  1. Just the other day, I was working on replacing electrical plugs and switches in my new house. I was on the floor working on a plug and my wife walks in and just stares at me... "What?" I said. "Look at you" she said. "Look at what?", "You--Your sitting cross-leged!" I had not even realized I was sitting that way. I just got tired of squatting and kneeling... Sure is nice seeing other things changing, even though the scale is being stubborn.

Doesn't it feel good! The scale doesn't matter because the NSV's mean more. I am going to Patriots Training Camp on Monday. Can't wait...we make an afternoon of it and get to see our guys up close instead of just on the TV. Can't believe Football season is here already...woohoo! Can't wait!

  2. Hey Sades...

I got to meet CindyG today...she is so sweet and I wish I had more to time to talk with her. She stopped by my store before going to the Cape. We talked about you and that we really want to go see you....next year in our Bikini's. She is very beautiful too! I met her son and Aunt Nora...they had a blast sniffing my candles.

It was so nice to put a face with the name and I really felt like we have known each other for years...I wish we could all meet in person someday. I feel like you are part of the family.

Glad to see the scale moving in the right direction for you. Finally right! Relax this weeked...I can't even believe you went back to work already...

  7. Holly, you have probably just saved my low carb career. :tongue_smilie:

I have had a really hard day. Went to the doctor. Somehow I am losing muscle since starting to exercise. I won't bore you with all the details, but I was even sitting here wondering if I should lay off low carb for awhile. I don't think I am eating enough to support the exercise that I am doing....

Then...I clicked on the recipe link. That Enchilada bake looks wonderful!!!There are sooooo may really good looking recipes on that site.. I will be using it to create my next sopping list. I am going to keep low carbing and just see if I can add a few good carbs to help me continue to burn fat while exrcising!!

    Thanks again!

So sorry to hear about this issue you are having. These recipes are awesome and will give you more calories so that you can compensate the exercise. What kind of exercise do you do?

    Keep your chin up...

  8. You were born the same year as my brother, he just turned 40yo. I loved those bands and as you say the young kids love them now. We had some great bands in Australia as well. Of course INXS who I actually met personally. One of them shared a house with one of my best friends at the time. I worked in the film business for 8 years when I was in my 20s and met some pretty interesting people.

Details on meeting INXS..that was one of my most favorite bands. I was telling the hairdresser today about how I was a punk in high school. I had blue hair, wore a dog collar, loved to slam dance and wore a black trench coat. To todays standards, I would be arrested for just looking weird.

I loved Boy George, Flock of Seagulls, Till Tuesday, Thompson Twins, Billy Idol and to many to mention. The only thing I didn't like for music was Heavy Metal.

    How you feeling today?

    Cindy

  9. Hey guys...hope everyone's day has gone good. I stayed low carb all day and I got batteries for the scale and I am up only about 1/2lb. I was happy about that after the Ice Cream Sundae.

I got a new funky hair cut today to match my 113lb loss. I love it...family can't get used to it. I cut it short because of all the Hair loss. My hair has really thinned out a lot.

    Today's menu:

    B: 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon & 6 sausage links...I was ravished today.

S: 1/2 cup of Mixed Nuts

L: 3 steak tips with peppers, onions & mushrooms and broccoli

S: Sm. DD Ice coffee with cream & 2 splenda

    D: Enchilada Bake

BTW...the Enchilada Bake was so friggin good. I am posting the link...you have got to try this if you like mexican food.< /p>

  10. It sounds like a blast Cindy. Of course I remember Woodstock, I was in high school in 69. Where have all those years gone. :crying: I've been to see a couple of old bands recently as well and I too have loved it. Only local bands that were famous here. Would love to see some of the more famous ones. I was big on live concerts in the 80s. Eurythmics, Culture Club, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Queen to name a few. I also saw Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney, some real blasts from the past! :)

I'm exhausted justing reading this Cindy!  I feel much better than I did the 1st 3 days so I might be doing cheer myself soon! :smile2:

Oh my goodness, Woodstock! I was only 1 year old. However, you got great taste in music because I love all those 80's bands. Don't make music like that anymore. Matter of fact, my boys are loving the 80's..LOL!

    Cindy

  11. Cindy,

Don't worry about a little ice cream. We still gotta live a little! As long as you get back on track, it will only be a little blip on the radar screen. I'm not surprised that your suit got too big already. You're melting faster than that ice cream you ate! By the way, I'm going to Cape Cod on Friday through Monday. Is your shop anywhere near the Cape?

    Cindy...

I am so excited if you get a chance to stop by one of my stores. I am located in Kingston and Middleboro. However, Kingston would be closer. We are off of Route 3, exit 9, left off the exit and up on left 1/4 of mile. I am about 10 minutes north of downtown Plymouth. I will be there over the weekend, both days Saturday (10-5) and Sunday (12-5). My phone number is 781-936-8125 call me with any questions. I would love to meet you if you have time.

By the way, the scales batteries went dead this morning...kind of happy about that then I don't have to see if I gained or not. Tomorrow will come soon enough.

    Cindy

  12. Ok...so something must be working my way today. The scales batteries are dead so I didn't get a chance to weight myself this morning. I am ok with that because I don't really want to see what happened to me after eating the devil carbs.

Someone was asking about recipes. I have another awesome website for low carb recipes...

  13. Having the band in place gives you some restriction. "Just having the band in place" does not cause you to lose weight. You could eat all the wrong things and gain weight with the band in place.

Some people do not feel alot of restriction and want a fill soon after being banded. Before my first fill, I was lucky and felt some restriction. I was able to eat small amounts (about 1 - 1/2 cups), I was not hungry between meals, and I was losing weight.

Eventually I started getting more hungry between meals. When I got my first fill I felt more restricted. I could eat about 3/4 - 1 cup of food at a time.

I am at a point now, that I need a fill. I am hungry between meals and find myself eating more and not really losing.

Sugar Bean...where did you get the I lost 75lbs Star...I would like to get one for losing 100lbs.

    Thanks,

    Cindy

  14. Ok...so I suck today. I stayed on plan all day through dinner and everything and then bam....I gave into a craving that I have been having all summer. I ate an ice cream sundae tonight...not just an ordinary sundae but a gushy, choc. cake, vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whip cream, nuts and cherries and a large portion. I was sick after eating it. I know that it will take me about week to lose what I will gain from this little indulgence.

    B: 2 eggs & 4 slices of bacon

S: DD Ice coffee, cream & Splenda

L: Celery Stix and Blue cheese Veggie Dip

S: 2 oz. Dry Roasted Mixed Nuts

D: Steak Tips with pepper, mushroom & onion and mashed cauliflower

S: The Ice Cream Sundae from Hell!

Everyone else is doing marvelous. Great job for staying on track.

    Cindy

  15. Hey, Cindy!

Anyway you could paste your face onto the cheerleader avatar? If not, go put on a cheerleader outfit and take a photo! Your new bathing suit and a set of pom poms should work!

Too Funny! The bathing suit that I just got is getting to big for me. I just bought another one...I'll have to take a picture in that one....Ha Ha...but I am going to wait...I ate a Ice Cream Sundae tonight and I feel so gross...it will take me all week to probably lose all the weight I am going to gain by eating it..I haven't had that many carbs since July 4th!

Shout out to my girl Sades! Sounds like your spirits are up today! Yeah! You go girl!

Give me an S...Give me an A....Give me a D....give an E....Give me an S.

What does it spell Sades, Sades, Sades...Go Sades.

  19. Hi Everyone,

I miss you all - have been very busy at work and at home. Things with me are good though- I have good restriction, am not too hungry too often, am enjoying eating a lot of vegetables though getting my Protein in is a bit challenging. Moving away from a life dominated by food has also brought emotional and spiritual growth, and I'm grateful for that. My thoughts are with Sades and Shortgal - two brave, strong women, there. I hope to be able to be on line and in touch more regularly soon. All the best,

    Bandpal

p.s. I almost forgot - I weighed in at 197.89 this morning, so I've made it to Onederland!

Dude! That is an an awesome accomplishment. You should be proud of yourself. How is your wife doing? Glad to hear things are going well for you. Miss you perspectives don't be a stranger..

    Cindy

  20. I seriously HATE that time of the month! Grrrr! The stupid scale is going in the wrong direction. Up another half pound this morning. I know for a fact it is not my food. I have been so dedicated. Yesterday my totals were 1041 calories, 17g carbs, 87g Protein. That is typical of what I have ate every day for the last week. Plus I have been exercising quite a bit. Sorry... I just needed to vent. I'm mad!!

You have the double whammy...TOM and Exercise...when did you start exercising? I know when I first started about 8 weeks ago that the scale yo yo'd up and down for about the first month it wasn't until a few weeks ago the scale started to move...

Don't get discouraged...you will have a woosh this week I am sure. Not a problem with venting...we all need it now and then.

    Keep up the great work!

    Cindy

  21. Great info Holly! May have something to do with my ketosis or lack thereof or maybe not, we shall see. Now, this laxative effect thing. Might be worth my inhaling the whole darn box of Atkins indulge if it'll get things moving, because this dang Miralax is for the birds! Well, not exactly. Birds don't seem to have a problem in that department. One pooped on my arm the other day at the Water park as I was floating along in the lazy river!

    Too Funny!

  22. Hi Guys!

I know that there was some discussion on the effect that sugar alcohols have on eating low carb. This was an interesting find:

    idea2.gifSugar Alcohols

    by Doreen

ALL ABOUT SUGAR ALCOHOLS (MALTITOL, SORBITOL, ISOMALT , etc..) These sweeteners are neither sugars, nor alcohols, but they are carbohydrates nonetheless. They are sometimes called POLYOLS, to avoid confusion. At the present time, they have not been legally classified for product labelling purposes, as are sugars, starch and Fiber. So, some manufacturers are choosing to omit them from the total carb count in the nutrient data panel of the label (they MUST however declare the amount of sugar alcohol in the ingredient list). Because they aren't actually SUGAR, products that contain them may use the term "sugar free" on the label. Some manufacturers and distributors (esp. in Canada and Europe) are choosing to declare the full carbs in the nutrient data panel, and some diabetes associations and consumer groups are pressuring for gov't legislation to make this a legal requirement.

There are some claims that sugar alcohols don't have carbs, and therefore don't count; that they can be completely subtracted if listed on the label. This statement is not entirely "false" but it is misleading. Sugar alcohols do have carbs, and approx. 1/2 to 3/4 the calories of regular sugar. They are more slowly and incompletely absorbed from the small intestine than sugar, thus producing a much smaller and slower rise in blood sugar ... and consequently insulin. But this is a YMMV thing. Some Type 1 diabetics have reported that they sense an immediate "sugar rush" from eating even a small amount. Others notice no change, and absolutely no effect on ketosis.

Sugar alcohols do have carb calories, and the body will use these as fuel, or store as fat, whether or not insulin is involved. You need to look at the total CALORIES for one serving of the product. Subtract from this total the number of calories from any Protein in the product (prot = 4 cal. per gm), then subtract the calories from any FAT in the product (fat = 9 cal. per gm). What's left is the calories from carbohydrate ... divide this remainder by 4 (carbs = 4 cal. per gm). If the number you get is bigger than the number of carbs declared on the label, the product has hidden carbs, and it's most likely the polyol. Calories do not just disappear into thin air!

The "laxative effect" happens for two reasons. First, because the sugar alcohols are not completely absorbed, they hold on to a lot of Water in the bowel. This causes diarrhea. Another consequence is that when undigested carbs reach the colon, the normal bacteria present there go WILD --- resulting in unpleasant gas, and bloating. Sorbitol and mannitol are the worst offenders in this department, maltitol less so. The effect is dose-related -- you would be wise to pay attention to the serving size listed on the product label. This amount would be considered "safe" for the average adult -- make note of this before giving to a smaller child! Nothing like watching your kid doubled over with cramps and diarrhea because they ate too many "sugar free" sweets. To the best of my knowledge, sugar alcohols ARE safe for children, and pregnant/nursing mothers ... just keep an eye on the dose.

There are some newer sugar alcohols slowly making their way on the market, which have less laxative effect, and even less blood sugar and insulin consequence. Erythritol, isomalt and inulin are a few to watch for. There's another called HSH (hydrolyzed starch hydrolysate) also called maltitol Syrup. The thing is, the different sugar alcohols have different properties, and can't be used for all things. Sorbitol is used in hard candies ... it produces a nice, clear candy that doesn't crystalize, and stays hard and dry in a humid environment. Because it doesn't crystalize, sorbitol is used in ice cream to help it stay creamy. Mannitol also can absorb a lot of moisture before it gets damp and sticky, therefore it's used to "dust" sticks of gum, to keep them dry. Maltitol and erythritol provide smooth bulk, and are ideal for chocolates and soft candies to give a creamy "melt in the mouth" quality.

Sugar alcohols are not acted upon by bacteria in the mouth, and therefore do NOT cause tooth decay. In fact, xylitol actually INHIBITS oral bacteria, and is often used in sugarless mints and chewing gum for this reason.

    BOTTOM LINE

We are all individuals, and our bodies will react differently to these products. Depending on other factors, such as what else we've consumed along with it or on an empty stomach, we may even find ourselves having totally different reactions each time we eat it. So proceed with caution.

Be aware that there is potential to cause a rise in blood sugar and insulin ... although slower. Also the possibility to knock you out of ketosis, if you're following a ketogenic program such as Atkins. Pay attention to the serving SIZE. A 45-gram (1-1/2 oz) chocolate bar may state on the label that one serving is 15 grams (1/2 oz). That's only 1/3 of the bar, so keep that in mind when you're about to chow down.

If you are following Induction level low carb eating, it would be wise to avoid these products until at LEAST the 2 weeks are up, and your body's metabolism is settled well into ketosis and fat-burning mode. Same for other low carb programs, which may not be ketogenic, but do have strong effects on the metabolism (eg. Protein Power, Carb Addicts). Give your body the chance to adjust to the new WOE first, then cautiously add these products.

KEYWORD moderation. Most low carbers find they can indulge very occasionally in a polyol-sweetened treat without consequence to their weight loss effort, and perhaps a mild laxative effect or some gas. It's a trade-off, but helps to stave off cravings for high-sugar goodies. A problem could develop though, for someone with carb-addiction .... these candies just become a substitute addiction. Also, the sweet taste can trigger EMOTIONS (for an addict) that will result in a "rush" of hormones and enzymes in the body, ultimately leading to an insulin spike ... and fat STORAGE. And remember that candy is NOT a meal substitute. There's little or no protein, Vitamins or essential fatty acids.
