  1. Susan4794, That was a beautiful and comforting explanation, and I couldn't have said it better myself. I bet you would be a great counselor.

    dizzy and light headed

I was banded on May 20th, and started feeling extremely light-headed and dizzy the couple weeks after surgery. I found out from my doc that I had low iron (which many women do....) and that the surgery had made my iron even lower. I started eating ALOT more green leafy veggies and drinking low-cal electrolite drinks and felt much better. IT MAY NOT BE YOUR PROTEIN INTAKE. See your doctor and let them decide what's going on.

Weigh in... how much have u lost?

I can't believe how good I feel after getting the band on May 20th. I've got an iron problem that I'm trying to get over, but the band itself doesn't bother me at all! I've lost 20-25 lbs. depending on when you start counting. I even mowed the lawn yesterday in a pair of shorts that I hadn't worn in SEVERAL years! I seriously hope we ALL continue to do well in our progress.
  4. Hi May Flowers, Just a quick check in to say that I am doing well. As a matter of fact, I feel fantastic. A little pain here and there, but no gas and few hiccups (which burn a little). All in all, I'm getting around fine. I'll give more detail later, but I just wanted to let you all know how I am doing, and that I'm thinking about all of my May friends. Love to all of you!:crying:
  5. My dearest May Flowers, I am so upset I could cry. My boss came into the office yesterday with a cold and although I tried to stay away from him, last night – I started coughing and my throat was sore. Today, I sound like I have a school of frogs in my throat. I called the nurse of the doctor who will be performing the lap-band procedure on me, and she said, “Oh, you sound awful! Take some Tylenol Cold and Flu and give us a call on Friday… You may not be well enough for the procedure….” Now, I don’t have to tell you guys how that just crushed me. I had to psyche myself up for my May 13th surgery date, and I was SO excited, now I may have to postpone it??? I prayed and asked for a sign if this surgery was the right thing for me. Is this a sign?? I’m trying not to be depressed, but it is really….really…hard right now. :crying::angry_smile:

    Post-Surgery Check-In

Njudono, I had to postpone my surgery b/c I have a cold. But I'm now scheduled for May 20th at 7:00. Please put me in your prayers...and caterpillarfly, my Buffalonian friend, my dear dear lapbanktalk buddy...all will be well. These things happen for a reason. We don't always know what the reason is, but it's for the best. Keep in touch with us and tell us what you decide. My heart is with you.....

    My Fellow May Flowers.... HELP!!!

but it's OK! Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions regarding my cold. I had to cancel my procedure date of May 13th, but they can take me on May 20th so I can still be a May flower!!!! And it's all for the best. I would have been rushing things if I had my surgery today and didn't completely get over this bug. By the way, I took EVERYONE's advice - I sweat it out, got some good meds., did a lot of sleeping and believe it or not.....tried the neti-pot. I've gotta tell you, I could not believe that I didn't drown myself! The trick is to hold your mouth open and remember to breath through it. IF you hold your breath, you start to swallow the solution. And it really doesn't burn or anything in your nostrils. It's quite soothing. I think the neti-pot did help some, but I had a BIG bug to get over (had a fever of 101.5 on meds.). I'll continue to use it and thank you everyone for your help! I'll be sure to report back after my surgery date on the 20th! You guys are the best!

    My Fellow May Flowers.... HELP!!!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I called my doc and the nurse told me to take Tylenol cold multi-symptom. I have to say, the neti-pot is new to me! Do you really poor it in one nostril??? I'm going to try the lavendar Vics strips too, they do sound relaxing NY2LA. I've got a few chills, and feel a little achy, but I am staying positive. In addition, I'll be taking it easy Friday and Saturday. I hope that does the trick so that I can have my surgery on Tuesday! Thanks again for all of your support, it really does make a big difference.

    My Fellow May Flowers.... HELP!!!

Oh thank you NY2LA girl. (I grew up in upstate NY). I've been checking frantically for replies b/c I don't know what to do. I will definately take my tylenol and get plenty of rest and vitamin C. I would love to compare notes (hoping that I can have the surgery on the 13th....)

    Post-Surgery Check-In

Congrads!!! to all the brave May bandsters that went first. I'm getting excited now (May 13th). I think it was a great idea to get all of our feedback on our surgery in one place. I'll post here too, as soon as I can - after my surgery. I'll say a prayer for each and every one of us, and if you don't mind, say a prayer for me too......
  11. OK, I did some research and decided on purchasing an Actitrainer. I love the data I'm getting from it, but at $200 plus, I'm terrified I'm going to lose it. I was walking yesterday and the device (in the holster) snapped off of my waistband! Luckily I heard it hitthe ground, or it would have been gone.....gone... gone! Do any of you have any advice about how to keep it secure? The directions say that the best results come from wearing on the waist, so I don't want to use the armband accessory. Any information would be really appreciated. :confused2:

    Actitrainer ....Where'd it go????

Steph, sorry to hear about your actirainer. Reading your preivous posts was one of the reasons I decided to get it. I ended up buying a "Bungee" saftey strap that works pretty well. It's popped off my pants a few times and the strap kept it with me. Bodytronics Gadget Bungee Safety Strap: Bodytronics.com Thanks for your suggestions.

Emory Bariatric Center Surgeons-- any info?

I agree with atl. When I went in to see Dr. Davis, he was very frank but polite. He told me the good, the bad and the ugly. Since I hadn't lost much weight on the supervised diet, he told me the truth about my role in having the lap-band work for me. It was hard for me to hear, but he was/is right. I respect him for his honesty - his main interest is the patient, not the $$ the patient bring to his office.
  14. I just had an interesting conversation with a nutritionist in the Bariatric department where I'm getting my lap-band. She told me that exercising doesn't make you lose weight.....It only tones the body and helps with health issues. Has anyone else heard of this? I still think that can't be right!

    Exercise doesn't equal weight loss???

Wow, Who knew there were such varied opinions on exercise and eating. But in some way, I think most people are saying the same thing. Eat X-amount, exercise X+Y amount = weight loss. As long as you are not trying to build muscle. So the key is to move, move, move and watch what you eat. Thanks everyone for your opinion. Somehow what my nut says doesn't seem so ridiculous anymore.

    May Bandsters in Georgia?

My surgery will be at Emory in Atl. Surgeon is Scott Davis.
  17. Hi everyone, Just wondering if there was anyone getting banded in May in the Georgia area. It would be great to have a "walk/exercise buddy" to share the lap-band experience with!

    Exercise doesn't equal weight loss???

Thanks guys. I guess I was looking for a reason NOT to exercise- but I know better. Snow, I really wish I could get to a point where I feel like it makes me feel and look better. Right now, it just tires me out....

    Where is everyone from???

Jessica, What a small world. I live in Loganville, GA (work in Atlanta) and born and raised in Buffalo, NY!

    Actitrainer ....Where'd it go????

You can check them both out at BODYBUGG :: HOW IT WORKS and ActiTrainer Online Data Analysis - ActiGraph, LLC. Basically, actitrainer gives you more data than the bb but I'm told the bugg is more comfortable to wear on the arm. I decided to keep the actitrainer, so we shall see. Also the bugg is about $100 more.

    Scared

Jessica, If you hold my hand, I'll hold yours. We have the same surgery date in GA and reading your concerns was like reading my own journal. I think what we are feeling is expected. I'd be concerned if we didn't have reservations. But know, we are smart intellegent people that did our research on the lap band and that we are doing this for the right reasons. It's OK to be nervous, but it's not OK to ignore our health. (I'm speaking for myself here....) I've got insulin resistance also and have had it for decades. I keep saying, I can get a handle on it, I can control it. But I haven't done it yet. Well now, we are BOTH going to control our health issues. We you know what, we will both be fine if we stick to our doctor's instructions and have faith.

    May Bandsters in Georgia?

Hey Jessica, Great! I'm scheduled for the same day! I live East of GA. We have to keep in touch to see how fabulous our recovery is after surgery. Where are you having your done? I'm at Crawford Long in Atlanta...

    Diabetes and "the powder".....

Thanks for your responses. You've both given me great information to get off to a good start after surgery. I was SO surprised that protein could affect the kidneys the way it does. Can you believe I tried the Atkins diet to help with my diabetes...wow, the human body is really amazing.
  25. I've got to talk to my doctor about this, but I was interested in what other diabetics were doing with protien powders. Many people on this site swear by them, but I just learned that too much protein can over-work the kidneys. Wow, news to me!!! Do any diabetics here use protein powder in their shakes, or do you only stick to small amounts of meat? My bloodwork already indicates my kidneys have been affected by years of type 2 diabetes. Maybe I should just try to stay away from it..... Oh yeah, I haven't been banded yet (May 13th date....) but I'm trying to change my eating habits now for a smoother transition.
