  1. When it becomes obvious that I have lost a ton of weight, and people start asking, I'm going to tell them. My "out-laws" will just be told I worked with a doctor and eat very low calorie.

They will be giving you bags of fluid via your IV. I also got medicine that way too. But speak up and tell them your concerns!!

    April 2014 Post-op

I'm good on fluids but not on Protein. I'm finding things need to be cold or hot. Room temperature stuff is not cutting it. I'm getting 18 oz of decaf tea each day. I'm loving SF Popsicles and SF Jello. I made 3oz containers of jello pre-op which has been great. I'm eating a few each day. I'm also good with chicken broth and having 8-12 oz a day. I have Swanson 33% less sodium. Now I'm not a big spice person so I don't mind the bland taste. I find things too sweet. I'm mixing power aid zero with Water. Can't take the diet snapple or premixed crystal light. I am using powder crystal light to play with taste. Protein is a different story. I'm struggling. I have many flavors if isopure. Grape was gross. I will try again when I get some grape power aid zero. I'm trying fruit punch mixed with power aid zero today. Tried unjury strawberry with skin lactaid which was awful. The only thing so far that doesn't make me want to hurl is chocolate Total Lean premade shake.

    Dumping

I'm allowed to try oatmeal and cream of wheat in week 2. My mother said she could not stomach either of those for several years. Same with pasta and bread. It just shows how different we all are and how differently good will affect us.

What procedure did you have that has you eating turkey a week out?
  6. Diana you will do great. I'm day 4 post op. I'm pretty bored right now so that's my challenge. I didn't think surgery was bad and recuperation is really what I expected. I've still got some gas pains that I working threw. I don't want to go outside becuz the pollen here in Maryland is terrible and I can't bare the thought of sneezing!!! I'm getting more Fluid than required but struggling with the Protein drinks. This takes patience. You will do well. We will all be so happy with the decision we made. Don't take a lot of stuff to the hospital. I only used my cell phone, hairbrush, tooth brush and underwear (I couldn't take laying in bed without some on). I didn't touch anything else. sleep when you can. Take pain meds when offered. Don't compare yourself to others. Get up and walk as soon as you can.
  7. My poor husband is having a heart attack over the amount of bruising I have near by 2 left incisions and the one right under by belly button. There is minimum bruising around the other 4 incisions. I'll be hones, it's pretty damn shocking but they don't hurt so I'm not concerned. Anyone else have bad bruises? I'm really fair skinned. I have a bruise on my arm from the IV and on my hand from where they drew blood too.

    April 2014 Post-op

I agree about the recliner. I've been in mine the last 3 nights, although I'm making the move up stairs tonight. My back and neck are starting to hurt. I'm a stomach/side sleeper so the bed at this point is not my favorite place. I'm very sore on my right side which seems weird because my left side is bruised beyond recognition. It's obvious those are the 2 "work" incisions but they don't hurt. I don't have any driving or ports. I think my right side pain is gas in and around my large intestines. I have a little gas in my left shoulder today too. I'm hoping to get. 30 minutes seated massage today. Doesn't that sound awesome?!!!!
  9. Beginning Day 7 I can add "light" no sugar added plain yogurt; low fat cottage cheese; unsweetened applesauce; loose mashed potatoes; loose plain oatmeal, cream if wheat or grits. I will still drink 4oz of Protein 3x a day. My instructions for the food read: eat 1 tsp of one of the foods listed over 15 minutes, 3x per day. Slowly work your way your way up to 2 tsp over 20 minutes. By the end if the week you can eat 2 TBSP over 25 minutes 3x per day.

Everyone will do great!! One thing I want to remind everyone is how different each experience will be. Do not compare yourself to others. Some of you have long pre-op diets some don't. Some have catheters some don't. Some have tubes and drains, some don't. Some see surgeons 1 week post op some wait 3 weeks. Some get pain medicine some don't. We can't control how out surgeons do things. Don't waste your energy trying to figure it out.
  11. My hospital required someone over 18 be there to discharge you. My hubby did spend time with me on surgery day but I was so sleepy he just watched TV. Same with day 2. It is certainly something I could have done alone but I would never have been able to figure out a way to go alone.

    CAN'T DECIDE!

I'm 3 days post op. I had the Bypass. It was not my original intention. But I have occasional heartburn which can be be a real problem with the sleeve. Although the malabsorption was a cancer for me, the bypass is the "gold standard" with decades of statistics. It also has slightly lower leak rate due to less staples on the pouch. I think you will fine lots of pros on the sleeve boards. Here on the bypass boards you will find more of us who opted for the bypass.

    April 2014 Post-op

I have not been on a computer to check in on our April 2014 Bypass Support Group. It's ver disappointing that we can access it on the phone apps. My surgery was 4/15@3pm. I was released 4/16 @ 7pm. I could not have spent another night as there were very loud non- Bariatric patients on out hall. That being said, yesterday was a bit rough with only Tylenol. Just got through my first 3 oz of Protein. Yuck. Grape Isopure. I got it down but it was not good. sleeping great in my recliner. Some back pain and very stuff/sore in my lower right stomach. Brushing at 3 of my incision sites is frightful.

Have you looked on the sleeve forum? I know there are some VSG folk here but it's mainly bypass people. I think theses same forums are available under VSG and LapBand

I'm glad I did not have to go to work today. I'm working at home and feel like I should just move my laptop into the bathroom. Day 3 of liquid diet and it's sure clearing out the plumbing that's for sure. UGH! I thought day 1 was really rough but I was out and about and did not drink or "eat" on a regular basis. Day 2 was fine and Day 3 I'm not hungry at all which I attribute to the mess on my desk. Travel mug of tea, travel mug of broth, bottle of ginger ale and a cup of apple juice. If my stomach even thinks about making a noise, I have something in arms reach. As of right now, my check in time is 1pm. Kinda sucks because I still have the same "nothing after midnight" rule that the early surgeries have. I am hoping to teach my 8-9:15am class. I guess I will shower twice since there is no way I'm going to class with no products on.
  16. Have you used the sippy cups? How were they? I would have assumed they were like straws and straws aren't allowed after my surgery because it can cause gas the cups I bought just have 3 small holes. they are not spill proof and they don't have straws. I got 4 or 5 for $2.98 at walmart. I'm 48 hours from surgery so I will let you know at the end of the week.
  17. I'm only taking off 1 week. I'm a college instructor so returning for work does not include long hours. The first 2 days I'm just monitoring some group work. I can sit if needed, stand if need, or even walk around. Both of those days are only 3 hours of class and day 3 is only 90 minutes. Then I have 3 full days of again. I had my gall bladder out on a Friday and taught on Monday. Didn't feel great but I survived. I do have a coverage plans in case anything unforeseen occurs.

    Nervous

I'm just over 48 hours away. The nerves are starting to creep in. But I keep telling myself I have done other things in my life that made me nervous or things that scared me. So this too will be fine. I have 2 kids and I remember how scary that was at the time. So I'm trying to look at this in that same way. Best wishes to all!!

    April 2014 pre-op group

I'm sitting here contemplating my "last meal" since my 3 day preop clear liquid starts tomorrow. I made my jello this morning, Popsicles ready, broth and liquids ready. Tomorrow will be a challenge because we will be eating out for lunch and at a huge BBQ for dinner. Ugh!
  20. Hi to all my April friends. I hope everyone is doing well. We are 1/3 of the way into the month which means we have both pre-op and post-op friends now. I started this page to give us our little special place. I've heard people cannot access it via the mobile apps which is a bummer. I also have only invited members who are having bypass. Why if we are all in the WLS thing together? I figure the VSG folks have VSG boards and groups. I also think the journey is different in many ways for both groups. We as RNY folks deal with Vitamin and absorption issues that the VSG folks don't. We also have the dumping issue which the VSG group does not have to deal with. So it just made sense to be an RNY group. As many of you can tell I have no idea what I'm doing with regard to the admin of this group page. I have a pre-op sub forum that I can't change. It will have post-op items in there as well. I apologize if there is any confusion. I wish everyone the best. Bravo for making this choice. Bravo for being strong enough to change your life for the better. Bravo for being part of our new little online circle. Bravo! Amy
  21. My NP said to expect "loose" BM because there is nothing solid in my system. She said it could last until I am getting more food in during week 3. I was shocked because everyone only talked about being constipated. I'm a few days pre-op so I'm getting myself in to the mind set that everything will be flowing out. Yuck.

    New Food For Post Ops...

    me too please! AmyLLF2@aol.com
  23. Target has nice white very small bowls and plates that are ceramic not nasty plastic. I bought some sippy cups to force myself to sip because it's an issue for me. My hubby thought I was nuts.
  24. I saw the PA and Nutritionist today for the final time. I'm 12 days pre-op. Seriously getting real now! Here are a few things that came up that I didn't know: What shocked me the most was the fact that I am to stop using Protein supplements starting in Week 3. I'm glad I didn't run out and buy a ton of it!!! Also starting week 7, I can pretty much return to "normal" foods including cooking with oil and butter. I got a prescription for 3 months of antacid/anti-ulcer medication. (I don't have it near me so I don't know the name). I'm told it's to aid in healing my pouch. Had no idea. No driving for a week. No lifting anything weighing more than 25 pounds for 4 weeks. I am not having a Q-On pump like the hospital told me. Meds in the hospital and tylenol ant home.
  25. I had my hospital pre-op interview yesterday. I found out my surgeon uses a On-Q pain pump. I had never heard of this before. Anyone else know they are using it? I have my pre-op surgeon appointment on Thursday so I will ask questions about whether I'm using this only in the hospital or will I take it home with me too. I found this youtube video. It seems to be a good explanation. http://youtu.be/deq0f2R1bPY?t=42s
