    Muscle Loss Sucks

I was sleeved on 2/4. I have been lifting medium to light for a week. The strength is coming back. I get 100g + of protein a day (mostly through Isopure 50g protien no carbs) calories are still a little low around 700-900. Down 30 lbs but desperately trying to preserve as much muscle mass as I can. I was a defensive lineman in college and have always been muscular.. Even when my weight crept up to 355. No issues with energy and lifting as long as I get my hydration. I shoot for a min of 100 g of H2O a day. It is hard to get but I focus on it daily.

    Golf

I am 3 weeks out and have already been to the range. Have already lost a good chunk of weight and found that I had to adjust my stance and swing a little to compensate. Michael

    Who Are You?

OMG another nurse! So many of us on here! Congrats on completing your NP. I start my program for Mental Health NP in the fall and thinking of relocating to TX after. I was just on Trulia looking at homes in the suburbs of Houston. I hope you don't mind.. I am going to add you as a friend and may want to pick your brain a bit. I too am a single mom of a 3 year old (I'm 43.....started late).. I travel nursed for 6 years been almost every where but never TX. Hope to to chat with you more. Joann I am torn between Dallas and Houston area. I been researching for a long time. I am partial to San Antonio. I have only lived in TX for 4 years but have found that TX is large enough that every major city has a completely different culture and feel. SA is pretty laid back with a very large and progressive medical industry. Lots of research etc. Michael
  6. Hello all I am new and just reaching out to say hello. I was sleeved 6 days ago. So far I am doing fairly well. Weakness is my only issue right now. Maybe I hit the ground running a little too hard (walked 2 miles yesterday and 1.7 the day before). After the walk yesterday I slept for 12 hours and woke up still feeling weak. No problem getting minimum fuilds in (still on clear liquids). Weight loss so far 21lbs (Start 354, current 333).
  7. I am giving them a call. I am taking in 100+ ounces of clear liquids. Thanks!
  8. Hi Tam, Welcome! I am right there with you. I am still on clear liquids and cannot wait for full liquids. Hopefully this Thursday! Feeling a little weak and dizzy but I know it will get better once I can have some calories. I am working this week too but luckily I can do this remotely.

    Concerned

If you are able get some excersise in along with the nigh protien diet. Do you have a 2 week pre-op diet comming up? If so, try to get some good quality excersise in then too. The high protien, water, and excersize will burn off alot of skeletal and hepatic glycogen (ready to use sugar sources for your body). Glycogen carries alot of water and is very heavy. It also takes up alot of space and will shrink your liver after you have burned alot of it off.

I am 6 days out too. Craving green olives.
  11. Awesome! You look great!
  12. Joan, thanks! As for relaxing, lol I am working remotely this week. Definately lets compare notes/progress/comments/concerns etc.

I'm eating like a prisoner on death row

I had pizza and beer my last night before the pre-op diet. I can only speak for myself but I had say farewell to many foods too. I am glad I got it out of the way and in a way that defies logic, doing so helped me to focus on my long term goals.
  14. I am so not a fan of the BMI. It was originally developed between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet during the course of developing "social physics", it is defined as the individual's body mass divided by the square of their height. The concept of the BMI is essentially 150-170 years old. In my opinion its use is primarily driven by insurance companies and their Actuaries. Using BMI as a universal tool to predict future health is lazy but it allows the rule makers to place people in nice neat pigeon holes. Since insurance companies use this tool to help predict profit/loss it has become ingrained in our lexicon. It may have some use as a generic guide but not much else. There are better indicators as you have outlined. As a former strength athlete I will never hit a normal BMI. In fact if I ever reach singe digit bodyfat I will still be considered obese by the BMI table. Measures of health need to be evaluated on a individual basis. Even the US military knows this. When a Soldier/Airman/Marine falls outside the height/weight tables they are not automatically considered overweight. They then have body composition measurements to determine percentage of body fat. How can BMI be a good indicator of future health when it is not a reliable indicator of current health? Thanks for your post!
  15. Linda, you are not being negative:) My wife is telling me the same thing. As the morning progresses I am feeling a little more energetic and focused. Going to slow down on the walking a little. Stephanie, congrats!!!! keep going!!!! I was taken off my blood pressure meds before I left the hospital. I cannot immagine what I would feel like if I were still on them. I have been off pain meds since 2/8.
  16. I was sleeved Tues the 4th.

    Who Are You?

Hi everyone. I just joined today. I was sleeved on 3/4/14 (6 days ago). This thread is a great idea. It provides perspective to the weight loss journeys and helps to connect anothers journey on a much more personal level. I am a 44 year old male. I have been married ten years. I have a 16 year old daughter. I work as a Medical Project Manager in San Antonio TX. I have struggled with my weight all of my life. When I was young the struggle was there but less difficult. I was very active and athletic. I played football as a defensive lineman in college. However, once I stopped playing football the weight just started piling on. I have been able to loose it successfully a couple of times in the past but the efforts were draconian. The weight always came back. In the last 5-7 years the weight has been slowly increasing and despite my best efforts I could not slim down. I was averse to the idea of surgical intervention, thinking that I could do it on my own. Last April my wife was dignosed with breast cancer. She has successfully been through a mastectomy and chemotherapy and is cancer free. When she was diagnosed I decided (with her support) to pursue bariatric surgery so that we would both be healthy and enjoy many years together. It took almost a year to get insurance figured out (I am a contractor and my emloyer changed in the middle of the approval process). Somehow I got it all together and was able to have a sleeve procedure done. So far this has not been easy but I am taking it one day at a time. Overall I think I am doing fairly well .....maybe I hit the ground running a little too hard with excersize- walked 2 miles yesterday and 1.7 the day before. I was very weak after the walk yesterday and slept for 12 hours. I woke up still feeling weak. I am still on Clear liquids. So far I have lost 21 lbs from the start of my pre-op diet. The bulk of the loss has happened since surgery. (Start: 354 Current: 333) I am looking forward to this journey and find many of your stories and struggles inspiring. *pictures comming soon.
