How is weight loss for people over 50?

DENISE Going carb free or close to it sends your body into big time weight loss. It kills hunger and all the cravings for carbs. After two weeks As you add the carbs back go slow and make it good carbs. Salads, vegetables, whole grain stuff and most fruits especially apples. Good luck.

NEWBLUE Anxiety does crazy things with your mind. You're going to a foreign country alone. That's how I went and about one minute with Laura set my mind at peace. Dr. V hurt his back and was laid up on Tuesday. Hopeing he is over it by now. You'll feel very comfortable with Dr. G He's quite good looking. I think the new expresion is 'They Rock!'

How is weight loss for people over 50?

BJean I just got back from Sierra Vista, AZ. I'd gotten a fill in MX yesterday. We camped last night in Tucson. This morning we drove to Sierra Viasta. We have friends who bought a house there. But as we were driving the friends, I went into throw-up-mode. My body kept regurgitating but only a little slim would come up. I'm barely eating anything. I figure if I can still drink water, it's all fine with me. About time I lost some weight!!!

Mehean, Judy2291, New Blew Thank You:girl_hug:. I saw Dr. G. yesterday for a fill. Laura mentioned that you (Mehean) had recently been in. This is my 2nd fill. I took 6cc on the first and 2.1cc on this one. I'm nicely restricted. But as we were driving home in the RV, I went into throw-up-mode. My body kept regurgitating but only a little slim would come up. I'm barely eating anything. I figure if I can still drink water, it's all fine with me. About time I lost some weight!!!:clap2: Judy2291 losing 10 pounds in a month is a fantastic loss. I'll bet those extra five will melt off. You don't feel much restriction? That is how I was after first fill.

I have no idea why your port is so deep, but, I had a curious thought. I think the port is attached to the top layer of the abdomen muscle. If that is so and you have a lot of extra fat over the muscle, wouldn't that make the port as deep as that fat layer? And if this is true, seems that as you lose weight, the fat shrinks and port seems closer. This could be way off but, as I feel my port it is in a part of the abdomen that has the least amount of fat. Perhaps yours is in a fattier area of the abdomen?
  7. I had similair thing happen after I got the band. I'm on 3 BP meds. I'd only lost about ten pounds. Everytime I stood up, after a 1/2 minute or so, I'd get so light headed and dizzy that I had to lean against a wall to keep from fainting. My PCP said my BP was way too low. He cut my meds in half. I hear that BP too low is real dangerous.

    Pasta Replacement!

I think I scraped out the raw insides and then cooked that.

    Pasta Replacement!

I would love to find those tofu noodles!! Small town here and not likely to find them except perhaps the health food store has them. Another Pasta replacement is spegetti squash. Just use the insides like pasta.

Hi, and thanks for the kind words. I go to Dr. G for my next fill on Tue. Dec 4. Am hoping this 2nd fill really works for me, because right now it takes a lot of food to reach the restriction point and I can eat anything. Thus it is easier to gain than lose.

Hoping to keep our thread going and to see how everyone is handeling the holidays :girl_hug: to you all

Crabcake I've noticed that the people I know who are alcoholic don't eat sweets very much. But, when they quit drinking they become sugar addicts.

Newblew Thank you for the kind words and concern. I decided to pull myself up by my bootstraps and keep plugging away at the diet. The Nephrologist felt that losing the weight was one of the best things I could do for myself and my health. When tough times like this happen, the support of all the wonderful people here on the forum makes all the difference in the world. 10 days until banding. WOW I remember when I was where you are. It seems like yesterday. You'll be so happy that you did it. I'll be in TJ on Dec.4th for my 2nd fill. That is just a few days before you are due down..right?

Thanks, the nephrologist wanted to see me today. He was a young doc. He said that he is reeally glad I got the lapband surgery and that it was the best thing I could have done for myself. He said when he was in med school that doing the gastric banding was a mess. The scars were like the panama canal and lots of infections so on. He said that was because the docs in the USA were new to it He said I have CKD stage 3. That means Cronic Kidney Disease stage 3 on a 5 stage scale. He told me that his job was to keep it from progressing. I had to go to hospital lab for some more labs and set up for a kidney imaging test. That's a sonic imaging, I think. Anyway, I am sooooo happy that I don't have to go into dialysis, at least not now. :whoo: Back to my diet. The doc said he was anxious to see what his scales will say every month.

South Beach diet is the best to follow. My PCP put me on it. Addiction to sweets is connected to spiking blood sugar, which leads to hunger and weight gain and can eventually lead to diabetes. If you follow the diet, the sugar cravings go away. To break the sugar addiction, you also have to avoid the foods that your body turns into sugar right away. The rate at which the body turns food into sugar is called the Glycemic index. The idea is for the body to turn food to sugar slowly so your blood sugar doesn't spike. For example Oat bran breads' GI is 68 while french baguette is 136. Or sweet potato is 63 while baked potato is 158!!! This really does work. Now it is time for me to follow my own advice. I ate really high GI foods for Tday and have been on a sugar binge since then. Congradulations on your no sugar day.:clap2:

Actually they say it takes a month. I'm like you, I can eat 3 or 4 of those 100calorie bars at a time. Recently I've stayed with the 15 calorie popcycles. I let myself pigout on them.

The doctor said was lucky to be alive. He said the next time I take an ACE inhibitor, I won't make it. Peanut allergy is a super tough one because peanuts seem to be in everything. ACE inhibitors are easy to avoid, they're just in BP medications. There is a hereditary link to angioedema? My sister just went on a bunch of BP meds and I mentioned the ACE inhibitor thing and a possible genetic reaction; in case there is such a thing. Asked her to tell her doc. I don't think she understood me.

I think it was after the allergic reaction. I'm not really sure as the doc had been watching my Creatinine level as it was raised somewhat, I didn't think much about it. Had me return often for bloodtests. Then the sudden spike. But I had been taking that medicine for almost a year before the angioedema happened. I have asthma, it had gotten bad for almost the whole yr I was taking the ACE inhibitor, also the severe diarrehea (I never told the doc about the diarrhea, because I figured the diarrhea would help me lose weight :omg:). Yep, I know, sometimes the desire to lose weight goes to the extremes. I quit the ACE inhibitor after the angioedema and my asthma cleared up and the diarrhea completely stopped. Then I made the allergy connection. I think I am going to get copies of my labs. I'd like to know when this all began myself.

My blood pressure has been under control for quite some time. but, oddly enough, it began plundging down a month or so before my surgery and then dropping to 92/55 or so...doc has been pulling a lot of the BP meds. Now I am at a nice stable 114/62 or so. The nephrologist comes from ABQ to Silver City once or twice a week. My doc has set me up with him. I'm going to find out in morning. I am going for a fill on Dec.4. so I'll have to make sure that I don't see specialist on Mon. afternoon thru Wed. next week. ONe thing I am curious about is that I had a severe allergic reaction to ACE inhibitor type BP medicine. The reaction had been going on for some time (diarrhea and cough), then I woke one day with a severly swollen lip. It spread to my toungue and throat. Very serious and called angioedema. Doc said I was lucky to be alive. I'm wondering if that could have damaged my kidneys??? Thank you for the concern. Yea, I'm scared. I didn't realize that people don't live long on dialysis until I researched it. :cry

I've been on a depressed pigout for days now. Has to do with depressing health problems. I found out today if I just eat some meat, nothing else, it fills me up and stops the cravings. Another thing is that after I eat a meal, I have this terrible craving for water. I found if I just let an ice cube melt in my mouth it takes that craving away.

No I'm not diabetic and I do have hypertension but have had it under control for years. My creatinine level was a little raised 4 months ago then the sudden jump just came out of the blue. CRISTENE YNG thanks for the hug.

:help:When I am real stressed, I go on eating binges. My blood creatinine has been high and my LDL (bad) cholesterol took a major jump. It went from ideal to 179 for LDL. Doc retested me and both were a tad worse. It's the creatinine that the doc is real worried about. I did a 24hr urine collection to see how much creatinine my kidneys were excreting. Friday, I got my answer...I failed. :sick Creatinine lets the doc know how my kidneys are functioning. They are setting up appointment with a nephrologist for me. Scares the sh-t out of me. Hopefully if I need dialysis, it will be just temporary and my kidneys will jump back in there. Anyway I went into pig-out mode for the weekend. All I wanted to do was eat and sleep. I just didn't care. This morning I realize that I must pull myself together and get back on the 'wagon'. It's at times like this that the support we get from forum is so beneficial.
