What do you do when you feel something is stuck?
stanpry replied to send2steph's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was taught never drink to get stuck food down. You do not want to throw up. I have learned what I can and cannot eat. For example red meat. No matter what cut I cannot get it down. I eat hamburger patties but only the one that I make myself. Chicken I must eat as chicken salad with lots of lite mayo. I am a calorie counter and have been very successful watching calories and carbs. You will eventually find out which foods you can tollerate. It will take time. Wishing you success. -
It took 2 years to make my decision. I have no regrets. Lost weight faster than I expected. Had just one fill. No complications. Best decision ever.

I don't understand why anyone would take offense at these comments. I love when people notice that I lost weight. I was heavy my whole life. It's great to see that people notice. I am happy to explain how I did it. Most people that inquire will not do anything for themselves to lose weight. I love how I look and the improvement in my health. Let everyone be jealous.

I also took 2 years to make my final choice and went with the band. I have had only 2 fills. I achieved my goal in 6 months. The decision as to which surgery is up to the individual. Research is the key to the right surgery. If the Dr, does not agree find another Dr. You are the one who has to decide what you can put up with, I eat a low carb diet and keep track of everything that goes into my mouth. I recommend using my fitness pal app on your phone. Maybe I am lucky. I haven't had any complications. I wish you the best of luck and remember this is a lifetime commitment. You will succeed.

Lacking genuine support but hearing horror stories
stanpry replied to Shell88's topic in Rants & Raves
Don't listen to anyone. This is your decision. My children were against my Lap band surgery. I was at the point that I could barely walk. I had lost and gained weight all my life. It took me 2 years to finally make this decision. Best decision ever. No regrets. I lost my weight and it changed my whole outlook on eating properly. -
With all the suggestions I would suggest you cook your own meals. If you cook yourself you know 100% what is in the food you are eating. On line you can find recipes for anything. You can always change the recipe to suit your individual needs. Eating out probably helped in putting on the weight. Time for a change.

HOW many calories?!?!
stanpry replied to JustWatchMe's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In reply to Kindle you had gastric sleeve. Different ball game than lap band. Glad to hear that you can eat what what you want. Most people would have all sorts of trouble trying to eat as you do. Lucky for you. -
How Did You Decide On A Goal Weight?
stanpry replied to eyeononederland's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Forget all these tables. I too am 5'7. My top weight was 243. When I had the surgery I weighed 237. My waist was 44+. I am 159 now. 33-34 waist. According to the charts I am overweight. That is ridiculous. Find a weight that you are comfortable with and go for it. -
HOW many calories?!?!
stanpry replied to JustWatchMe's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I first started to eat solid food I limited myself to 1000 calories a day. No cheating, weigh everything. If I ate a salad in a restaurant vinaigrette dressing on the side. I found that till today I have trouble eating red meat. I don't eat red meat other than a hamburger the I make myself. Stay away from anything that is made with cream clam chowder, bisque, etc. Fish always a good choice. No breading, fried,or oil. Tell the waiter and also to be easy on the salt. As time went on I increased my caloric intake to 1200 then 1500 calories,as long as I was still loosing weight. I have surpassed my goal and eat 2300 calories a day. I still stick with the plan. No pasta bread, rice, cake, candy, Ice cream. I am having no trouble maintaining. You have invested a lot. Is it worth eating anything that will put you back where you started? Hope that my thoughts are worth considering. Best wishes for continued success. -
HOW many calories?!?!
stanpry replied to JustWatchMe's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My wife and I eat out once or twice a week. Before we go I go on line and look up the calorie, fat and carb content of what I will order. This of course limits me to chain restaurants, but I know what I am going to order before I leave the house. -
I had lap band surgery Feb 2014. Lost almost 80 pounds. My wife and I eat out once or twice a week. They key to weight loss in my opinion is what you eat. I have trouble eating red meat. I don't eat red meat. I eat lots of chicken and fish. I was told not to count calories. I count calories. I also use My Fitness pal an app on my phone. Every thing that I eat goes in the app. I weigh every thing. No guessing as to how large a portion I am eating. No bread, pasta, rice, cake, candy, ice cream, etc. You can take a spoon full of anything but remember they are what caused weight gain in the first place. I found that I have lost my taste for sweets so am not tempted. Remember you have invested a lot. The band is a tool. It can be overcome easily. Don't give in for a taste of something you shouldn't eat. After a while you get used to the new way of eating. Best of luck.

How can I convince my husband to consider weight loss surgery?
stanpry replied to steph1281's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There is little you can do. He has to want to lose and be prepared to follow through for the rest of his life. Bariatric surgery is not a magic solution. You have to want to follow the food regiment that is prescribed for you. Bariatric surgery no matter which one can be defeated. You will have to wait for the day that he says I had enough being overweight and want to do something about it. It took me 2 years to make this decision. Just offer encouragement in the mean time. -
What’s a 38 year old girl with a BMI of 36 to do?
stanpry replied to gin765's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Find another surgeon. I had about 60-70 pounds to loose. Had the banding done Feb. 24 2014. Lost 77 lbs in 6 months. I have trouble walking due to medical condition. If I didn't loose the weight I could be house bound. It takes a life time commitment to maintain. You will feel better and have a different outlook after weight lose. Go for it. -

Did your Doctor try Nexium or other PPI meds. Have always had a problem with gastric reflux. I take Pantoprozole once a day and have no problems with Gastric reflux. -
2 month stall - I gotta do better!
stanpry replied to Rena's got this's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am sorry that I was so harsh, I found that when I get hungry for something that I shouldn't have I take a few bites of something that I am not crazy about. For example no fat cottage cheese. That kills my appetite. Find something that works for you. Wish you luck. -
2 month stall - I gotta do better!
stanpry replied to Rena's got this's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
To go through the expense, surgery, and emotions involved how can you cheat? We are all educated in what we can and cannot eat. Go on line and look up recipes. You are allowed almost any food you wish.....but are limited with carbs, and sweets. Bariatric surgery is a tool. Self control is the absolute key. No cheating ever. You will loose the pounds. Again self control. -
I am just about at goal. I use a scale and measuring cup for everything. I was told not to count calories. I don't buy this. I put myself on a 1200 calorie regiment. Fills to match so that I am not hungry. The band will not do all the work for you. You can always eat more if you wait. You have invested a lot to lose weight and it requires work on your part. The weight will come off. Be patient and be very proactive. The choices you make will determine how successful you will be.
