  1. Anyone and everyone please help! I had my surgery consult and my doc said he wasn't requiring me to get a sleep study but as my insurance had already covered it I went ahead. Sleep study revealed I have severe sleep apnea and now I'm supposed to wear the cpap machine but I have anxiety anyway and the thing sent me into a full blown panic attack and I fled the machine fitting sleep study. I'm going to keep trying but if I can't do this I'm afraid I won't be able to have the surgery. I emailed my surgeon for his thoughts but just really need some support from all of you. I've had such angst over this whole thing so please be gentle in your responses. Just get over it or you have to do this is not what I can hear right now. I assume my surgeon wasn't going to have me do this because he recognizes that obesity and sleep apnea go hand in hand. Anyone have similar experiences to share or words of encouragement? I'm just beside myself with this. Thanks.

Thank you Resterness! Shmily I get that it can be life threatening, that's why I'm pursuing surgery.

    Sleep Apnea and Sleeve Surgery

Okay so my surgeon responded to my email with a brief "I'd move forward with the sleeve and not pursue cpap." THANK GOD! I'm still going to try but it is a huge relief to know its not a make it or break it deal for my surgery which will probably greatly improve the apnea. I'm truly not having troubling symptoms that led me to the sleep study so I'm not highly motivated to push through. I don't have headaches and feel tired during the day or trouble concentrating, none of that. Again, I will try because I am curious to know if I will feel more refreshed. Thank you all for the support and I'll keep you posted on my progress.
  4. Bethany did you end up choosing the nasal pillows? Are you typically a nose breather or mouth breather at night? Thanks for the reply! Part of my problem as a control freak is fighting the voice that says what choice do I have...lol
  5. Thanks! I'll try that. I'm looking forward to not needing anymore after surgery. I don't think I've had this my whole life.
  6. Thank you all for your responses. I know probably working this up in my head to be much bigger than it is especially since I fled the sleep study after trying each type of mask for no more than 15 seconds at a time, including the nasal pillows, and now I'm agonizing about going back to meet with the respiratory therapist for a mask fitting. I think I'm clearly going to have to take baby steps to work up to a full night sleep study. I just can't imagine wearing the thing all night but I like the idea of being able to take it home and get used to it at my own pace. Sigh, I'm a control freak so this is a big hurdle for me. ????
  7. Problem should remedy itself. Anyone else have any experiences to share about sleep apnea and surgery? I need to email my surgeon and tell him what's going on because the sleep doctor has just freaked me out and I don't want to go back.
  8. That's incredible!! Way to go!! My doc wasn't going to require me to have a sleep study, presumably because he gets that obesity and apnea go hand in hand. I did it anyway because I had already received approval from insurance. Turns out though I have no symptoms if daytime sleepiness etc... that I have severe sleep apnea. I tried the cpap machine and it sent me into a panic attack and now I'm worried about this so much. I just want to have the surgery and lose the weight and the
  9. Thank you for your reply. Sounds like you're doing fantastic, good for you!

  12. Hello all, I'm 50 years old and finally decided its time to seek weight loss surgery after a life time of yo-yo dieting. I have had periods of success, losing over 100lbs twice on weight watchers. I'm active and do Water aerobics 3-5 times per week. I generally make healthy choices I just am a bulk eater so I'm consuming too many calories. I give this background because although I've done the research and for so many reasons feel the sleeve is the best choice for me, my surgeon tells me that research shows with my BMI of 60 that bypass is a better procedure due to the lack of absorption of caloric nutrients. Well that's one of the things that bothers me. I want to obtain the nutrients from what I eat and feel like having the ability to feel full and satisfied much sooner will be enough for me to be successful with continued exercise and smaller portions. The surgeon will ultimately do whichever surgery I choose but has told me I might have to come back for the bypass sometime down the road which of course I don't want to do. Anyone who had a similar experience or can offer advice is greatly appreciated especially if you're a sleeve patient with a starting BMI of over 50. Thank You and I'm glad to be here.
  13. Sarah, my sentiments exactly. Not interested in malabsorption and dumping. I don't typically eat high suger or high fat foods so I don't need this motivator thank you very much. I Also want to keep my pyloric valve in tact and not have a non functioning stomach left inside me.
  14. Thank you all so much for your feedback I'm so glad I posted and that I'm seeing that you all have received positive results. Abry let's keep in close contact since we're on a similar journey. I initially told my doc I would go with his recommendation but after agonizing over it I finally emailed him and said I want the sleeve. MegaBob thanks for the stats my doc is showing different ones????
  15. Congrats Vickybli that's a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud of yourself! I hope that will be me soon enough.
  16. Ah, I finally found the right forum for me. I'm 417lbs and want the sleeve but doc is recommending bypass. Doesn't sound right for me for so many reasons so I'm thrilled to see so many success stories with similar starting weights and great successes. I'm committed to the process and feel I'll have great success with the sleeve. I hear it's not really very easy to stretch like you hear people talk about because it's actually the less stretchy part and more muscular part of the stomach that the sleeve is made from. Have others heard this too? So happy to have found you all.
