    Worried

Oh I know exactly what you're saying. My mom is in the same boat, and loses more mobility each day. She has rheumatoid arthritis and is morbidly obese. She has started to even use a cane inside the house to get from her chair to the bathroom. There's no discussion allowed. She gets furious and lashes out if I even ask what her regular doctor has recently said. (Like what's the plan for her feet that turn purple from time to time?) My mom won't let anyone, even me, help her out of a chair when we go to church or to a restaurant. She snaps at me to leave her be and struggles to get up. More than once she has fallen on the way to the car or on her driveway, and once I had to enlist two passersby to help me get her back up on her feet on the sidewalk. I cannot lift her. Now she uses a walker all the time. I'm the only person who can take care of her when it comes time for total care. This is already hard, and I can't imagine how it's going to be then. She would never, ever have WLS. She won't even have her second knee replaced, which is why she can't walk. All we can hope is that our loved ones have a change of heart and decide to reach for a better life.

    Banders #6

Had a great Mother's Day with my older daughter. A planned picnic got rained out, so we ended up at a Chinese restaurant that my mom picked. It was great. My daughter and I also took a walk in a park that was loaded with blooming lilacs and tulips. Waiting eagerly for my younger daughter to return from Spain this week. I haven't seen her since January.

One is home, one to go! Moved my daughter home from college today. Lots of stairs and carrying boxes. And driving. I'm pooped. But never out of breath like the old days. Relaxing now while she unpacks. I ended up with 1927 calories today after we had lunch at a Mexican cantina and I had the chips and fried burritos. That one meal was 1522 calories. Yikes! Imagine if I had added a margarita (I didn't). Tomorrow she and I will have a picnic lunch in a local park renowned for its lilac bushes which are gloriously in bloom this week. Hope we don't get rained out. Church early with my mom, then a CODA meeting, then the picnic. Have a great day everyone!

    Your weirdest breakfast?

As a bander, I eat some of the oddest foods for Breakfast. This last month, I've had seafood salad, meatballs, and right now a bowl of chili. It doesn't bother me, it just amuses me. What's the weirdest breakfast you've eaten since WLS?

Ten pounds! Congratulations !!! Good luck with the bike ride. I pick up my eldest daughter tomorrow from St. Louis. 9 hours driving total. Lots of stairs, carrying boxes. So much easier without 100 extra pounds on me. Youngest daughter comes home next Thursday from Spain. Can't wait! Today my food is bacon and yogurt for Breakfast, a salad for lunch, and meatballs for dinner. Going to the gym to learn how to use an elliptical machine today. Then maybe a movie (no crapcorn) and an early bedtime to hit the road by six am. If I don't check in before Sunday, happy Mother's Day to all!

First day with a personal trainer

Wow, what a difference it makes working out with somebody guiding you. I'm sore, but so happy I decided to do this. Today was my first of thirteen sessions with a personal trainer at the gym I joined. I'm on my way!

Just checking in after the personal trainer session. I'm so glad I did this! Sore but happy. I'll see him twice a week for six weeks and I'll go to the gym on my own on weekdays in between. Woo hoo!

    I've hit a bit of a wall...

I did recently add walking stairs at work, and giving up a few food and drink indulgences that were doing me no favors.

    I've hit a bit of a wall...

I hear you! I've been at a standstill for months. But today I joined a gym and tomorrow I start my first day with a personal trainer. I just wasn't ready to exercise until now. The veterans here swear that exercise makes the difference, and once it becomes a routine, it even becomes enjoyable. I decided it was time. I want to get to goal weight and I'm fifty pounds away from that.

Well, I joined a gym and start with a personal trainer tomorrow. I'm so darned excited I can't stand it. Today was a great day. I went to a local restaurant alone for dinner and ordered perch. Leaving food on my plate wasn't even hard. I think I might finally be getting the hang of listening to my band.

    Gyms - your opinions

Hi. I've postponed an exercise program as long as I could. I know that to lose some more and get fit I need to take the next step. And now I want to. I'm a 54 year old female with arthritis in my knees, so jogging won't work. I do enjoy walking but what I'd really like to do is get toned and fit. I know that this loose skin won't go away, but before I consider a TT next year I'd like to strengthen my muscles as much as possible. I've lost 100 pounds and want to lose 50 more. But more than the weight, I want to get muscle definition and tone. I'd be content losing just another 30 if I was fit and lean. Years ago I was able to commit to an exercise routine (jogging) by going to the YMCA right from work. I ran the track for three miles. I can't do that anymore. My knees can't take it. I tried. But I'd like to start training (is it called strength training?) on machines, etc. to strengthen my arms and legs and stomach area. I recently saw a picture of a young bodybuilder I know. She's just a kid, but she transformed herself from a plump teenager into a whole different person. I know that's not achievable for me, but somehow seeing a person I know completely change her body gave me hope for "some" change. For those of you who started the exercise thing at an older age like me, what gym did you like and why? Do most of them have trainers to help you? I know many folks have success with home videos etc., but if I don't get my butt physically to a gym every day right after work, I just won't do it. What are the pros and cons of the different big chains? Cost is a factor but I can budget a reasonable amount. Thank you for your input. (Be kind.)

    30 days to band

It will be here before you know it! Try to make some habit changes now if you can. It will lessen your nervousness and make the post op period an easier transition. Examples are walking, no drinking with meals, chewing slowly, etc. How exciting! Best of luck to you!

Doing well here. Food was clean yesterday. Only got 2/3 of my stairs in. Looking into gyms. I want the scale to move and it ain't gonna happen without working out. I have a CODA meeting tonight so that will be affirming. Breakfast was bacon, lunch will be chicken strips, dinner uncertain. Maybe fish.

    The lady at the pool

Possibly. That's a good idea. Now if the suggestion can just come from somebody other than me so she doesn't bite my head off, that would be great.

    The lady at the pool

It's a vicious circle. My mom is unable to exercise and can barely walk. Water is the only place she can move well, due to her size and rheumatoid arthritis. But she's so self conscious about getting in and out of the water that she won't go to a pool. Forget the beach. She's unsure of her footing on sand, so that became a thing of the past a decade ago. Her life has become narrower and narrower. It saddens me but there's nothing anyone else can do.
