  1. Hernias are usually detected through the upper endoscopy. If the doc thinks it will be an issue, they will take it out right away or during the surgery. Some can be resolved over time. I had a hiatal hernia but it was very minor and it went away on its own by the time surgery came around. Good luck.

I DID IT! One day post op

Gas-x works well for the gassy feeling. The pain will get better each day so just hang in there. It's the muscles trying to recover. Good luck and congratulations!
  3. I am 2 months post op from the gastric bypass and have been experiencing some pain in my right shoulder blade.. Could this be a warning sign of a gallbladder problem? I haven't experienced pain under the rib cage that radiates to my back as of yet but I'm a bit worried. Does everyone that has WLS eventually have to get their gallbladder removed?
  4. I had to wait close to two years before having surgery at Stanford bc they needed proper cardiac clearance. In the end, you realize that they are not making you wait bc they like to make you suffer but bc they have to make sure you are well enough to undergo such a drastic surgery. It takes time and all you really can do is be patient and stay determined. Good luck!
  5. This is just the beginning for you so you have to build up that willpower or it will be really hard to be successful and you are going to need to be determined. Luckily, you are on the pre op and I don't know about your particular diet orders but I was able to have two meals replaced by protein shakes and 1 protein packed healthy meal. I usually opted for some scrambled eggs or a salad with grilled chicken. If it's the chewing sensation that you miss, try sf Popsicles. You can do it! Good luck!

Just a Whiny Vent ("My New Insurance")

It's worth the wait. I had to wait 3 long years before finally being able to get surgery at Stanford. Not necessarily due to insurance issues but the first attempt required extensive cardiac clearance which got me an ICD implantation for a bad heart. I had to wait close to a year for my heart to improve and for my cardiologist to clear me for surgery. Just be patient... Everything happens exactly when it is supposed to.

    Surgery Tomorrow

Good luck tomorrow! I remember waking up from surgery and crying bc I was in a lot of pain but the meds will help and it gets better each day. The gas is more irritating than the surgery but it only lasts a few days so that's a good thing. Just take it easy and you will be good.

    2 Week Pre-Op Liquid Diet

I did the pre op diet for 8 days because my surgery date got scheduled pretty quick but it was still a challenge. I consulted with the team at Stanford several times and they said I could have two shakes a day and 1 protein packed meal a day so I'd have scrambled eggs or some grilled chicken salad. Sf Popsicles help a lot too bc it gives you that chewing sensation. I like the premier protein shakes from Costco... The strawberries and cream is delicious hehe. I am almost 5 weeks post op now and still depend on the shakes bc it's so hard to eat and I'm just scared to try new things. I know I have to but it takes time. Dont be too hard on yourself now... Just avoid the junk. You will be fine! Good luck!
  9. Dr. Morton performed my gastric bypass at Stanford a month ago. He is a great surgeon and I appreciate the entire bariatric team there. I never met Dr. Rivas but I did hear about him. I am pretty sure that he is just as good considering that it is Stanford and all the doctors there are highly reputable. I had a bad heart problem and started treatment with Dr Vagelos in cardiology. He was insisting on me needing a transplant eventually but I worked hard enough to get my heart in better shape and up to par for surgery clearance. If it wasn't for Stanford, I don't think I would even be alive now so don't worry... You are in good hands. Guaranteed.
