Children & surgery
DJ's Mom replied to Sugarnspice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My soon-to-be 11 year old has known from two months in since I had to do the 6-month pre-op and a lot of office visits. I incorporated that help of the doctor so when we went to my visits if he had any questions they were willing to answer them for him and he was fine with everything. He often reminded mommy that he didn't think she was fat but he understood she needed to do what she had to to be healthier. As we got closer to the date he became more anxious which was expected; as he did have more questions and the doctors were really nice to answer them for him and even gave him a plan as to how he can help mommy be successful. I know some people thought he really didn't need to know what was going on however I'm a social worker and have worked with kids and they are very insightful, what affects their parents a lot of times negatively affect them and if they do not have the right outlet to express their feelings and concerns or at least talk about what they are feeling it doesn't turn out well for them. I had my surgery on Tuesday while he was at school when he got to the hospital he had no idea that I had already completed my surgery because I was doing so well, just sleepy. He's been with his dad every since Wednesday but has called me from school and the after-school program to check on me and make sure I was getting my walking in and that I was getting all of my protein in. He will be back home tomorrow and his plan is to walk with me around the neighborhood as long as I can tolerate it. So, if your child is mature enough to understand that you need to be healthier for yourself in order to better care for them in the long run I think they will be understanding and willing to help you make the life changes that need to be made. -
Protein intake, struggling
DJ's Mom replied to vsgbeauty13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree if it wasn't for these items would only hit 40-50. They also taste the best to me. -
Is this normal sleeved on 2/15/17
DJ's Mom replied to BigJohn58's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi hope you are feeling better. I got my sleeves on 2/14 and was sent home the evening 2/15. I developed a low-grade temp that night think it was 99.9; at the time on my discharge papers said if I developed a temp higher than 101 to call them as that is cause for concern but anything less than that was normal. I did however have a cough that caused me to cough up some blood which was a major concern for me I spoke with the on-call doctor and he was advised that there is some blood in the stomach from surgery that was i'm normal but if I coughed up more that I should go to the emergency room. When I was discharged they provided me with Zofran for the nine to get liquid oxycodone for pain and something like Prilosec Outside from the gas pain I've been pretty good and only used the Zofran twice. Good luck to you. -
What's Your Goal Weight Gift to Yourself?
DJ's Mom replied to Newme17's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I want to take a trip to St. Thomas or Miami. Anywhere that I can enjoy the beach life for four days or so. -
How far should I be walking?
DJ's Mom replied to EmmyJ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4 days out and wish I could get that much. Besides walking to and from the bathroom and around the house I haven't gotten much walking in. I live in a snow area and going outside to walk is out the question. Trying to find someone to take me to Walmart or the mall to walk with me has been a little difficult. When I was discharged they said as long as I walk it doesn't matter how much. I just need to get up and move around every 2 hours that I'm awake. So hope that helps. -
Sleeved on Wednesday! Normal pains?
DJ's Mom replied to jjsasha's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on Tuesday and just experienced this last night. I just got up and felt so much pain and bloating. TMI but I went to the bathroom and attempted to pass gas, I actually had my first bowel movements since pre op. I no longer feel bloated and majority of the pain is gone after being able to pass gas several times. Good luck to you. -
I was sleeved on 2/14. I found it interesting that they did not wake me before surgery luckily I weighed myself before going to the hospital and weighed in at 250 however when I was discharged yesterday I weighed myself at the hospital and wait in that 256. Is that normal? Did anyone else experience weight gain? When did you start to notice weight loss?

Thanks for sharing. I've been walking while awake and trying to get the fluids in. Each day seems to be easier than the day before.

I'm still in the pre-op stage until Tuesday and have been craving pasta like crazy on my pre-op diet. It's refreshing to know it's still an option months out. Has anyone tried the Dreamfield Pasta? I used it when I was doing low carb dieting in the past and it was really good.

Surgery Date: Valentine's Day!
DJ's Mom replied to vsg_dan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Dan, I guess we'll be twins. My surgery date is 2/14 as well. My surgeon is really hot so I finally have a hot date for Valentine's Day. LOL Anyway I must say the first 3 days on the pre-op diet was easiest for me. The longer it goes the harder it is. I guess because I'm bored with my options. There's only so much cottage cheese, apple sauce, broth, crystal light and protein shakes a person can take. So far I'm down 12 lbs since last Wednesday when I started. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery and here's to us having a new love for ourselves. -
I am currently dealing with knee pain now. I started this process back in July then in September woke up barely able to walk or bend my knee. Had X-Ray in September and MRI in Oct all it showed was excessive amounts of fluid. Mind you I was losing weight all this time. In the past when I would lose weight my knees would feel better but that wasn't happening this time. I amped up the Motrin and the pain one day finally left. 2 weeks ago it came back with a vengeance that it landed me in the ER. I got a steroid shot that helped for one day, got in with the doctor who ordered a new X-ray and it showed excessive fluid. He drained the fluid out and injected cortisone this was last Thursday and by Saturday the fluid was back as well as the pain. I'm now down 12 lbs from last week due to starting my pre-op diet and I'm still experiencing pain. Hoping after the surgery they will figure out yes it's weight related or there's something more going on.

Just wondering if there are any February 2017 sleevers here yet? I have my 3 month weight check on Monday and was told last month we will look at surgery dates and to plan for a date in February. I'm still struggling with not drinking while I eat but once I catch myself I stop but geesh you wouldn't think I would still be reaching for something to drink at this point. I've been told to make sure I get 21-26 gms of Protein with each meal, only 3 meals no Snacks in between meal and drink plenty of Water. I have a hard time finding a variety of protein meals as I don't do fish other than tuna and only eat pork, beef and chicken. I do the Premiere Protein shakes that have 30 gms but was told not to do them on a regular. With my job, if it wasn't for the shakes, I wouldn't be getting anything in as I rarely have a chance to take an actual lunch. Anyone else having struggles at this point and scheduled for February surgery?

February 2017 Sleevers
DJ's Mom replied to DJ's Mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Disneyfan good luck. I too was thinking the band when I first started this back in 2014 and decided after hearing more about it and the sleeve that I would do the sleeve. I had completed everything I needed to except scheduling the surgery and I chickened out plus I had lost 30 lbs and seconded guessed if I even needed the surgery since I was doing so well and they had finally gotten my thyroid under control. Two years and regaining the 30 lost plus an additional 30 here I am again and there will be no changing of the mind. I can't wait. Littlesuzu good luck to you as well. I have safe travels both ways. If I find any good recipes, I'll try to share them here. -
Who is choosing to keep surgery a secret?
DJ's Mom replied to Kila Rass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've only told 5 people outside of my mom, who I know will by my support system. 2 of them have had the surgery on the other 2 and my boyfriend have always had my back and support through many things. I was hesitant to tell my mom because she's so against surgeries but she was really supportative. I didn't hear the blah, blah, blah that I thought I would have to hear. She ended up telling my dad and his response was shocking as well as supportative. -

DJ's Mom replied to DJ's Mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started this back in Oct but didn't have a date yet. My date has been set for Valentine's Day. It was initially 2/16 but they had to move it up two days. Please share your dates, excitement, worries and what knot. -
Exercise and fibromyalgia
DJ's Mom replied to Havasumoma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Busybeebug, From my rheumatologist has told me the only correlation between Fibro and weight is most people with Fibro gain weight. She said this is mainly due to the pain and many other symptoms associated with Fibro. I was finally diagnosed 3 yrs ago and about a year in I had lost about 10 lbs in between my 6 month visit. She told me to keep up the hard work as it helps with the pain most people have in their legs and feet but mainly be you've lost the weight. I too have pain everyday and the stiffness, it just changes to different parts of the body however I'm so thankful that the medication I take is the reason for this. Prior to being put on medication I felt like I had been dropped off of a 12 story building. Every part of my body was in pain all day everyday. I couldn't even walk up right. Could be why my back is so much worse than it was. It took 2 years of everything but the kitchen sink before I was finally diagnosed. -
Exercise and fibromyalgia
DJ's Mom replied to Havasumoma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have fibromyalgia and have been for the past 2 yrs restricted to only exercising in a heated pool. Needless to say it doesn't happen because of my work and family schedule (single mom). I tried doing regular exercise and 5 mins in regretted it but pushed through to 10 mins and couldn't walk the next day. So I commend you for the 15 mins and baby steps are right. You'll get more in each time even if you just increase it by a minute. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App -
As a follow-up I talk to my doctor and just as I thought because Mirena is in a totally different place we are they need to do this incision in surgery that's not put the Mirena in to any Jeopardy of being accessed so the marina stays in there shouldn't be any problems unless there are hormonal issues which you can trigger an early cycle or have a cycle if you haven't had one in a while. I was wondering the same thing. I have a weight visit tomorrow and will be scheduling my surgery date. I will try to remember to ask about this and let you know what they say. I'm sure each place is different but would give us an idea of what to expect.

6 months of weights then VSG
DJ's Mom replied to GTFMommy2516's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My insurance required 6 months as well. I was told it's more so to help you prepare for what's coming and it allows you that time to get in the routine of what to expect once you have the surgery and is post op so it's easier for you and you're more successful without the struggle. I'm in month number 3 and it has gone by pretty quickly. I have lost 5 lbs with no exercise due to a bad back and now my knee is worse than when I started and I have been sidelined for the past month with it. Waiting for an MRI but I'm not going to let it get me down. I was not told that I have to lose or maintain just not gain. I have my 3rd weigh in on Monday and will ask as I'm already stressed since I haven't lost anything this month and just praying I don't gain anything. The hardest thing for me has been trying to get in all the Protein that's required and not drinking while eating. I've managed to not drink 30 mins before eating and 30 mins after but the not doing it while drinking is so hard for me. As for tips and advice, I was told to use smaller plates, increase my protein 21-26 grams of protein per meal, eat protein first, then veggies and if I have room my healthy carbs. Also chew, chew, chew to the consistency of apple sauce. Good luck to you and your husband. -
This is who I do it for!
DJ's Mom replied to hudjess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing this for me so I can be a healthier and more active mom for my only child. He's 10 and doesn't see mommy as fat and out of shape but I certainly see and feel it. I want to live long enough to be around for him and his children and if I have my grandmother's longevity his grandchildren's children. -
I have been worried about this as well because my hair is already so thin I wear a wig and weaves so no one can tell. I'm just scared after the surgery it'll be even thinner or I'll be completely bald and will have none of my own hair to help secure the wig or weave. I've been taking Biotin Forte for the past 2 years and it doesn't seem to help at all. Guess I'll deal with it when and if it happens.

New premier protien flavor in my area
DJ's Mom replied to busybeebug's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@busybeebug I was wondering if it taste good. Our Sam's Club has them $18.99 for a 12 pack. I bought the vanilla to give it a try and it's not bad. They had banana, chocolate and Vanilla. @@trekker954 I didn't know there was a caramel one. I'm going to be on the look out for that one. I like that it's really high in Protein and it doesn't taste bad. I just wish the containers were made of something different. -
I'm in the beginning stages of getting prepared but too have been told no drinking 30 mins before, during or 30 mins after eating. The reason I was given is because your stomach will only hold approx. 3 oz and if you drink anything right before eating you won't have room for your food and get the nutrition your body needs. From what I'm learning different doctors have different view points on a lot of things but everyone seem to be doing really well regardless.
