I have a fitbit zip. This summer at an amusement park my son questioned the accuracy. So i turned on the mapmywalk app on my phone. They were very close distance wise. The app doesn't do steps so I couldn't compare actual steps.

Scared of missing comfort foods!
Amyllf2 replied to little_mrs's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm having serious stress at this point in my life. Would a huge colossal donut from Shoppers and a diet coke make me "feel" better? The old me- yes. The 6 months post op me sat at the traffic light in front of Shoppers this morning and said to myself "damn I wish I could have a donut. OH WELL" For me getting sick just isn't worth it. Feeding my emotions doesn't have the same hold on me. -
Some of those questions depend on where a person is in their weight loss journey . As you add food each week your "must have" list changes. I had the popsicles and SF Jello for about the first 2 weeks then have not had either since. (I'm 6.5 months post op) I had tuna for a few weeks but will probably never eat it again. Same with white flaky fish. Once I got on "real" food things changed and the variety really increased. Right now my must have, go to when all else fails food is Dannon light and fit strawberry cheesecake yogurt. I have a fridge full. I also always have nuts and Peanut Butter available. I do find myself eating lunch meat almost daily. Sometimes ham, some times turkey, other times roast beef. I use Foldit bread with cheese for lunch most days. beverages you like are a must. Either pre-made or in packets. I'm a big tea person so I have a lot of that at home. I cook all the normal stuff for my family. I'm no the slightly bit phased by what they eat. Sometimes it works out that I can eat what they are eating, and other times I would not dream of eating it.

What is everyone eating on Puree?

Are you allowed to have yogurt yet? I'm obsessed with Dannon light and fit strawberry cheesecake! -
I was set on the sleeve but after speaking with my surgeon I decided to go with the bypass. "gold standard" he called it. I also went with it because I had a history of off and on heartburn which is made worse by sleeve. The other big factor was the sleeve was not restrictive enough for me. If I had a sleeve right now, I would be eating pumpkin pie. I'm craving it so bad and I know I would give in. With the bypass I won't. It's not worth getting sick.

As people get use to seeing a smaller different you, the comments should subside. I get comments all the time now but it's new people who have not seen me. I figure it's going to take a long time to get through everyone I know.

I am 6.5 months post op. I have been losing hair for about 2 months. No new growth on my head yet but I am seeing more "fur" on my face. I've always had very light fuzz on my face but I have noticed a lot more these days. My eyebrows are also thicker which is weird. I have been taking Biotin.

Setting Your Goal Weight
Amyllf2 replied to bariatrick's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon has not set a weight goal. The only number we spoke of is what I can realistically expect to lose based on the 65-70% of excess weight. They factored my weight at surgery and the lowest weight for my height. That made me 118 pounds over weight. So I was told based on statistics, if I follow the instructions he gave me, I can expect to drop 82 pounds. At 6.5 months out I am 8 pounds from there. I am wearing a size 12 jeans and honestly, I would be very happy to stay here. Do I still have fat? Yep. Do I care? Truthfully- I don't. I'm going to 49 in 6 weeks and I have no desire to be "skinny" nor do I care what the scale says. I will continue to weigh myself so I don't get fat again, but I will not focus on the numbers. I would also like to stop losing in hopes that my skin will have some time to adjust. The smaller I get the more skin I have to deal with. For me, that's my struggle. Not the scale. -
gastric bypass vs. sleeve
Amyllf2 replied to jennyksmith84's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Find a surgeon you like and trust. Then discuss the options. I walked into the office 100% sleeve. 2 months later I walked out of the hospital with the bypass. My surgeon was great explaining the pros/cons with both. For me the main issues with reflux/gerd. If you have it prior to WLS, the sleeve is not a good option unless you plan on taking medicine forever. That was a big factor in my decision. The other factor was freedom. I got obese from eating crap. The sleeve does not restrict you from eating crap. It only restricts you from eating as much food. So that pumpkin pie that is calling my name would certainly be consumed had I had the sleeve. But at 6 months post-op bypass, no way. Yesterday I decided I was going to eat like a "normal" person. I had 2 pieces of sesame chicken, a chicken wing, 4 fresh tortilla chips and cheese queso dip. Stupid idea and I paid the price. I had a big episode of dumping and threw up foamies 4 times over the next hour. My bypass keeps me in check. I have only dumped 4 times in 6+ months because I make good choices. My last issue for ditching the sleeve idea was strictly a mind thing. In the end I got too wrapped up in the what if game in my own mind. When I sleeve is done they remove your left over stomach. Gone. Out of the there. So what if something happens? I know that doesn't even cross people's mind but for me it was too much. -
What has your nutritionist and surgeon said about your weight loss? I don't use any Protein shakes at all. I get my protein from food only. That was my surgeons rule after week 2. I get anywhere from 50 to 100 grams of protein a day. Some days my tracker says I eat as low as 600 calories while other days I get to the 1000 calorie mark. My goal weight loss total is 88 pounds. So I expend a ton of energy trying not to compare myself to others on the board. I started out with a BMI of 40, which is much lower than many people. So logically I know most people will be dropping weight at a much different pace than I will be. That being said, I'm shocked to have lost 73 pounds in 6 months. Honestly, I wish I had loss less. That sounds crazy but I think people like you who have slower weight loss will end up better off in the end. My skin has not been very kind to me. I think had I lost a bit slower it may have done better. So your slower pace may end up a blessing in the end. I am 15 pounds from my goal. It's not even the goal for height, it's just the number I through out there in the beginning. But now I am actually hoping to increase my calories to slow down my weight loss. Seems crazy but honestly, I'm a size 12 on the bottom and a M/L on top. Truthfully, I am great with that. I'm almost 49. I'm 5'6". I look healthy. I don't need to be tiny. To me I'm a good size. And I just bought a bunch of pants for the winter and I'd love to wear them for the next 4 months!

Typical meal 6 months & one year out?
Amyllf2 replied to happymama2014's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 months out and the amount I can eat depends on the food and even the time of day sometimes. For example I can eat a whole bagel and cream cheese when I have "coffee" with friends or I opt to just drink tea. For the other meals I always get a doggy bag. For instance at Outback I can usually eat 1/2 a small steak and 1/2 to 3/4 of a veggie side. -
I opted for the bypass for this exact reason. My surgeon said heartburn and reflux gets worse with the sleeve and that I would have to take meds forever.

I've been taking biotin. I'm losing a lot of hair anyway. I'm at 6 months and I see no signs of it stopping.

Help with crushing meds into food/liquid
Amyllf2 replied to smiley922's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use chew-able Vitamins, Calcium, Biotin, B12 and D3. I shove the crushed medicine in with some of those to mask the task. Not perfect but it does mask the awful task of the crushed pill. -
I can so relate to gahannagal's comment " I didn't want to eat a single thing for weeks." I did not however, have any issue with making family meals. In fact, I had surgery less than a week before Easter and still put a meal on the table. The food didn't bother me, it was the level of energy that was my problem. We all will deal with these kinds of situations at various stages in our journey. There is no right or wrong answer. There is only your choice. I cooked Easter dinner for my family because I wanted to. I skipped a class reunion picnic at my 3 month mark because I didn't think I could handle it. This weekend we had an early Thanksgiving family meal because people were in town and at 6 months I was able to eat everything and anything but dessert. It was about a small plate, and a spoonful of foods instead of a large plate with big portions. (I'm 6 months post-op) The other thing I have seen is a change of attitude about food within my family. Your son is coming to visit and to introduce you to a girl. He's not coming to eat. Meals and food play a much less significant role for my whole family now that I am a WLS patient. I see the attitude change in all of us.

Any tips on avoiding loose skin.....?
Amyllf2 replied to newxina's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm 6 months out. I have lost 73 of the 85-100 I plan on losing. I am almost 49 years. I have had 3 children, two of which were 9 pounds plus. I've been married 24 years. I have been obese for 20 years. I was extremely athletic in high school and I have always weighed more than the charts say I should because of my muscle mass. I tell you all of this information because all of those factors play a role in skin. 80% of my body has excess skin at this time. Honestly I was not prepared for this mentally. I expected the stomach and apron based on how big I was when I was pregnant. I did not expect the sag everywhere else. It's most noticeable in my arms, belly, thighs and boobs. But I also see it in my neck and face, although that is improving with a lot of moisturizing and time. I have wrinkles now that my face is not so plump!!!! I went from a 22 to a 12. My legs are probably a 10, but my belly and apron may not ever get there. And you know what, that's ok. For some hydration will be the key. For others it will be exercise. Some will have kind genes, and others will have a harsh reality like me. None of us are losing weight slow enough for our body to adjust accordingly. My 17 year old lost 65 pounds over the course of a year and has no skin issues. Granted, she's 17, but she also lost 1.25 a week. That slow loss let her skin rebound. Here is my personal opinion about this- having weight loss surgery of any kind is about health. While we all want to look good, that is a secondary factor in this situation. I knew going in that my body image issues would not go away but they would just change. Do I like what I see in the mirror any better now? Honestly, no. Do I feel great in my new regular size clothes? Absolutely! Most importantly I feel better knowing I'm not going to die from the medical issues that plagued me 6 months ago. As mentioned above, lots of people have plastic surgery after WLS surgery. It's very expensive and most insurance companies don't pay for it. So it's a big decision. It's also often a longer recovery than the WLS surgery. I went to a plastics session that occurred during my practice's monthly support group. The most important thing the plastic surgeon stressed was this: "you have 2 choices: skin or scars" You will have one of them. I have not given up on my skin. I am changing my exercise routine, adding more weight training, looking at different moisturizers, and trying to better hydrate. I am also not closing the door on plastics, but that's at least 6-12 months away -

I'm 6 months out and I am still told not to worry or focus on calories. I have been using my fitness pal to track my food for the past 2 months, but really only to see my Protein.

Don't run out and buy a ton of isopure. Try it first. People love it or hate it. I hated it.

What food did you eat that you knew you shouldn't?
Amyllf2 replied to DaronB's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
diet coke. We are all told no fizzy things. I've not had any reaction. Now I do let it sit for a few minutes to flatten it a bit, but I so love diet coke. -

I had mine down 8 weeks before my RNY. I had it on a Friday and went back to work on Monday. I think it was easier than the RNY recovery. Some of the same stuff like gas pains.
