MelBooks got a reaction from PRINCESSM in Protein while traveling & Disney Dining
    1) If you search on disboards.com, there a loads of people who have traveled after bariatric surgery and have good tips.
    2) allears.net has menus for every restaurant (counter service or not) that can help you plan where some good choices are for you. I think they (and maybe disneyfoodblog.com) have sections on lo-carb and south beach diets that would be helpful as well!
    3) Some ideas off the top of my head for each park:
Animal kingdom: Flame Tree BBQ has a 1/2 chicken meal or chicken salad
Magic Kingdom: Columbia Harbor House has a salmon entree with couscous and broccoli. Also a really good tuna sandwich if you don't eat the bread
Epcot: Tangerine Cafe has a chicken or lamb shwarma plate with hummus that is pretty good. There's a ton of crazy healthy options at the Sunshine Seasons food court
Hollywood Studios: I hate eating in this park, not a ton of options. The sandwiches at the Starring Rolls Cafe are good, if you picked them apart. Read through the menus and see what you can find.
We go fairly often to either Disneyland or WDW, but our next trip isn't until February. I hope you have an awesome time!

MelBooks got a reaction from lore in I was a "super healthy" fat person until surgery changed my life. Was it worth it?
This is so reassuring. I'm in the same boat, super active and "healthy" when I was hugely overweight. 1/2 marathons and triathlons, no problem.
I'm only 6 weeks out of surgery and am down over 50 pounds from when I first walked into my doctors office. I'm not losing very fast post-op, but I honestly don't even care. Running is SO much easier now. Eating so much Protein is making me feel stronger. I am so glad I made this choice now, at a youngish age, so I can enjoy a much more active lifestyle as my kids get older. And I totally feel you on not wanting to be the fat mom!

    Two clothes related ones:
I took 6 HUGE garbage bags of clothes to the local donation center, all far, far too big!
I went to Old Navy because they were having their jeans sale. I had my two kids with me so I didn't feel like trying stuff on, I just grabbed what I thought was my size. Got them home and they were WAY too big! I had to go exchange them for the next size down, and even they seem a little on the big side. I know Old Navy runs large anyway, but I have never in my life had that happen before

Can I ask about your pre/during/post race nutrition. I did a 1/2 5 years ago, and am currently training for another one next February. I'm only up to 5 mile long runs now (right on schedule) but I know based on my last 1/2, I will need some sort of calories around mile 8. What are you using?

I had my first NSV today! I'm just over 3 weeks out (down 47 from the first time I walked into my surgeon's office, and about 15 since surgery). I tried on my wedding band which I haven't been able to wear since I was pregnant with my twins, 6 years ago! I had been wearing a replacement band my DH bought when the kids were born so I didn't have a naked finger but I love the original so much more. It makes me so happy to finally have it on again!

I had a 1:30 check in, and I think didn't go back until close to 3:30. It was fine and I was still released at 8am the next morning.

MelBooks reacted to SnohoGal98296 in It is amazing what just 30lbs can do...
So from the beginning of this path towards and following VSG, one of things on my list that made me make the decision to invest in WLS was when I travelled by air that the meal tray no longer lay flat because my belly would get in the way. Travel is a big part of my job, so this was a constant embarassment for me. There is nothing more embarassing than a flight attendant handing you a meal to a tray that won't lay flat, and at first they just think it isn't fully deployed, then they realize oh no, the tray is stuck on her and the look on their face changes. Total humiliation, right? Not to mention always having to ask for an extension for the seat belt, but at least the flight attendants don't seem phased by that request.
    Well I am happy to share that today I flew for the first time since my surgery (it was exactly four weeks since surgery and 5 weeks since pre-op diet start - I have lost 31lbs since June 1st) when I boarded that flight I dread two things, fastening the seat belt and using the meal tray;
NSV #1 - the seat belt fastened without an extension! it was tight but I was able to fasten it!
NSV #2 - the below attached picture is a shot of the fulley deployed meal tray and my belly - it is a little blurry but the white solid mass is the tray and the black and white flowered area is my t-shirt - there was 2-3 inches between my belly and the tray which lay perfectly flat!!

You know I have been saying that this first month and 30 lbs was just a drop in the bucket, that I would not start to see benefits for another 30-40 lbs( I have 145 lbs excess weight) - but I was wrong - even 30lbs makes a difference!

MelBooks got a reaction from lylabelle in To the filthy liars who say cravings go away
I totally feel you on this! I've been playing with some Paleo "treat" recipes that fit in with most post-op diets. My biggest craving is muffins of all stupid things, and I've found some really good recipes that are egg and coconut flour based. I bake them as mini muffins, keep them in the freezer and use them as a very occasional treat. The other great thing is my kids love them too, so I've put them in their lunches!
Also, a small piece of very high quality dark chocolate (70% or higher) is a very nice treat. It is usually fairly low in sugar and if you let it melt slowly in your mouth, it can last a long time.
My NUT says, and I completely agree, planned treats are an important part of a healthy diet. The key is to pre-plan them and portion them out. And by making smart choices about those treats (my coconut flour banana muffins are virtually identical to ones with white flour but much higher in Protein and Fiber and pretty low in carbs), you can have those planned treats more often.

I like a lot of the tenets of paleo (well, primal because I'm not giving up dairy) and use many of the various paleo blogs for recipes, but I wouldn't say I'm ever going to go totally paleo. I do think that a lot of the recipes fit very well with a post-surgery eating plan.

This might seem a bit weird but I will play candy Crush on my phone sometimes. I take a bite of lunch then play a game. Take a bite, then another game... haha I know we aren't supposed to eat with distractions but who am I kidding. I've never eaten in total silence staring at the walls in my entire life. I come from a huge family and we like to chat while watching our DVR and eating dinner. Over the years I eat slow without even thinking about it. But while you're still learning try things like setting your utensil down between bites and just enjoying the company around you or your TV show.

Consider adding some high intensity interval training into one of your weekly runs. It's basically running a series of intervals but you really focus on short bursts of speed.
    5 minutes warm up
    2 min regular pace
30 sec-1 min very fast (just short of a sprint)
2 min recovery (walk or super slow jog)
And repeat for how ever long you want to run.
