How is it determined how many days you have to be on the pre-op diet?

I have just begun my journey to weight loss surgery. I have been informed that I have to quit smoking otherwise they will not do the surgery. How did the smokers out there quit. I am 48 years old and have been smoking since my early 20's. Thank you.

Cannot decide to do sleeve or bypass. How do I decide? I am 5' and am about 100lb's over weight.
