Pouch pain is your own fault- interesting talk with my PA
Amyllf2 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my 3 week post op check up with the PA on Thursday. We spent a good deal of time talking about pouch management. The one thing she drilled in was my responsibility with regard to filling my pouch properly, hunger and pain. She said pain in my pouch occurs when I have done something wrong. It's not caused by food choices, but how the I manage the food. She said pain happens when either bites are too big, or when you eat too fast. She told me to focus on those 2 things and not on measuring and how much I think I should or should not eat. My instructions are to take bites no bigger than my thumb nail and chewed each and every one up well. These bites should be spaced out 45 to 60 seconds apart. Eat for for 25 minutes. She said 25 minutes = 5 hunger free. 20 minutes = 4 hours hunger free. 15 minutes = 3 hours free. I'm on a 3 meal a day no snacks plan. So for now I sit at the table with my timer. I hope the pacing eventually becomes a habit and a natural occurrence. I also really need to run out and buy some adult looking "baby" spoons because my neon colored ones are not good for out of my house eating!!! -
Keep moving. I didn't think the gas -x helped at all. I made myself do laps around the house every hour.

April 2014 RNY/Bypass Post Op Support
Amyllf2 replied to Amyllf2's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 5 weeks post-op. I actually cut the grass today and survived. I've been very fatigued. I only work away from the house part time, but after 5 hours I need a nap. I've really been a couch potato unless I had to be some where. I am nauseous a lot but really just try to keep rolling. I was really upset about the lack of energy early on, but decided it was a waste of my time. All our bodies are going to react differently and I just need to accept the pace mine is taking. Your body will let you know when it's ready. -

Have you played with the time you eat? I get up between 6:30 & 7. I immediately have 12 Oz of decaf hot tea and try to have 12 Oz of water. I don't eat breakfast until 830 -9am. The fluids first seems to work better for me. -
Jump on the sleeve boards. This is the Bypass board and our journey is a bit different.

Week Four: Training for the Philadelphia Marathon?
Amyllf2 replied to MrsGloMartin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did the surgeon give you a training program? It's totally doable with a good program. I use to do triathlons with Team in Training even at 225lbs. It was all about the training. Usually 4-6 months. Crossing that finish line will be one of the highlights of your life. -
I've had a variety of pasta with no issue. Ramon noodles, microwave mac n cheese, regular pasta mixed with tuna. I've had perogies. Tonight I had part of a lean cuisine cheese lasagna. I've not had an issue with any of it. I was allowed to add pasta at the start of week 4. Now I will say, it freaks my mother out that I am eating pasta because she said it was several years before she could, but her program didn't allow it or bread. Mine allows both.

I'm feeling a bit frustrated. I'm 5 weeks out. I'm sick and tired of the food I'm allowed to have at this point and the fact that I have 10 more days of it. I will never eat tuna or white flaky fish again after this. I'm not eating enough protein because eggs are literally the only thing I can stand. So some of my meals don't have protein. I'm also nauseous all the time. I was on an antibiotic for a bladder infection but I had to stop. I'm hoping that helps. I've resorted to eating saltines as needed. I've also determined my gut will not tolerate cheese. My pouch is fine with it but my gut is not. I know this is minor stuff in relation to what many experience. I am grateful these are minor annoyances and not major complications. I try to keep it all in perspective. -
If you are a veggie fan it works out great. I've done it with zucchini in the past. But honestly, I am 5 weeks out and able to eat regular pasta. I'm buying protein fortified to add a little extra protein to my day. I'm not a big veggie fan especially when I can have the real stuff.

My instruction were to start with 2 TBSP and work up to 1/4 cup. I don't think I ever felt full since I don't feel hugry.

Have you tried pre-made lactose free Protein shakes? I did shakes during weeks 1 & 2. Used GNC total lean chocolate. I had surgery on 4/15 as well but my practice only allowed shakes for 14 days. I'm eating soft food now and getting protein from eggs, tuna, canned salmon and flaky white fish.

You might want to jump on the post op sleeve forum to get that answer. This is the Bypass board and our pouches are very different from your sleeved stomach. -

I am eating eggs (scrambled, hard boiled, egg salad), canned or package tuna, canned or packaged salmon, flaky white fish, hummus, 2% cheese sticks, Beans. All of this is on my plan starting week 4. My practice is not focused on protein numbers at this point. Im not suppose to track them. I'm suppose to eat protein 3 times a day. I did ask the nutritionist and she said the amount if protein I need is basesd on my goal weight not current weight. I think my goal eventually is only 35g. -
I'm one month out as well. When my meals take 25 minutes as instructed by my practice, I seem to avoid feeling crappy. If I only eat for 15 minutes then I feel crappy in about 3 hours. I also think different foods do last longer. And hydration is key. Your bariatric practice will be able to assess what you are eating and help you identity what's going on.

No support from Spouse
Amyllf2 replied to ktucker1979's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
No offense to the guys on this board, but men can be very clueless. They can also be cowards. Change is not very easy for them and maybe your husband is afraid of what will happen when you become the fabulous new you. We all look for approval from people we love. If he can't give it to you, so be it. Look for the approval from the other people in your life. We can't expect 100% approval and we don't need it. This decision is for you first and foremost. Your kids benefit greatly too. And whether he realizes it, your hubby will be better off in the too. -
That's just about where I was. 5'6" 248 on morning of surgery. Down 19 at the 2 week mark. Stalled at the 3 week mark!

No. The sleeve is much bigger than a pouch. The sleeve also does not react the same to fried foods, high fat foods, and processed foods the same way as the pouch does because there was no bypass involved. The regular stomach acid in the sleeve processes food the same way it did in the big stomach. It's just holds a lot less food.

I'm 30 days out today. What else are you allowed to eat at this point on your program to get protein? Yogurt? Cottage cheese? Soft Cheese? Beans? eggs? I have not been allowed to have protein supplements for 2 weeks now which is good because I was having a lot of trouble with them. I am getting protein from food sources now. My buds are different too. I ate peaches this week and they were very disappointing (use to be my favorite thing). They just didn't taste right. -
Now that you've had surgery...what's your biggest obstacle?
Amyllf2 replied to Marathongirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 30 days out today. Social settings are my big obstacle at the moment. I had to decline and end of the year meeting because it was being held at a local buffet. Memorial Day is also going to be challenge. -

Pouch pain is your own fault- interesting talk with my PA
Amyllf2 replied to Amyllf2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
JoleneB, I am 4 weeks post op tomorrow. I'd say week 1 was really tough and each week after got better. Actually each day got a little better. Looking back so much of the "blah" early on was related to comfortable sleep, or lack there of. I'm still having energy issues. I've had to add some non-traditional fluids and I've doubled my B12. Now that I am eating more "real" food" I feel more "normal" which I think is also helping. Hang in there. Each day makes a huge difference!
