1/17/14 My PCP talked to me about lapband a couple of years ago but my husband was absolutely against it. He told me that he would be supportive of my weight loss attempts in our food changes as he felt like he was a part of my diet sabotage because he didn't like the foods that I had to eat, and didn't like me having to fix two meals. I am sure that his food choices and the fact that he loves comfort foods (and I love to cook) had a part in it but that was not my main issue.
I finally came to the decision to seek out a consult after one of my best friends has been a year out from her gastric bypass and I have seen her results and know her story personally. My current weight is 223 and I wasn't sure if that was 'enough' to talk about a weight loss surgery but wanted to know what Dr. Davidson had to say - and I wanted my husband to be there so he could hear too as he was still not a supporter of surgery. Almost all of my maternal family is a diabetic. I am not ... yet. And I don't want to be. My brothers are. My aunts are. My cousins are. I see myself headed for that if I don't do something about my weight. I am not hugely active which contributes to my weight. I am able to walk long distances, I participated in a Run for God program with my church and can complete 5K's. But I hurt afterward for days. I have fibromyalgia - and it is so hard to complete a vigorous workout when I know that I am going to hurt for days on end afterward. I have high cholesterol and on my last checkup was told that I have the beginnings of fatty liver disease. It was the thought that I could really become a diabetic that made me get my tail in gear and go see Dr. Davidson.
He told me that I was not asking about surgical intervention too soon. That he would have looked into it years ago. We discussed options and determined that the Sleeve is the way for me to go. I am not a good candidate for the bypass due to my mom having stomach cancer. We don't want to leave a stomach pouch in there that we can't scope and keep an eye on. I like the fact that you are not so nutrient and vitamin deficient after the sleeve as you can be after the bypass. I have had several abdominal procedures so we think the bypass would be much more complicated due to the scar tissue in there... So it is the Sleeve for me. I have a dr apt today with my GP for his sign off and approval. The psych consult and GI visits are in a few weeks. I hope to have surgery the end of February. So here we go!
