Non-Dairy protein suggestions
esskay77 replied to kimr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Edamame, ground turkey, I also cook up some chicken and then put it in the food processor to puree it. You could do that with turkey, chicken, (and beef, pork if they let you have that, though I'm thinking you probably shouldn't have beef or pork yet). Scrambled eggs, any kind of egg really. Deviled eggs. Scotch eggs, Hard boiled eggs (scotch eggs are hard boiled eggs (peeled) that are encased in ground turkey (will look like meatballs), rolled in parmesan cheese and then baked for 20 minutes at 350. THey are yummo. -
My rash was not related to the surgery and was actually several years before my surgery but the powder that they gave me also made it MUCH worse! WHen I told them, they said to stop using it and had me use a cortisone cream. I think it's the same cream/ointment for jock itch! lol. A really good person to ask is a pharmacist. THe one at my CVS is really great. They have a consultation window you can walk up to. best of luck--that sounds miserable.

7 months out of surgery. All I want is fruit to eat!

Never? Or just for a while? I was wondering the same thing and have also been craving fruit. -
What was your first week pose-op like?
esskay77 replied to skinny_minnie_wannabe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Different brands of Protein shakes taste very different. Some are great, some are horrible. I have one that the flavor is Gourmet vanilla and if you mix it with no sugar added apple juice, it tastes a bit like a pina colada! I have 2 different brands of chocolate. One is fine the other is disgusting. As far as rushing back to work--listen to your doctor and listen to your body. I did go back before the 2 weeks was up and was fine. Could have even gone back a little sooner. Just a bit tired but not bad. But everyone is different. Best of luck. -
What was your first thought on the way to the hospital
esskay77 replied to DELILLIEFLOWER's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I, too, had second thoughts on the way to the hospital. I kept thinking "OMG what am I doing?" But underneath that I knew it was the right choice. I want to get healthy and nothing else had worked so far. I do have to say that while in the hospital AFTER the surgery I still had a bit of second thoughts but I'm a month out and that has gone away. And I know it was the best decision I could have made and now I just wish I had done it sooner--before it got this far out of hand! lol Best of luck to you. You will be awesome! -
Sleep apnea is actually one of the reasons that they WILL do surgery. After you lose weight, you probably won't have it anymore. Most of us have it. THey told me to bring my mask and hose with me to the hospital for after the surgery and the nights.

PROTEIN HELP PLEASE!
esskay77 replied to drobinson1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm also struggling with finding something interesting to eat as Protein. But even more, I was also wondering what people at the hummus or Peanut Butter with. One thing that I do like to have is a Scotch Egg, or a modified Scotch Egg. Make some hard boiled eggs and peel them when done. Take some ground turkey -- a handful that looks like a large meatball -- flatten it out and then wrap it around a hard boiled egg. Then roll it in some parmesan cheese. Do this will all the turkey. Then bake in the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes. Yum! It's a nice warm meal and very tasty but also portable. -
I haven't read anybody else's intro so not sure what to say. I just had my gastric bypass about a month ago, in January 2014. How did I get here? I don't know how it happened. I yoyo'd for years but it was never horribly crazy until about 15 years ago when I went to grad school full time while working full time and doing a freelance job part time. Lot's of sitting. The weight slowly crept on and I was too busy to notice until it was out of control. Actually, I don't think that I really noticed it too much--it was more other people making comments to me. People can be cruel! I joined Jenny Craig and started to lose weight but then they raised their rates and I decided to quit, thinking I could do it on my own. Unfortunately, I also quit my job to start consulting on my own, and I also quit smoking. What a trifecta! The weight came back very fast and kept going. Since I was still in marketing mode, looking for my first contract job, I was able to go to the gym every day. I worked out hard. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I would do arms and abs; Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, I would do legs and glutes. And then all the time I would then do the treadmill, bike, and elliptical. And yet the weight kept coming on. The next thing I know, I have gained 100 pounds, and I was already overweight. I don't know why it took me so long to even think that gastric bypass was an option for me but it did. My brother-in-law had the surgery a few years ago and he looks and feels great. It wasn't until my sister said she was going to do it that made me think maybe I should, too. So, after going through the process, I had the surgery last month. I'm feeling great, though a little tired yet. The weight started to come off nicely--I dropped a little over 20 pounds in just over 3 weeks. However, I haven't lost anything in the past week so I'm a little freaked out (and would love to hear if this happened to anyone else!). I'm still drinking Protein shakes and pureed foods but just this past week tried to get braver to try "real" food a little more. I'm very confused on how to incorporate food into my day. I do have to say that a menu plan was always my demise and here I am again. Anyway, I'm still trying to find some good exercise to do. What are others doing? For now, until I figure it out, I'll continue using the treadmill and bike but would rather do something fun. I have no idea how much weight I'll lose in the end but I'm excited to find out. If nothing else, I already feel better!

Introducing myself: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
esskay77 replied to RNYjane's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm also new to the post-op world having had my surgery in Jan 2014. I also have stopped losing weight already. Well, for over a week now, not one pound gone. Of course, it hasn't gone UP either but very frustrating because I also heard people say how the weight just melted off. I'm down about 20 pounds but it isn't obvious to others yet and they all look at me like it is not working. Kind of embarrassing. But protein--have you tried edamame? It's a bit carby but very high in Protein and my nutritionist said to go for it. Many restaurants have it on the menu now so that has saved me when I have gone out to dinner. When I have cottage cheese or yogurt or ricotta cheese, I mix them with sugar free Jello and it tastes great then. Sometimes I mix in the jello that is made and sometimes I mix in the powdered jello without making it. Totally changes the flavor of cottage cheese, etc. which isn't that tasty on its own. Some people put in cinnamon and vanilla extract, too. I would say that for people like us, it's going to take a bit longer but we'll get there. At least that is what people keep telling me. I have also had the thought that I will be the first person to not lose any weight after having the surgery! I guess that is a common thought. lol best of luck!
