    Sleeve Surgery & Diabetes

I was type II on metformin, victoza and a small amount of daily lantus insulin. I stopped those prior to surgery while on pre-op liquid diet and hever resumed them. I just had an A1C test this week and my results were 4.8, from a high of 9.8 about 3 years ago.

    75 days post op

I am experiencing something similar down 40 lbs since surgery 78 days ago, and have been stuck for about the last 10 days with only a 2 lb loss in that time. Very frustrating, apparently not uncommon. I am going to try adding exercise and work at getting in more Water. Good luck!

    Curious About Soda

I was told that too but in talking with a woman whose husband had this surgery, she said he chose the sleeve because he could still have beer. So his surgeon is allowing that for his patients. I have had both diet and regular soda to no ill effects, but I have tolerated everything I've tried so far and feel fortunate in that. What I have found is I don't get the satisfaction from the soda that I used to, it tastes "off" and I find that fortunate as well because it used to have such a hold on me--clearly enough to still give it a try post surgery. Not getting the payoff that I used to will let me leave that in the past with other bad behaviors which got me in the position where I sought surgery.
  4. No pain, lots of nausea. No one offered a patch for that to me so only pain was from the dry heaves. I don't remember the recovery area, other than that brief waking up and telling them "I'm nauseous" and them handing be a bag to throw up in. Next thing I knew I was in my room, knew my friend was there, feel asleep again, woke up once thinking "I should tell her to go home" and then later they came in to do vitals etc. So for me, not much pain, but getting up and moving around made me nauseous, so maybe you'd better check into getting one of those patches!
  5. Yes, I will definitely spend more time working on this as this is where the weight loss battle is won or lost, in the battlefield of the mind. It will be an interesting exercise for me as we enter this Easter Holy Week, as I think that ultimately forgiveness will be what I need to release those hurts that continue from childhood so they no longer have the ability to influence my future behavior in negative ways.
  6. This article was very timely and helpful for me as I just had a very high calorie day yesterday and I had not made the connection that I was eating emotionally, I thought it was just boredom. But I do keep going to the same chocolate/peanut butter combination and I realized it occurs when I am feeling left out of activities that my family or friends are doing. Those feelings and my response go back to my childhood, so the next time I crave those cups, instead I can start to think about what it is I am really craving!
  7. My doctor just said something like "Patient will be having abdominal surgery and will need to be out of work until (then I put it 1 month out from my surgery)" I was back at work within two weeks, but it was nice to have the extra time built in in case I needed it.
  8. I have an HDHP so my deductible is 2750, but my employer puts 1800 in my HSA each year so my cost is $950 out of pocket and those dollars are paid from the HSA with additional pre-tax dollars that I put in, so I feel pretty happy with what I had to pay!

    Questions for my surgeon.

I asked what, if anything, (once he had begun surgery) would cause him to stop and not complete the surgery. Found out that had only happened twice in the thousands of surgeries he had performed once due to ascites (I think that was due to cirrhosis of the liver) the other was the patient was very large and he didn't feel he could complete the surgery safely.
  10. I work in a small organization and handle the HR function, I filled out my own forms which I then gave to my boss to "give" to me. I did it as a pre-caution in the event that I had a difficult recovery. We also require medical certification, however, your doctor can keep it vague and merely state you are under their care and will require time off of whatever duration works for you. My doctor said I may need up to 4 weeks, I was back to work today exactly 2 weeks after my surgery and honestly could have gone back earlier. I was out shoveling snow on Thursday, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend that! I had my computer at home and did a couple of things for my boss while I was out. As to needing an authorization to return to work, check into your employee handbook, we require one after 10 consecutive working days absent. I took advantage of the holiday and so was technically only out 9 days and didn't need one. We have lots of nosy people in my work community, but I've just continuously told anyone who asks that I was taking leave in order to take care of some personal things, I didn't even specify that they were medical things. I had also decided if anyone tries to probe further, I intend to say that I prefer to keep personal things on a need to know basis and that they don't need to know--said with a smile of course!
  11. My workplace requires medical certification for FMLA leaves, my surgeon just sent a statement on letterhead that I was having abdominal surgery, I didn't even ask him to be discreet since I had already confided in my boss and my subordinate who would need to cover for me while I was out, but I did really appreciate that they kept it vague so that at some future point no one could look in my HR files and then blab to others about what I had done. For anyone who directly asked about my leave, I just said I had some personal things to get taken care of.
  12. Guess I am his second surgery of the day! I am Feb 11th @ 11:30 AM Good luck, hope all goes well for you.

    2/11/2014

High Five that is my date too! Scheduled for 11:30 AM. I've even done far better on the 10 day pre-op diet that I figured I would. I had an experience today at work that took away any possible doubt (not that there really was any) about having surgery. I went to meet the temp who will be helping out during my absence and to bring her back to our department. She is truly as big around as she is tall and she had to stop four times to catch her breath. I was thinking I'd be training a new temp tomorrow because there is no way she will want to work here for two weeks if she has to walk that distance twice a day. I really need to be thankful I am working where I have the insurance to cover this and that they offer the paid time off as well. Truly a "there but for the Grace of God, go I" moment for me.
  14. Yes, I experienced something similar. I dismissed it out of hand when my doctor brought it up over a year ago, agreed to do the informational seminar when I saw her in August and was surprised to find myself crying while watching it online and again before sending in the paperwork they sent to me. I think, for me, it was a combination of disappointment that I had failed doing it "on my own" and fear of what will I do if I fail at WLS too? I can't say if this surgery is right for you, but I think it is right for me and I believe it will give me the best shot at having a healthier more active and enjoyable life. Best wishes for your decision!
