixed in, smoothies with protein powder, I have eaten jars of organic babyfood applesauce/bananas, and SF cheesecake pudding(made w/milk and can also add unflavored protein powder) with pureed strawberries on top. I may have 1 or 2 of those per day and try to eat more solid food, like cottage cheese, refried Beans, or pureed chicken. Even those often have a little veggies mixed in-refried beans mixed with salsa and avocado, chicken with LF mayo, onion, peppers. -
1.rapid loss=runs 2. Only100 pound weightloss ?
onajournee replied to TamaraS's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you find you are very unhappy with your weight still and can't seem to lose anymore you can have the other half of the DS surgery. There are several people in my support group who have had it in 2 steps, My sister had DS and is at goal weight and stays there no matter what she eats. She does of course have some GI issues that go along with that, but she's happy with the trade off. I have over 100lbs to lose and am 3 weeks post op sleeve and am hopefully I will beat the averages and get to goal. My therapist said grazing is the number one reason for regain so you are on the right track getting that in check. Good luck to you and congrats on losing over 100lbs:) -
HELP! Im 13 days post op and maybe taking in too many fluids
onajournee replied to mizz_sleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're doing fine! By 4 days post op i was drinking 64oz of water a day not counting the fluids from my 60gms of protein products-which is the goal my Dr sets for his patients. You're not stretching your stomach and you're one of the fortunate ones that can get enough fluids/protein in the first couple weeks. -
Did anyone get in all of their fluids and protein the first week?
onajournee replied to ChavaBling's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also was able to get all my Protein and liquids in by about day 4 post op. I also used a 5min timer on my phone in the beginning to keep reminding me to drink. It felt like a full time job at times. I tried to drink things that had alot of protein for the amount of liquid, like the premier shakes at 30gm and 8oz cup of unjury chicken broth Soup for 21gms. If you make the soup with milk instead of Water, you have almost 60gms from just that soup and the premier shake. From about 10 days on i could gulp water same as pre op, so that certainly has made drinking easier and quicker. -
I am 2.5 weeks out and haven't lost anything in a week! Even though I know it will happen it is very frustrating to have it happen so soon after surgery. Sort of thought I'd have a month of weight melting off while I was taking in so little.

I am 2 wks post op and i also can now take normal sized gulps of Fluid. And by that i mean the same size swallow of liquid i would take pre op. This actually is a relief to me, i want to feel like i can drink a normal swallow and not baby sip all day long. I have started mushy/pureed foods and my NUT did not set a limit to how much to eat per meal, but said eat slowly, and pay attention to body as to when you are getting full which makes sense. My Dr said there is a certain amount sleeve will relax over many months as it completely heals, but won't stretch beyond that- according to him the stretchiest part of stomach is what's removed. I don't know what difference it can make it you are sipping a couple ounces of water/protein or taking a few larger swallows as long as there's no discomfort, it's all going to the same place:)

I still have soooo many questions
onajournee replied to lcoll's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2 wks post op and take the celebrate capsules 3x a day and i have since post op day 3, along with capsule Biotin, soft gel vit d, and sublingual b12. My Dr said i can take any supplement in pill form, but i see alot of people talking about chewables. Just curious if your Dr's are recommending that for absorbtion reasons or if people just prefer them.
