Concerned About My Girlfriend Who Just Got Lapband
Cocoabean replied to TJWRANGLER's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nausea after any surgery very common. They kept he overnight..that is good. They are giving her anti nausea meds, good. They might not be giving her total relief, but the hopsital cannot predict how a person will react to anesthesia or medications. The nurse is getting ahold of the doctor, if she cannt reach him, she will getmthe on call doc. What you explain don't sound like complications from banding, just things that can haapen from anesthesia, It is also goof they kept her overnight to keep an eye on her. The fact that there was no room...eh..it happens, but she had btter care in the recovery room...nurses all over the place. Once you are in a room, they come by, but not as often. Plus if she had trouble with nausea or vomittingnin recovery that could explain the delay is getting to a room. I am guessing she might be extra sore after vomitting so soon after band surgery. If they don't give her one, get her a firm pillow to held against her belly when she coughs and for the ride home. You are a good friend. Reassure her it is just temporary and many of us have gone thru it. Be sure they send he home with snti nausea meds! -
Bandiversary Today, But Dr Wants To Take It Out ) =
Cocoabean replied to Lianne's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds as though he fears a slip. And this would/could be a second. I read somewhere that if you've had one slip you are more likely to slip again. If it is a second, that could explain the need to remove the band. The endoscopy will give a good idea of what is going on from inside the stomach, and show possible erosion. I'd want to REALLY talk to my surgeon about why he wants to revise to another procedure, then I'd probsbly do it. But I trust my surgeon, and my primary care doc, they work together as a team. My primary care doc had gastric bypass by my surgeon a year after I got my band. My band really tightened up on me for about 6 weeks four moths after my last fill, so we are going to do an edoscope to be sure all is right. I had an uuper GI in Sept right bedore the fill. Everthing was fine then. -
Non Scale Victory

Awesome to both of you! -
I know this was directed at Jenny, but if you read Lap Band's website, you will see they say 1-2 lbs per week is average loss for band patinets. Jenny having lost 6 lbs per month on average is right in the middle, spot on. For many, it takes SEVERAL months of adjustments before steady progess is achieved. My surgeon said 6 lbs per month would be good for me once I got to my sweet spot. I hit my sweet spot about 5 months post-op. I never did reach that goal 6 lbs per month goal. It was more like 3-4 lbs per month. He was happy that I kept losing month after month, and now 2 years after I stopped losing, he is very happy that I am easily maintaining that weight. When I was three months post-op, I was down a whopping 5 pounds. Now I am at 75 lbs gone and gone for 2 years. At a normal BMI, normal blood sugar, low-normal blood pressure, normal cholesterol. Being banded is not a quick weight loss plan, if you are looking for that, look at gastic bypass.

Restriction In Morning, Not In Evening?
Cocoabean replied to JennyBee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really works for me. Sometimes my answer is, "yes, I would." Slam dunk that I need food. Other times my answer is, "no, I really, really want that bag of Dorritos in the machine in the break room." Well, ok, maybe not true hunger. Maybe I am starting to get hungry, but the junk demons are calling first. So can I stave them off with something else? A glass of Water, might I be thirsty? A cheese stick? They are a bit salty. Maybe a slice of deli meat, or a few crackers. Or can I wait until my meal-time. My surgeon is not against a healthy snack if it is planned or truly needed. Asking the question at least makes me stop and think before grabbing the bag of Dorritos and eating it brainlessly. -
Did you purchase this study? $35.00 is pretty steep.

Restriction In Morning, Not In Evening?
Cocoabean replied to JennyBee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here is what I use to help me determine if I am really hungry....would I eat a can of green Beans right now? If I would, then I am truly hungry. If not, then perhaps I am just looking to graze, and the desire to eat needs more consideration. -
Port pain and swelling are signs of erosion. Hope you get it figured out and feel better soon!

Has Anyone Decided To Not Fill Their Band/?
Cocoabean replied to newme0617's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exactly what Mis said. If the band is working for you, no need for a fill. If it isn't, get one. Simple in the beginning. Talk it over with your surgeon and make a group decision. -
Sometimes there is swelling after a fill. Every time there is a learning curve for me after a fill. Smaller bites, chewing more, slowing down. there might be a food I can no longer tolerate. My 4th fill I ended up slightly overfilled. I put up with it for a week. When I got stuck on mashed potatoes and then yogurt, I have up and went in for a slight unfill. I'd had 1cc put in, I had .5cc taken out. It was instant relief! A month later I went back and had 1cc put in and was fine there for a year. So, go figure.

Here is some info about it from back in January: http://www.aboutlawsuits.com/medical-device-hearing-letter-24077/ Link to the letter within the article, you'll see some interesting facts.
-
I did not do an unfill, I just stabilized at a weight and stayed here. I get a slight tune up once a year. My surgeon orders an upper GI to make sure all is right with the world, we do about 0.25cc and life is good. I've maintained my loss very easily for over 2 years now.

Having Some Pain On My Left Side.. 3 Weeks Post Op
Cocoabean replied to Doweegirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still get pain in that area, for me it is gas. Sometimes worse than others. If it feels very wrong, call your surgeon ASAP. -
Awesome! And it itsn't really over, it just continues. The same as it was. Nothing really changes. Keep on going, just don't look for losses on the scale now. Look for non-gains.

Band Is Too Tight With No Fill......help!
Cocoabean replied to Carole Zurick Radney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Is your surgeon aware you are still not keeping liquids down? If not, make him aware. If he is, what is he doing to keep you hydrated? That should be your first concern. If he is and you are dehydrated still, and he is not addressing it, contact your primary care physician. How long is the Diflucan supposed to take? I know for yeast infections the oral is one dose and it takes a few days to clear it. Doing a quick search it looks like you'll be on it for a few weeks, but do you know when the symptoms will subside? Is it like with an antibiotic that you start to feel better after a day or two but must complete the entire course of treatment? If you can get any liquids down, try for some clear Protein like Isopure. It won't be as thick. Also gatorade to get electrolytes in. I hope you feel better soon! -
3 Days Post Op Liquid Diet Is Not Enough! Suggestions
Cocoabean replied to sma102205's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot of folk around here like Isopure. Give it a try. You might try Unjury also, they have chicken flavor and unflavored. I think they'll send you samples to try before buying a ton of the stuff. -
That is 3-4 lbs per month. A bit less than what lap band says is average of 1-2 lbs per week. I lost an average of .75 per week when I was actively losing. I wished it were faster, but you know what? I got there. I didn't work overly hard to do it. I've maintained it for over 2 years. I developed eating habits I can live with forever. Never before had I been able to lose weight in a primarily downward trend for such a prolonged period of time. I lost it over a 2 year period. Now I've easily kept it off with the help of my band. That would never have happened before. Stick with it, you can do this!

Mimi, sorry I did not see your questions about WW until today. Glad your appointment went well!!! I see you said later than your insurance does not required a 6 month program. Did you hear that from them or from your surgeon? Check both ways. Trust me, surgeon's offices make mistakes, not on purpose, but it happens. I do not know if WW keep an archive of the records. You might be able to submit credit card records of having paid them? I would recommend starting to keep a food journal now. Work with the nutritionist to develop a plan for pre-op, just in case they come back and say you DO need to do the 6-month plan. Your first meeting would have been the consult this week. As you go through your testing, time marches on, and you'll most likely see your surgeon during that time, each month that ticks by will count toward a 6 month program if you talk about what you are eating and you weigh in. From when I saw my surgeon to when I finally was in surgery, 6 months had gone by. So my having gotten it waived didn't really save me much. A two week pre-op diet to shrink the liver is pretty standard. Some surgeons don't do one. It is not fun. You don't have a band to help you, but it is very worth it!

3 Days Post Op Liquid Diet Is Not Enough! Suggestions
Cocoabean replied to sma102205's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This exactly. You do not want your stomach to grind AT ALL right now. That is the point of the post-op liquid diets. To allow the band to heal into place without ripping the stitches. It sucks, but really, you didn't go through all this just to possibly lose your band because you are hungry. I understand, I woke from the anesthesia hungry. When my surgeon called at 3 days post-op, I told him I was ready to eat my dog. Lucky for my dog he was much younger then and moved must faster than I. Please stick to your surgeon's plan for you. It sucks, but it is best for you. -
Hi and welcome! Not sure about doing your profile on the app, but you can do it via the browser version.

Concern over the stitches is valid. If the nausea continues, definitely call your doc for something.
