My experience: I had my VSG on May 7th. My recovery has been wonderfully uneventful until day 13 post op when I started having pain in my left flank. It was mostly a dull pain that was there constantly, but would become much worse and very sharp if I cough, sneeze, breath deeply, move a certain way, etc. On day 16 post op, I called my doc's office when I realized it wasn't getting better. They told me to get to the ER right away. All blood and urine work came back normal, so they thought perhaps it might be a leak and sent me for CT scan. Good news is no leak, but they did find a splenic infarction. A small part of my spleen isn't getting blood supply from where they cut blood vessels that were attached to my stomach during surgery. I was told that it should fix itself by either regaining the blood suppy or that part of my spleen will shrivel up and die off. I was sent home with instructions to make sure I get plenty of fluids, take it easy, and pain meds as needed until it heals. They said my case was somewhat rare because an infarction typically presents itself within hours after surgery, not 13 days later. I also have none of the other accompanying symptoms (fever, chills, vomiting, or shoulder pain). My questions for those who have experienced splenic infarction: How long did it take for your pain to subside? Did you require any type of follow-up for it? Did you have other symptoms along with pain? Did you have any further complications or even require a splenectomy or did yours just heal itself? If you would, please share your story so I can just get an idea of other's experiences with it. Thanks so much!

Hi Maggy's Mom. Thanks for the response and the well wishes. I tried searching the forums already, but only saw a few posts from a few years ago. I thought perhaps there might be a few newer incidents of it since then. -
Oh, the Syntrax Nectar ones are the best! I bought a sample pack of them off their website to try them out first. 1-866-333-7403. Once I decided which flavors I liked best, I purchased them online. Vitacost.com had the cheapest price, $32 for a 2# tub, plus I was able to find an online code for $10 off my first order.

Yay! Congrats on all of your success! -
Hi Mhenne, I'm going to be at OSU, but just wanted to say hello and welcome! Hope all goes well throughout your journey.

Congrats! I'm tentatively on the same schedule as you.

Mandy, how did you surgery go? How are you feeling now? I hope everything went well and you're healing nicely!

I think there are a lot of factors that go into how long it takes to get through the process such as insurance requirements, OSU physician requirements, persistence of assigned program coordinator and patient, how many others are working through it, etc. I've read on other sites of some that got through OSU's program in as little as two months, where others took a year or more. I initially contacted OSU in November, and my first appointment with them was in December. I had to wait another month before my psych eval, then almost another month before EGD and beginning pre/post-op courses, and I took all first available appointments. Also, my coordinator said she wasn't sure if my 3-month supervised weight loss attempt with my PCP will count because I was on adipex along with diet and exercise. If not, then I'm back to the drawing board on that, and I won't find out until they submit for insurance after I've completed pre/post-op courses.

Hey! I spoke to my coordinator about it, and she left the scheduler a message. Then she (I think her name was Kelly) contacted me. She told me they usually like to wait until after you've had your psych eval done in case he/she recommends specific courses. She went ahead and scheduled mine anyway and said we could modify it if Dr. Kramer determined I needed something different. Hope that helps! Let me know if I can give anymore info from my experience so far.

How many preop appointments have you had with her? Have you already been approved?
-
I'll have Dr. Noria. She's who did my EGD. I believe my next step after these courses are ins approval, then meet w surgeon to get date. I'm curious how far out they are now as well. It seems like the longest part of this process has been waiting for appointments.

Hello everyone! I'm going through OSU as well. I've already done the psych eval, EGD, EKG, and working through the pre/post op courses now.
