Help! Please could someone give me advise
esskay77 replied to amysmara's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Drink plenty of fluids of course. If you have to take something, you can take some liquid Tylenol but I don't really think that helps a cold much. Sometimes it just has to run its course. -
Looks like I will be paying for this myself
esskay77 replied to harmony5001's topic in Insurance & Financing
I don't know how much surgery costs but would you be able to buy a different insurance that covers it? Seems like buying insurance might be cheaper than paying for the surgery? Not sure but it is an option. I don't know if you have insurance through work or a spouse or if you buy your own but you could start buying your own and drop the other? Not sure if you can have 2 insurance plans or not--another thing to look into. Or take out a loan? I don't know if there are other options. You could ask your surgeon what they recommend. -
Congrats! You are awesome!

I had joined gyms in the past but really didn't know what to do. This time, the gym recommended their personal trainers--with the new membership you get a few free sessions. This really helped me to figure out what to do at the gym and made such a difference. They created a card for me with the different exercises to do and how many reps to do and it is kept in their card file that I can access anytime. I haven't even looked at it in a couple of years now! But I also walk/run outside, do zumba, treadmill, and I have some home equipment that I like to use: jump rope, hula hoop, kettle bell, bands, etc. Frankly, I have the best luck with just being outside walking/hiking that sort of thing. I keep meaning to do some bike riding but that still scares me and frankly, I haven't really ridden a bike since they required helmets so not sure how I feel about that. Find something you love to do--dance class? karate? anything! Best of luck.

@@catwoman7 yeah, fruits and veggies and dairy are all good carbs. I just don't consider the carbs even though they are. I mean crackers, pasta, bread, rice, that sort of thing is what I stay away from. I do have fruit but try to keep it limited, unless there is something really good in season!!

@@muncheechee WHen you say you are having/craving carbs -- which ones. What are you eating and craving? Maybe there are substitutes? I was told to not have any during the weight loss phase, though I had gastric bypass so your mileage may be different. Even now, I'm not super strict but I do my best to keep as low carb as possible. Almost no carb, depending on the day. THe problem of course is that carbs bring on cravings for me. I have not had pasta since surgery but I have had multi-grain bread though I am going to switch over to Ezekiel bread again. The carbs and the sugar will definitely stop you from losing weight and will put all your weight back on. You have a choice. Gain it all back or follow the program and lose weight. The decision is simple, the follow- through is tough. But you should give it a try. And take it one day at a time.

Tried cottage cheese for the first time - help me jazz it up
esskay77 replied to trekker954's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
@@Dub I JUST tried Spicy Thai Chil tuna for the first time. I didn't find it hot but my palette has gotten used to very spicy and I don't always notice it. I had always had a real hatred for Cottage cheese but for some reason I love it with the sugar free Jello and cool whip. It doesn't taste anything like cottage cheese. I still don't like it plain. It never occurred to me to make it more savory with spices. I'll have to look into that. -
It's not a stupid question and one that I have always wondered about, too. Thanks for asking!

esskay77 replied to trekker954's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I add a package of the powder of Jello into it and a little sugar free cool whip and pineapple if you can have it. Or, add the Fat free, sugar free cheesecake flavored jello pudding and some sf coolwhip (and crushed pineapple if you can have fruit). Sometimes you have to add a couple tablespoons of skim milk to it. Mmmmm. -
I'm 2 1/2 years out and my stomach still gurgles. lol. Not as bad as the first year but it still does do it.

I don't know how Im gonna make it thru the rest of this liquid diet.
esskay77 replied to Crystal Ann Keister's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I agree with the others. -- unjury chicken soup -- regular fat free chicken stock -- sugar free Jello -- sugar free popsicles -- tomato soup -- V8 -- tomato juice -- Crystal light -- herbal tea These are the types of things that save you!! And I do remember how hard it was and how I just wanted food but now I would love to go back to that stage and just really enjoy the moments! I know that sounds weird but... -
Make my self throw up?
esskay77 replied to curlysue86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've done it twice. It's totally last resort, not recommended, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I know someone who had food "stuck" and they were told to take a quick swig of soda and the carbonation will bring it back up. Apparently it worked but, again, not highly recommended on several levels. Use at your own risk. -
Such a naive question even though I am 2 years out. Are olives OK to eat for RNY people? What are they considered? Veggie? fruit? Carb? I have discovered jalapeno stuffed olives and I have been eating them but then wasn't sure if it was ok. Thoughts? TIA
-
Thanks!! Phew! I'll just try not to eat so many of them--lol.

Getting over the guilt
esskay77 replied to KaiserKid's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@KristenLe I don't think there is one associated with the place I went to. I had originally started out with Beth Israel and they did have the whole team working together but I left that program and went over to St. Elizabeth's in Brighton. Better but not a full program. They have the surgeon and NUT in the same place but the NUT's they have had are kind of useless in my opinion. I did have to be evaluated by the psychiatrist before surgery but I don't think he is really part of the program other than eval. I will call the and ask if they can recommend someone but I seem to recall that I may have in the past but don't remember why they didn't pass along any names/reco's. Yes, I am in Boston! -
Getting over the guilt
esskay77 replied to KaiserKid's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
What type of therapist works with food issues? How do you find one that deals specifically with these? If anyone knows a good one in Boston, I would love to hear about it. -
Still stalled - and hungry. Where's the magic weight loss i was promised?
esskay77 replied to Seastars's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@Seastars Holy crap! Your doctor offered you appetite suppressants??!!?? I'm blown away. Your hunger will ebb and flow. It will go away for a while and then creep back in. For some people, it stays away, for others, not so much. But I have never heard of a doctor offering up pills. Or am I naive? Does this happen but nobody talks about? -
Getting over the guilt
esskay77 replied to KaiserKid's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't feel guilt. Well, sometimes I feel guilty when I eat the wrong thing but I don't feel guilt over my weight. What did I do? I had surgery! I also go to a support group for food addiction. I hope to find a therapist at some point. You need to take control of your life. Stop thinking about the past, think about the present and the future. What can you do differently today and tomorrow. Take a nutrition class, take a cooking class, do some research on eating properly. One of my friends teaches a cooking class and I am hoping to reach out to her for some help. She has a great YouTube following (Helen's Kitchen). It's a struggle, it will always be a struggle but you need to arm yourself with information and education. That's a big first step. Best of luck!! -
Oranges 1 month pre-op

Much too soon for oranges. Too acidic for sure. Eventually you can have them but not yet. -
Need to do a Costco run - Whats on your Costco Shopping list?
esskay77 replied to trekker954's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I should also say that I had the gastric bypass--I hadn't noticed that you were sleeved so my list may be different from yours. Sorry for not paying attention! -
Need to do a Costco run - Whats on your Costco Shopping list?
esskay77 replied to trekker954's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I don't go to costco but some of the things that I rely on still are: eggs (and more eggs!), cottage cheese, ground turkey, chicken breasts or sometimes a whole chicken, cans of tuna fish though not all the time, frozen shrimp, Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt (the cherry flavor is AWESOME!!) but Lemon Meringue is good too, Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt (in black container, this is the one that all the NUTs are now recommending) in strawberry and mixed berry, string cheese and the wedges of Laughing Cow cheese, and then some veggies (green and red peppers, onions, radishes, etc), various flavors of Crystal Light, cans of diced tomatoes, cans of black Beans and kidney beans. But please note that I am 2.5 years out! I think that you can use some of this list if you are new (the eggs, yogurts, cottage cheese, things like that). I also always have a large container of Plain, Nonfat greek yogurt in the fridge and use it in lieu of sour cream, sometimes have it with fresh fruit on it. Early on, I also ate a lot of sugar free Jello and sugar free jello pudding. Even putting it into the greek yogurt can be good. Best of luck -
Was that dumping?
esskay77 replied to Daenerys Targaryen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That does sound like it but not sure why--must have been that you ate too fast. I don't get diarhea but I do get the fast hear beating, nausea, and lightheadedness. Not sure how to describe the rest--almost like I could pass out but I don't. -
Anxiety about being almost one year post op
esskay77 replied to venomousflowers's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Forget about the past--focus on what you can do today. Get back on track. -- keep logging your food/protein in a food log/diary -- drink all your Water -- count grams of Protein and eat that first -- no white sugar, no white flour (I don't know if all dr's say this but mine did so your mileage may vary) -- stop drinking water 30 minutes before eating -- no drinking anything while eating -- chew, chew, chew, take your time, eat thoughtfully and mindfully -- start drinking water 30 minutes after eating -- exercise every day -- take your Vitamins every day These are the basics--are you doing them? Have you fallen off? Get back on and the weight will start to come off again. -
Sleep study nightmare
esskay77 replied to gina171's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Very few people actually sleep through these studies and I believe they know that and account for that. But, you probably doze off and give them enough data from that. I didn't have any dryness or swelling --that sounds like a completely different issue. What did your doctor say about it? The sleep tech isn't a doctor most likely so they wouldn't be able to address it. They need to rename this study because nobody really sleeps. lol -
Is something wrong with me?
esskay77 replied to KariLovesColorado's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It took me quite a while to eat salads. What I did, and frankly still do most of the time, is get a salad with chicken on it and I eat the chicken first and then some of the random veggies on the salad but I still don't eat a lot of lettuce. It doesn't appeal to me much anymore. At least when I'm out. At home, I do have lettuce sometimes but it is definitely less lettuce than I ever used to have. Like I said, I eat the chicken, some tomatoes, green peppers, red onions and I'm very happy.
