I am a 35-year-old woman with a wonderful husband and two great, growing children. My day job is as an HR Director at a local retirement community and in the evenings I am just trying to keep up with the family stuff...I love my crock pot, it's a great way to eat at home even when things are busy or I feel too tired to really cook anything.
I have been overweight since probably around 3rd grade and stayed that way all through school. So, I grew up hearing things like, 'you'd be so much prettier if you lost some weight' or 'you have such a pretty face' and although I had several close friends and high school was a lot of fun I still didn't feel like I quite fit. I graduated high school a size 18. I became pregnant with my first child at 20 and gained about 50 pounds, I lost about 20 pounds immediately after giving birth but then steadliy started gaining until I was a size 24. A few years later I became pregnant with my daughter and I was only allowed to gain 10 pounds, which I was successful about. Emily came in April 2003 and in November of 2003 a friend and I joined the local Curves that had just opened at my highest weight of 300 pounds. Over the course of a year and a half I lost about 110 pounds and I was feeling great! I was a size 16, had tons more energy, was shopping in regular clothing stores, fitting comfortably in a movie theater seat, and crossing my legs, it was fantastic! But after about 2 years I started to slowly gain weight and nothing I tried seemed to help at all. Weight Watchers, exercising, etc. only worked to lose 5 pounds or so and then it would come right back on. Before I knew it I was 275 pounds and holding and going to a WLS seminar with my mom. What stands out in my memory about that seminar was feeling discouraged and like WLS was scary... and my only options were to have something permanently implanted or have my insides rearranged. I remember feeling a certain amount of shame that i couldn't get this goal met under my own volition. I left that meeting thinking I would recommit to healthy food choices and getting more activity in...but I would get about 15 pounds in and it would all come back again. Two years later I found myself back on the internet doing more research on WLS and finding more and more that I felt like the Lap Band could work for me. So, my 35th birthday came in September and I felt like now was the time. I was/am otherwise healthy and tired of going through this same old routine. Waiting until I developed a chronic illness didn't make any sense, and working in a nursing home I didn't want to become an older person who couldn't walk or take care of themselves because of their size and how much that complicates other aspects of your physical health. Right now my children are 14 and 10 and I also wanted to be able to be more energetic and get out and do things with them! So, after looking for certified Lap Band specialists in my area and I found Dr. McEwen and made the call to schedule the consultation. I was very nervous and excited about making this decision, but I also knew i didn't want the same old things over and over. So, I started my supervised weight loss visits, quit smoking, quit drinking pop and started writing things down, and practicing my chewing. Around my 4th visit with the dietitian I found out I had been approved for the surgery and scheduled my date - February 20, 2014.
