Newbie looking for support
debralucey replied to leapyear's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats for making the decision for WLS. You will not be sorry. This is a great site, I follow it often but usually don't respond. I read your post and wanted to affirm that 50 is a great time to make these changes. I started my journey last November after turning 56. I was 245 and so unhealthy and unhappy. I lost some weight pre-op and went to surgery on April 9th 2014. I was 215. I have had no complications and today weigh 162. I can't tell you have much better I feel. I HONESTLY feel and look 15 years younger. I wish I had did it earlier! Oh and by the way, I live in Western Massachusetts! -
I usually don't reply to these posts but I thought that I would on yours. I had similar feelings as surgery got closer and I am SO happy that I went through with it. I am 56 years old and started at 245. I had not been under 200 pounds in 10 years so I would be fooling myself if I said that I didn't need it. I lost 35 pounds pre-op and at 215 as I told my family they all said " don't do it". They thought that I was fine. Anyway, I did it on 4/9/14 and had absolutely no complications. Minimal discomfort and I was back to work within a week. I am now weigh 175 and I am so happy. I haven't been this low in 20 years and I feel 15 years younger. There are diet adjustments but it is so worth it. I look forward to getting to a goal weight maybe 135-140 and not being overweight. I emotionally could not do the yo-yo anymore. Good luck to you

Trying to not feel defeated..only day 3
debralucey replied to Sha0717's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I actually came home heavier after surgery. It is IV Fluid, It will drop. -
I was sleeved on April 9th and I am having the same thoughts. Get some good Soup, either won ton or a good kind from the grocery and strain the soup out and have a nicer tasting broth. Have an extra Protein shake. It will be soon that will be able to have a few new things. I can't wait to make refried beans!

Congrats to you! I am yet another having their surgery on April 9th. I am excited, happy, nervous and terrified all at once. It is getting very real... -
I am having my surgery on April 9th. I am having similar feelings as you. Trying to keep busy. I am nervous but know that I am doing the right thing. Where are you having your surgery?
-
I can empathize what you are going through. My surgery is April 9th and I am having similar feelings. It has been a long time coming between all of the doctors appointments, consults, time off from work etc. I keep going back to my original plan and see what sense this makes for me. Relax, try not to read other people's horror stories. If you have faith in your surgeon and you have done everything you could to prepare, you will be fine. God Bless and this time next week we will both be on the other side and beginning a new way of life.

Hi Kim I take it you are a nurse. I am too. I am at work waiting for the doctor's office to call back with my surgery date. I understand your nervousness, I am as well but this is such a wonderful tool and I am sure that we will both be just fine. Good luck with your surgery. Post when you can Deb

debralucey replied to Jaime_Boston's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello There Congrats on your date. I think that you and I are on the same time table. I saw the surgeon today and not all of my pre-op information had reached the surgeon so I will be on the phone and hopefully I will get my date this week. I noticed that your are from Boston, where are you having surgery? I live in western Ma and will actually be having my surgery at Albany Medical center but I grew up in Melrose so I know the area, Deb -

Less than 2 weeks till sleeve!
debralucey replied to 87formula's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good for you! I wish I had less than two weeks left. I am in the midst of all the medical clearances and they are overwhelming. I do see the surgeon this coming Monday so maybe that will give me a better sense. You must be getting nervous! Deb -
Good advice from the last person. Try to determine what is most bothering you and speak directly to your doctor.

My gastric sleeve journey so far...
debralucey replied to StaceyVSG's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good for you Stacy. I am working through all of my medical requirements and it is good to hear from someone on the other side of surgery. Sounds like you did great. I am curious as to why your insurance would not cover? What kind of insurance do you have? I am worried about insurance refusal as I am not in a position now to pay cash. I have been counting on approval as before I started with the program my BMI was 42. Now lower 39.3. so I am a little concerned. Sounds like you didn't have post op complications? Deb -
Good luck to you on your journey,. Glad you found the site!

Hello Everyone I have just joined this site and hope to learn from you all. I have been overweight off and on most of my life. I am 56 and for the past ten years I have not been able to get any kind of control of my weight. I have been researching the gastric sleeve for the past few months. I have been a patient at Albany Medical Center for the past three months. I have done much of the pre-op requirements and I am due to see the surgeon on February 17,2014. I have gone from 245 to 221 since November 2013. Basically I guess I am wondering if those of you that have had the sleeve, are you glad that you did the surgery and what would you advise someone like me? Deb

Older people can lose a lot of weight with the sleeve!
debralucey replied to karen353's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
HI Karen Thank you so much for that post. I am 56 and have been a little concerned about my age being a risk factor. I don't really have chronic medical problems, just high cholesterol so I have been telling myself I should be OK. I understand exactly what you mean about your prior surgery dieting of losing 20 or thirty pounds but having so much more to go.. I am impressed that you had your surgery in April of this year and have lost so much already. What was your weight on surgery day? I have an all time high weight of 245 back in November and now weigh 221. I see the surgeon on February 17th. I was hoping that I would be able to have surgery in April but my age has been worrying me. Glad to hear your experience. Deb -
I hope that this all works on your time table. I am on a similar track, I am seeing the surgeon on February 17th and have a few more tests to complete. I am hoping for surgery sometime in April. Looking forward to the spring and summer..
