How is weight loss for people over 50?

Longhorn This is where I am hoping for Lap Band magic.... not gain the weight back! It was the depressing knowledge that I'd just gain the weight back and more that keep me away from diets the last few years. Then I heard about the LapBand =.

    Any September bandsters out there???

BIGBOY Everyday that passes it becomes more obvious to me where the port is because itfeels like a hard knot and the rest of my abdomen is much softer. I think I was really swollen before because my whole abdomen felt like a hard knot. VIKKI I cannot tell if the new you is the blonde or the redhead? Both look great. I'm sure ready for that first fill. Starting to eat too much. Also seems that I lose very slowly. I think getting on scale every day is good in that it helps monitor if you are gaining again. Thanks for your story. It's inspiring. WooWoo Last week I had horrid constipation. I took double doses of stool softener but that didn't help. I finally went to store and got that sugar free chocolate candy and that stuff will blow the s--t out of Superman!!!! At least that is how it effects me. Since then no problems.

How is weight loss for people over 50?

green I had read this book by Dr. Phil on weight loss and he said one of the first steps is to discard your fat clothes as you lose. It is sort of like burning the bridges. Also I know the baggy clothes thing is because I want to hide my shape. 9 years ago I lost a lot of weight and ended up with this gorgeous figure. I wanted to show it off then. Even started to wear those sexy panties, the ones with the strap in your butt, what do they call them? Well after several years like that I went through the stress of the divorce from hell. Lasted .... truth is it is still going on today. I ended up putting on 70 pounds which on my 5 foot frame looks very obese. The first thing I did when I started gaining the weight back was to dig out my fat clothes. Oh and all this new fat is around my middle too.
  6. Hi everyone. I've been doing some reading about how strong genetics influence our weight. Some people just can't gain weight while others cannot keep their weight loses off. This is why bariactric surgery is such a life savior. Also there is a miserable genetic disease that causes a person to feel hunger all the time. These people live in hell because they are always starving. These are the people who are obese as young children and become super obese as adults. Society needs to get it together and not be so judgemental.

yaya i'M THE SAME AGE YOU ARE. The next few years are so important health wise. I'd find a way to get the money (beg, borrow or steal) so you can have that surgery now. In MX the costs is $7,500. I went to Dr. Gonzales (I think he is the best).

GREEN :omg: BURN THE FAT CLOTHES IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!
  9. BLUE EYED That desire for food will come back too soon. I've got a fill coming up on the 25th and am hoping that it will put me back to the stage you are in.
  10. JESSIEL55 You'll not be sorry you choose Dr.G. You have plenty of time to prepare. I was wondering if I made a mistake by having mine done before the holidays. But, Not. I won't be able to eat a monster meal anyway. January is so perfect. You'll be able to make your New Years resolution AND KEEP IT!!!!! Every year I make one to lose weight and inevidably I don't keep it. This year I will be able to keep it. LOOKATMENOW that is an incredible accomplishment. I'd imagine it feels wonderful living with 150 less pounds. I've only lost a measely 15 pounds but it feels wonderful. NEWBLEW I think the whole thing is training. Like I still raid the refrig at midnight sometimes. I eat fast (think that is guilt) then I spend the next hour doubled up in pain. Next day I pull myself up by my bootstraps and eat right for a few days. The memory of the pain is too fresh in my mind not to. I think the good eating becomes a set in habit in time.

    Any September bandsters out there???

BigBoy, No I haven't had a fill yet. I'm due to get one on the 25th of this month. Yea it is really nice to get off the liquid stage. Aren't you in the soft food stage yet? RUBALCAVA the pain slowly goes away. I thought my portal was on the incision on my left side but now think differently. It seems to be under the long top incision. Once the swelling goes away (which mone has) you can feel it as a hard round area.
  12. Newblew I found eating slowly the most difficult thing to do. Everytime I glugged my food down I'd get stomach pains a bit afterwards. I still have problems there but am learning to eat really slow. Excersizing is another problem i need to overcome. It is too easy to put off, then before I realize it, the day is over. The diet coke will hurt your stomach big time. That becomes a super negetive reinforcement.

BigBoy I have a weakness for raviole too. The canned ones are the mushiest. Yesterday I put myself on regular food. Made a chicken stir fry. Real food tasted so good. I found that I couldn't finish the portion I had given myself. But, no tummy ache!!!
  15. Jesse here's the thread http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f11/anyone-heard-dr-francisco-gonzalez-tj-38041/index21.html#post584952 You can just go back in pages to read about others experience with him.
  16. Jesse Dr. Gonzales is the best. Everyone who goes to him is happy with his team. He makes it so simple and you don't feel like you are in a foreign country. You fly to San Diago and Laura is there waiting for you. She drives you to your hotel. Later she takes you to the clinic to meet Dr. Gonzales and the nutricionist (who is an MD).....The after care is wonderful. Cost is 7,500. I'll find the thread and you can read what people have to say.
  17. NEWBLEW My experience: after your banding you will not have any hunger and you;ll feel satiated on very little. If you overdo it you'll be in a lot of pain later. The pain is sort of a negetive reinforcement. The 'not satiated' feeling comes back after a few weeks. That is when you get your first fill.
  18. BLue eyedkitty Wait until you get a hiccup!!!! I started to get the hiccups twice during the first week out of surgery. One hiccup would get out then my body just shut down and wouldn't let another out. Congradulations on being banded. Wait to hear about your experience. I go to get my first fill with DR.G on October 25 or 26.
  19. hopefulme That is the main reason I got banded. I had developed all kinds of obesity related stuff. My body was falling apart. I felt the next thing would be diabetes if I didn't get rid of the weight. I've lost 10pounds so far and it is making a big difference on my health. I too want to live to 80 but would prefer 90 LOL.

INDIGO GIRL I'm inpressed. Walking 4 miles on the treadmill, what an accomplishment. I just came in from my walk and am working up to (someday) a mile. It is so hilly here that everthing is either steaply up or down...nothing flat. I was only to do one hill.

SOUTHERNGIRL There is a plastic surgery thread. I'm looking for a good PS surgeon in Mexico. When I lose the weight and stablize myself I hopefully will tighten up the face wrinkles and get rid of any turkey neck that may appear. I need to get the info now because I will have to save the money for the surgery.
  22. SkinnyDip That's great to have a wife to cook you up a tasty broth. She will probably be great to you after you are banded. The diet becomes super important then. It must be super frustating to have to get all those approvals, go through that whole process and still not have a set date for surgery. That's why I didn't go through my insurance. I found a great team in TJ Mexico and self paid.

BIGBOYTX I've found that the noncondensed soups taste great, especially because they are hot. Take the veggies, noodles out and purie them then toss back into soup. Last night I found that canned ravioli is very soft and worked (but I am banded 9 days before you were)
  24. ROBKC1943 & TARHEELLADYBUG:girl_hug: I'm 62 almost 63, and got banded on Sept 11. I felt like I was really doing something for myself. From the day I was banded (sept. 11) I figured THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW LIFE. Everything will change because I am determined that it will. As we age it seems that the capacity to go on living and living with our health becomes such a priority. Guess it is like the gold at the end of the rainbow. I feel like I am actively seeking that pot of gold. When I was young I figured that when i got old I wouldn't want to live anyway. BOY WAS I WRONG. The life force is as intense as ever. This surgery is a tool to help me bring that life force into reality.
