  1. I use Isopure zero carb whey Protein powder, both the vanilla and unflavored brand as recommended by my NUT. I sometimes add frozen strawberries or cocoa to the vanilla powder to add a little flavor. I also use the powder to boost the protein content of yogurt, and will make a shake if I am at risk of not getting in at least 80 grams with natural food. Like par1959, I really prefer to get my protein from regular food.
  2. Without this surgery, I would have gotten even bigger. My blood pressure would be higher and I would have probably developed diabetes. My sleep apnea would have compounded everything. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and hips, so my ability to exercise was minimal. I am also an emotional eater. I could see myself sitting my couch watching TV with a big bowl of popcorn and a magnum full of wine, eating and drinking myself to oblivion, something I did every night. I would have become an alcoholic. I was, and still am a food addict. I would have lost my relationship with my boyfriend and isolated myself even more than I already was.
  3. You are the only one who can determine how much of your personal medical information you will disclose to anyone. As a manager, I am not a big fan of discussing personal medical information in the workplace. I chose to tell my immediate family and did not tell my boss or team anything except that I am having surgery and will be on medical leave for 2 weeks. I understand that you are close to your boss, yet disclosure of this information can be a 2-edged sword. I have had co-workers make comments about "how great I look", but they have stopped short of asking how I did it. I smile, say thank you and keep it moving. If they eventually ask, I won't lie, but I won't discuss it either. It's none of their business.

    Break a platue?

The only thing I could add is to urge you to get more Water in, even if you have to flavor it if pure water is just too pure. I use Crystal Light for mine when I can't stand to drink plain water. Based on your post, it seems like yo may not be getting enough fluids. Most surgeons recommend at least 64oz of non caloric fluids for good health per day, but also to prevent dehydration and constipation. You stated that you increased your Protein, keep in mind that when you do this, you also increase your calories, so logging your food is key to having a good idea of the total calories you are consuming. Baconville suggested ramping up the exercise, I would agree, with weights and cardio. I wish you luck.
  5. I had bypass 4 months ago and would not have considered the sleeve as I had GERD. I chose bypass as I considered it the gold standard for WLS, with the most data on success and complications. The sleeve is now becoming more and more popular and I understand why. It also allows for successful weight loss and is less invasive. I wanted to give myself the best chance of weight loss and maintenance and to relieve my GERD, so RNY was for me. I also liked that fact that RNY gives you both restriction with the pouch and malabsorption with the intestinal bypass. The malabsorption is a benefit, but can also be a problem if you don't take your Vitamins consistently. So, I take my vitamins without fail and do my best to maintain good nutrition. So, far, so good, and I am far from perfect. My surgeon told me that this would be the hardest diet I would ever do. He was right. There are pros and cons to either procedure, hopefully your surgeon will thoroughly go over both procedures so that you can make the best decision for you. One other thing to consider, surgery changes your anatomy, but not your mind, and is a tool for your weight loss journey. I believe that appropriate use of the tool gives you the best change of long term success, regardless of the tool employed. Good luck to you!

    Does anyone have snacks

Since I eat 5 times per day (mini meals), I really don't snack regularly per se. If I wanted a snack, it would be a stick of low fat cheese (Sargento or Baby Bell). Sometimes I have 1/2 cup of frozen kefir. I figure if I'm going to snack on occasion, that it be a relatively low carb, higher Protein snack that is low calorie.
  7. I had gastric bypass 4 months ago and would chose it again in a heartbeat. I had GERD, so RNY was my first choice. By the way, the malabsorption created is, along with the restriction of the stomach pouch, what helps you to lose weight. I don't think of malabsorption as a bad thing. I take my Vitamins religiously and get my Protein and fluids in. The way I see it, if I follow the plan, I will get the results I want. So far, so good.

    African American RNY Sisters

I don't have much hair to begin with, but I am 4 months out and have not noticed any thinning of my hair. I am hoping to prevent or the very least minimize it by keeping up with my Protein and Vitamins.

    Changed my mind

I had RNY 4 months ago tomorrow. I was in the hospital for 1 night, and back to work after 2 weeks. I chose RNY over the sleeve because I have GERD and hypertension. No regrets. I am off hypertension meds and have had no GERD symptoms since. Sounds like you have good resources to educate you about RNY.

    Exercise

Your surgeon will be able to give you a time frame. Remember that you will be having major abdominal surgery, so expect that lifting may be restricted by your surgeon. I will put on exercise restriction for about 4 weeks, including lifting over 40lbs. Good luck to you.

Since my HW was not as high originally posted (it was 232), I have loose skin, but not that much. I am lifting weights, but to build muscle to fill out some of it. Once your skin stretches, it doesn't really snap back. Many people who have lost over 100 lbs have had plastic surgery to deal with the loose skin. Other options are compression garments just to hold you in. There are no creams that will tighten skin once it is stretched.

Sorry, updated my HW, big mistake! it was 232, not 332!

Is it Asthma, or the extra weight?

You would have to discuss that with your doctor. Your asthma may not disappear once you lose weight, and it may or may not improve. Once your doctor puts you on a treatment plan, you should see improvement. Medication is key to managing asthma.

Greetings! I had RNY on 2/17/14, so I am about 4 months out. Coincidentally, I had knee replacement surgery because of long standing osteoarthritis on 3/26/14 and so far am feeling great. HW: 232 SW:225 GW: 150-160 (BMI < 25)
