  1. My trick pretty much is to finish my meal with a few bites of salad, and that usually helps to take the thirst away. I have no problem with not drinking during meals, but after I finish sometimes it would be nice to have a diet coke hahaha, in my dreams But really, once you get used to it it's not that bad at all!

    The Last Straw

I am almost 3 months out and I had no dumping whatsoever and I can tolerate every food, even sugar unfortunately. I almost wish I had dumping coz now I have to rely on myself not to eat unhealthy. But thank god I do not crave sweets, and this is a big change compared to my before surgery cravings, I used to eat chocolate daily, and now I haven't had any since surgery. Bowels are fine, I get gassy pretty much from the same foods I did before the surgery. (beans, milk ect) so I try to avoid these.

    Head Hunger driving me insane

But you need to know that after your surgery it is much easier to control your head hunger. Right now it is a roaring lion for you, and after your surgery it will be a little mouse back in your head telling you to eat. You look at food, and you want to dive into it, and then you realize 'hey wait, I had RNY, I won't be able to eat this stuff even if I try', and then you move on. About the liver shrinking diet: I did not have to do any diet whatsoever before my surgery. Not even for a day. So my liver was not important??? I don't think so. I think they just make you do this diet so you learn to say no to food. I find it really cruel, coz this is what we had to fight until this point and we lost the battle, so what makes them think we can do it now? we can not say NO to food and that is why we got fat! (Ok not all of us, but 99% for sure) Are you required to lose weight with your liver shrinking diet? I think all you can do is just hang on for dear life and do the best you can. Nobody is expecting you to do perfect, but since you have to do this darn diet, just try...Best of luck to you!

    Non scale bucket list!

I just wanna walk across the beach feeling comfortable in my skin and my bathing suit. And I want to be able to run again, like if I have to catch the bus and I do not have to pretend like it's not a big deal I'll just wait for the next one... I wanna be able to sit in low seats and not to struggle to stand up - oh how I hate those low sofas without arm support, you are just stuck once you sit down you are down unless somebody pulls you up! Or how great it would be just sit on the curbside???

what foods YOU cannot eat anymore?

I am one of the lucky ones who can tolerate just about anything, no dumping at all, but have I got discomfort after even a few bites? Trust me, it's not just what you can not tolerate but the whole experience of not being able to eat more then a few bites is shocking! I am happy as I am losing weight but I miss food. Eating now is a chore, a problem, something I am not looking forward to do.

What is the #1 food you'll miss?

I already had my surgery and I can tell you that I do not miss a thing, because I can eat anything I want. I tolerate every food, so if I want pizza then I will have pizza - about 3 bites of it. That's all I can have. Eating is not much fun anymore. I do not like sweets any longer and I used to be addicted to sugar. I could not live without fruits, but even before surgery I used to eat lots of fruits.

    How about some NSVs!?!?

From size 22/24 (UK) I am down to size 18 UK, that is size 16 US. It feels amazing. My feet are not hurting at the end of my 12 hour shift. Yes, I am tired but I recover in an hour - before surgery I was close to quit my job as it put me in such misery, I was not able to recover in between shifts and my feet were constantly hurting. I never went out coz other then work all I wanted to do is rest my feet, so I always cancelled on all my friends with various excuses (was ashamed to tell them the real reason). This freedom of mobility is huge for me. I can go up the stairs without feeling like I am going to pass out. I can walk long distances, I can walk uphill without needing to stop and catch my breath. This is the real reward for me, feeling how I'm getting lighter and how life gets easier. Sometimes I look at my 120 pounds co-workers and I wonder how easy their life must be. I wear trainers at work, I carefully choose them, with ortho insoles, and they wear some little canvas shoes that has no support, without any issues. I will get there soon! However, I have a confession to make. As much as I love losing weight I am also very sad to see a few of my clothing to go. I spent lots of time finding them and lots of money buying them, and I have quite a few pieces that I really really like. So this makes me a bit sad. Most likely I will not have much money to replace them so I will have to be satisfied with some budget solution such as second hand ect.

    Prayer Needed~Newbie RNY~Dialation

Chin up tebowfan! Try to push liquid today so they will have an easier time to find your veins and successfully start an IV! Very important for you right now to drink as much as you can. No excuse, ok? Do not worry about the dilation, for most patients they often need to even repeat the procedure so I doubt they will make it too big...

Im sure there is a thread out there but....

I do not think I will be popular with this, but :eat. Please eat your fav meals one last time and enjoy every bite of it. Most likely you will be able to eat them even after your surgery, but somehow nothing tastes the same. Eating lost it's magic. It is rather a struggle now. Losing weight is amazing, fantastic, but oh my how I miss food... Good luck to you on your journey!

    The dreaded stall -_-

I am 7 weeks out and I haven't had any stalls. My surgeon started me on solids on day 10, so I did not have the initial big weight drop I see with people whos are on liquid diet 2 weeks pre-op (I had no pre-op diet), and 2-3-4 weeks after the surgery. So my weight loss was not drastic and it is still on the slower side but I am happy as I am losing constantly. I think lots of people stall when they transition from liquid to pureed and then from pureed to solids. Not much you can do, follow your plan, and it will come off.

2 days post op with hunger

That's great news! You did RNY? That makes me hopeful. Also, I woke up this morning and didn't feel hungry like I did going to bed last night. I'm down 12 pounds since my surgery three days ago! I'm sure it's mostly Water weight, but still it's nice to see the scale moving. Keeps me motivated! Yes, sit tight, it will be all good. First weeks are the hardest. Congrats on your weight loss! oh and yes, I had RNY. Loads of us feels the hunger, and I do not talk about head hunger, but it is actual painful hunger. If you feel hunger drink first. Then wait half an hour and if you are still hungry then eat. (I don't know when will you start pureed stage, I was lucky and my doctor progressed me fast, on day 5 I was on pureed, day 10 solids, and thank god for that!)

2 days post op with hunger

My hunger was back full force on day 5. Things will get better once you are on pureed, and especially when you start solids. Also, I hadf no feeling of fullness til 5 weeks out. On the 6th week I suddenly got incredible restriction. Its amazing!

What do you ladies recommend ?

I dunno how people can shower?? We have been told not to, coz we had stitches and drains. There is a high risk of infection plus warm water will soften your wounds and they can easily open up. I would not recommend a shower. You can however shower downstairs I did that too, and sponge bath on the top. In exchange I am 7 weeks out and my incisions are beautifully healed. Do not forget to take one extra pair of slippers with you that can be used in the shower. You do not want to go home with fungus. Other than that I took my own everything, at least 1 nightgown for each day.
  16. @@ladykatie_ please do not be jealous, it's not all fun and games trust me. For 5 weeks I had no restriction and because I feel hungry in every 3 hours I was eating more then what I should have. I only started to feel the restriction about 2 weeks ago, and now I am able to DIET, yes I have to diet, watch what I eat and count calories coz I could eat more then what I actually do. It's hard work, the only thing that changed is less food fills me up, my hunger is not as bad as before surgery and my digestion is different now. Sometimes I wish I would feel disgusted when I look at food but I still love to eat and enjoy my meal, so it makes it that much harder to actually lose weight. It is going to be a hell of a ride
  17. JMAW, every body's experience is different. It is impossible to know what and how are you going to tolerate food or even water after your surgery. But you should know that there are loads of us who breezed through this, I am 6 weeks out and I can drink the same way I did before my bypass. I can eat what ever I want, I have no dumping and I tolerate every food - it is only the portion size that changed dramatically! So cheer up, do not worry, all will be fine. (I must add I did not have the lap-band)

    Complications

Hi Liz. I am very sad to hear you are having difficulties. I wish your health could improve without the reversal - as it is a very complicated surgery and only a few doctors care to do it. There is a lady on this forum who went through the "takedown", you should reach out to her. Here is the link to the board: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/273799-reversal/ Also here is an other site about reversals, with a few doctors whos are performing them. https://gastricbypass.netfirms.com/reversal.htm I wish you the best of luck and please keep us updated!

    Why am I hungry?

I know exactly how you feel. I was super hungry on the 5th day after my surgery, thank God I was allowed to start pureed food on that day. Trust me, it was not head hunger. I was on the pureed stage for 5 days, and 10 days after my surgery I could start to eat solid food, well chewed of course. I know, for some of you this is strange but my surgeon does it this way and I was gladly fallowing his advise.lol With solid foods you will feel more restriction. However I still get hungry in every 3 hours, so I do not have to be reminded to eat - my tummy does make me remember. Usually a few bites of food satisfies my hunger. Also, when I get my first hunger wave, I drink some water, that usually helps for at least 20-30 minutes. I have to log my food to make sure I do not go over my calorie limit. Honestly, I could eat more... I thought after the surgery my hunger will be gone, but apparently this is not the case. However, my hunger is manageable now and I can stick to a diet. It is still hard work to be honest, and you have to make wise choices day after day. Good luck to you!
  23. Hi MimIN, glad you are doing great! Everything will be fine, no need to worry, you need to heal first. I am six weeks out and my sense of fullness is getting better but I had the same exact problem that you are having, I never felt full. It is tough. I still could eat way more then what I actually eat...but with solids the restriction gets much much better, I promise! Also as @@DLCoggin wrote it earlier in a post : "Measure and/or weigh everything you eat or drink. Especially important during the weeks following surgery when the nerves in your pouch that serve as "stretch sensors" are healing and temporarily ineffective." Here is the link http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/306088-expanding-your-pouch/#entry3482569 Best to you!

    Can I take Benadryl?

Me too, allergic reaction, small itchy bumps on neck, took Benadryl Children Liquid. Honestly, did not help much but was better than nothing. Strange, before my bypass it worked just fine...
  25. Hi Cindy! Honestly, I always wanted the sleeve, because it is less invasive, no malabsorption and with cutting out over 80% of the stomach they get rid of the ghrelin, so no hunger after surgery. I really liked that. I did not like the bypass, the re-routing, malabsorption, Vitamins for life, and to my horror I was reading a topic about your gas and poo being extra super smelly after bypass, so I thought no way!!!!!!!!!!!! Turned out I had GERD, so guess what??? I got the bypass! I have learned a lot since my surgery, like 50% of the bypass patients will not develop any Vitamin deficiency, and success rate is higher with bypass. Turns out I can use the malabsorption part of the surgery because I can eat everything, I have no dumping and I get hungry every 3-4 hours, so the extra help comes handy . Honestly, I feel great. I am losing rather slow, but it is steady. I tolerate everything and I am in good spirits. Oh about the gas and poo: before the surgery I told my best friend about what I read, that it is going to smell really bad, and she looked at me like I lost my mind, and she asked me "But tell me, whos gas and poo smells good?? What difference does it really makes?" Turns out the smell is just as bad as it was before the bypass Now, that I had a successful bypass surgery I would not change it for anything, but I think the sleeve is a great tool also. It is a very personal decision, but you have to listen to your doctor and have to be careful about the decision. Good luck to you!
