    Your Surgical Team

Follow ups at one week, then two weeks with our FP, three months, six months, (maybe 9 months), one year and then supposed to be every year for the rest of our lives, though we'll see. They are not covered by insurance so we'll see. It's probably nothing our FP can't do anyway, and if they can't then they can call and ask. ha. If something isn't 'right' then of course I'll go see the surgeon. Our bariatric office has monthly support group meetings and a mentor program as well but last time we went to a support meeting none of the staff showed up. There were 4 of us that showed up for the meeting. I don't know what was up with that. There's a Nutritionist in the office, though not very helpful so far, but we still have one more meeting to go to in two weeks prior to surgery so hopefully we'll get more info then. Haven't talked to the anesthesiologist yet, sometimes they call the night before or see them right before going into surgery. I need him/her to call me the night before though. I need to see if I can take one of my anxiety pills the night before and also if they can come in and give me something to relax as soon as I get gowned up and IV'd. The last surgeries I've had they made me wait an hour or two and for someone who's got an anxiety disorder it's not a good thing. I hate that they just dismiss what I say and not take me seriously. Anyway, this board has been more informative than our Dr's office.

    Getting a medical ID tag

But if they don't look like med bracelets and just look like pretty bracelets will the first responders look over it? Also, what's "lavage/gavage " ? And aren't NSAIDS ok if given by IV?

JULY 2014 Post Op Rny / Bypass Support Group

Ya, strange and they don't sound very knowledgeable. I'm glad you are getting more info on here.

JULY 2014 Post Op Rny / Bypass Support Group

Ugh Did she/he at least tell you how much protein to take in every day?

JULY 2014 Post Op Rny / Bypass Support Group

Hi Everyone! My husband (sleeve) and I (RNY) are scheduled for July 18th. We start our Pre-op diet on July 5th. I'm kind of feeling like we are in over our heads with this. SO much to learn, SO much I don't know. Our 21st wedding anniversary is this Thursday so we are going to pig out at Café Brazil since we won't ever be able to do that again. lol We are not a veggie/fruit eating family (we have 3 kids) so we have quite an adjustment with the foods we will be eating afterwards. My kids may starve. Reality is starting to set in. I'm trying not to think too much about it otherwise I'm asking myself if we are doing the right thing, or maybe we can do this w/o surgery if we could only get enough commitment/dedication/persistence/perserverance. Again. But we all know those answers and the outcomes. I just visited my mom and I'm heading in the same exact health path as her and it's not pretty. She is all for us doing this because she doesn't want us to go through what she is going through. Anyway, I hope we can give each other strength and courage as we each go through, one by one, into our new healthy lives!
  6. I'm hearing a lot of people mentioning mashed potatoes. In phase I and II I'm not allowed to eat mashed potatoes. My NUT said it's a filler and not very nutritious. If I was to eat it I had to eat the proteins first. I sure wish every Dr was on the same page. Would make all of this so much easier.

    My 2 year anniversary

Congrats!!! My surgery is in a few weeks and I just can't imagine myself your size!!! I can't even remember being less than a size 12. LOL (btw- are you at Frank Buck Zoo in your pictures?)
  8. Just curious, why do I read some people have to have an endoscopy and/or colonoscopy for surgery requirements? I mean, they're going in and can see all of your insides anyway. It's not required for my husband and I. Maybe it's an insurance approval prerequisite? That sucks. And here I was fretting over the psych appt. I probably wouldn't be having this surgery if those were required. Sounds silly but when you have an anxiety problem with medical procedures it's not an easy thing to do. I could do an upper barium though. Not a lower. Uh uh. Nope. Lol

    why endoscopy, colonoscopy?

Those with Barretts- did/do you have untreated/unmonitired GERD? What is the actual percentage of it turning into cancer? I'm unfamiliar with this. Had an endiscopy many years ago because of gerd and was scripted Prilisec to take every day, which I already was for years before that. Never mentioned anything about Barretts thank goodness, just a small hiatal hernia. From what I've read only a very small percentage of people have Barretts.
  10. I'm concerned about the amount of protein we are supposed to eat. I've read that woman should eat about 46g of protein per day but our intake is quite a bit higher/double. Over a long period of time isn't this going to be bad for our bodies?

    why endoscopy, colonoscopy?

Thank you! W just got the call that we are approved and July 18th is the date my husband (sleeve) and I (rny) have is surgeries! Let the nerves commence! Lol I told my surgeon that I was told I have a little hiatal hernia that was found from on endoscopy I had many years ago. He wasn't concerned at all. I'm glad. Lol

    Too much protien?

    Great info. Thanks!! :-)

    July Surgery Date

Just got the call, July 18th for my husband and I. Let the nerves commence! We start the two week liver shrinkage diet on July 4th- 2 liquid meals plus one food meal from our Bariatric surgeon's list. Might just have to start the 5th though instead lol

    Best Protein Supplements

This is what we are drinking. We also drink Advantage (I think that's the name....) from Wal-Mart. These two have the best protien, low sugar, low carb low fat combo that I've found so far.

    Texas?

Only one night I'm the hospital?? Lucky. Dr provost told us two nights . But they know how to feed us and what we need so I'm fine with that. Hubby and I will have our own private rooms (that's all they have at presby Denton so I can't wait to complain to the nurses about that man over there who's snoring too loud and keeping me awake, or over here harassing me and making sexual innuendos. Haha!! (All made up of course) He's has only had one laparoscopic abdominal surgery for gallbladder removal in '96. I'm sure he will be in more pain because he's not used to it. Me, on the other hand, emergency csection for our twins, lap surgery for gallbladder10 days later, one other lap surgery and a lap hysterectomy last November. Plus two elbow surgeries and both wrists plus infertility procedures. I can take.another no problem. just have to get up and MOVE. Have never really had a problem with the air bubbles thank goodness.

    PRE-pre-op diet advice?

And I hate going pee all the time Lol
  17. itsmekarenlee

    Texas?

Janifer, how did that work out, with you and your husband same day? How long did you stay at the hospital? How was recovery?
  18. itsmekarenlee

    Texas?

Hiya! My husband (sleeve) and I (rny) have a tentative date of July 14th (waiting on approval) with Dr Provost in Denton.

    July Surgery Date

My husband and I have a tentative date of July 14th as well

    PRE-pre-op diet advice?

How much liquids(ie water, even juice flavored) are we supposed to drink? Bluch :: whine:: oooh!!! Wine is a liquid, sits that count? jk! Obviously I'm going to/have a problem with water consumption. :/ lol

    PRE-pre-op diet advice?

Hi :-) My husband and I are having surgery the same day, he will be sleeved and I will have a rny because if gerd. Tentative date is July 14th. I am doing like you, gradually weaning off of the usual junk I eat, for the same exact reasons you write. In fact, I'm glad you posted to know that I'm not the only one! :-) My husband on the other hand, is not. He did stop drinking soda but that's about it. He says he's eating better but he thinks eating just an apple for lunch is enough. I am concerned that he doesn't know what he's getting into because he's not doing the research. But I just have to work on myself and let him do it his way I guess. Besides, I'm not perfect either and fudge up too. I find that I'm counting down the weeks so I can have this or that "one last time". That isn't healthy either because I think it's binge eating, isn't it? Anyway, it sounds like you're doing great!!!

    Is this correct?

It shows on the bottom of the page it's this year's publishing (2014) however I don't think some of the things are correct, ie: in the 'differences' section where it says the sleeve is done laparoscopically and the bypass is not. Is there anything else not correct on here? http://gastricsleevenow.com/gastric-sleeve-vs-gastric-bypass
  23. I have read so many posts about people getting the sleeve and many having to do a revision to bypass because of GERD. From what I understand and what my surgeon said (I had originally though about getting the sleeve but he quickly recommended a bypass because of my GERD so that's what I'll be getting without a doubt!) if you have GERD before surgery it may not take it away after getting the Sleeve, and it could even be worse after. I just talked to a friend of mine who is wanting a Sleeve and also has GERD but didn't know that. I know there are probably some who had GERD before their Sleeve and now don't but I wonder what the percentage is of those who got the Sleeve with GERD and still had it after, if not worse, and also had to get a revision because of it. And especially why Doctors aren't advising their patients of this. Did your Dr advise you of this too? I just wanted other people to be aware of this in case their Dr didn't tell them

(I'm xposting this in the Sleeve forum as well to get input) If you had GERD before surgery/or pre op did your Dr let you know of this? Did it change your decision?
