How the Lap-Band actually works, fills and refills
NM Sunshine replied to Wendell Edwards's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
With my first fill, I was really dissapointed as I could eat about anything and eat a lot. I thought I'd never get to experience what others do who have a good restriction. Then along came the second fill (last tue) and I sure am experiencing the whole gamut....throwing up, sliming, pbing and restriction big time. It is like all the warnings on what and how to eat are major important now. When it happens you will know. I have a 10cc band and my 1st fill was 6.5cc, my 2ed fill 2.1cc I can certainly see how as you get good restriction those incriments get smaller and smaller with each fill. Also my surgeon told me that sometimes the body absorbs some of the fill. -
How is weight loss for people over 50?

Denise Last night I thought I begin into the mushie stage so I ate a piece of banana. Ate very slow and chewed until it was mush in my mouth. I must have eaten several bites when I felt very full. An hour later, I started on my chopped up pills. Got them down and a few minutes later I began sliming and then threw up the medicine. So I'm going back to chicken broth today. Think I just have to take it slower. I slept flat on bed fine. -

Linetta It's that full feeling that you get once your fills are at that 'sweet spot' that is so great. You don't crave the food cause you're satiated. I consider the Lap Band a gift I gave myself. It really feels that way. -

Denise drowning while asleep had to be frightening. I am able to get water, and soups down. So I think I am OK. The pain is still there but it is growing less. I'm researching erosion and slippage to get a feel for any warning. -
POLL Does Everyone Lose Their Hair??
NM Sunshine replied to KariK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
No hair loss. 31/2 months since band -
I had trouble with heartburn every single day. After the banding, I've not had heartburn, not even once. That was a nice surprise for me.

Denise Water coming up while you were sleeping sounds scary. How long did you wait before you got a defill? I don't have any problem with anything coming up when I lay down nor have I had heartburn. I just tried to eat some yogurt but it sends those belches up that is like pbing. I'll go back to liquids. I do fine with cream of mushroom soup. I can even soak a few crackers in it. How long do you think is too long before slippage or erosioin becomes a problem? -

Cristine YNG What started all this off was taking my pills without breaking them up. Before the fill I could eat anything and take the pills whole. Not so now. I think they may have ulcerated something....i'm getting better each day. -

NewBlew That antibiotic tastes BITTER:wof: I ended up putting them in a little pudding and swollow down. I'm :rockon:happy that you are officially a bandster. Sounds like a lot of your worries were taken care of. My cell worked in MX the service is Alltel. Sprint also works as far as I know. Glad to hear that you are back and all went well. -

PHYL and INDIGO Our govenor, Bill Richardson is also running but, no one ever hears about him. Guess he's not good media stuff. The man would make a wonderful president. We've had him for govenor for a long time and he is tops. Also presidents use him to commmunicate with problem area leaders. Often he's the only one they will communicate with. The media controls this whole presidential thing.... just pisses me off.:angry herghost taking my pills are my biggest problem. I take an awful lot of them and most cannot be crushed. That's because they are time released. Guess it is dangerous because I'd get overdosed. I just don't know if my problem is being too tight. When I swollow something (even water sometimes) I can feel a pain like an ulcer when the food hits the pouch. It does seem to be getting better. To top all this off, I picked up a nasty virus in one of the planes I was on. Everyone was coughing all around me.:sick PHYL :clap2:congradulations!!! My scale is nuts I think. It's an expensive digital one. Two days ago it said I had lost 2 pounds since the fill. Today it is up and says I lost one pound. How can I be starving myself and lose one pound??????????? But, sometimes when I weigh in at docs I get a nice surprise as his will say I am 4 pounds lighter than my scale says. -
HELLO, any oldies out there? I'm almost 63 and want to live.
NM Sunshine replied to FatAttack's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
PHYL and robkc1943 I checked my surgeon on it and he said each case is different. That it depends on her health. I was 62 when mine was done. I too wish I'd have done it earlier, but didn't know I had that option. -

Hi, I've changed my handle from fatattack to nm sunshine. Everyone though fatattack was too negetive. I know a lady who is 72 has diabetes and wants to be banded. Think she'll have a hard time getting a doc to do it? -

INDO 500 pounds awesome!!!! But, what if they start putting it back on???? That's what most of us did, yo yo. One of the main reasons I got the band was that I could keep it off and not yo yo. Yes, WLS or on own, transfer addiction effects both. -

INDIGO Last night Laura (she's part of my surgeons' team) called me, asking me how I was doing and if I had any problems. She told me to go on liquids only and she will be calling back today. If I don't get better one of the docs will call me. She said I could call her anytime day or night. I feel like I am in good hands. I cut my pills way down and spend the day taking a few of the cuts at a time. It does feel much better today. What are the dangers of being too tight? Couldn't I just stay on liquids and lose enough weight for the band to lossen on it's own? -

PHYL I'd jump up and down celebrating if I had someone doing all the cooking. My DH tries to cook sometimes, but it's not very edible. Wish I could develop a 'transfer addiction' with excersize. Just don't have it in me. On restriction, I never was really restricted before. I never had nausea, PBing or sliming. I was very anxous to have that. My weight loss was soooooooo slow. Now I have those things. Last night I ate two fruitsicles. On the second one I could feel pressure in chest, then burps and finally slime. Now I understand what everyone is talking about. It still hurts in my pouch when I drink something, but not as bad. On liquids only. INDIOGIRL I agree with you. I never watch daytime TV but someone told me Oprah was covering gastric banding yesterday. I felt like she should have shown people who had gone a healthy route with WLS. I didn't know she was down on WLS. Perhaps she is doing some projecting of her negitive side. -

It took 2 fills to pull me out of bandster hell. I had that 2nd fill 4 days ago and it is working almost too much. I can't take anything except liquids and only a small amount. But, I think I have some swelling. I can feel it going down today. I'm so excited about having restriction. -
Doctor overfilled me and refused to help me
NM Sunshine replied to sar's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
SAR Do you mean $85,000 for lap-band surgery? The surgeon who did my band charges $7,500. He did a great job and fills are free for life. Also someone on his team calls me after surgury and after fills to see how I am doing. If I have any questions or concerns, the MD on his team responses right back to me. I was banded in Tiajuana MX and know I a more experienced surgeon than in the US. I'm very sorry to read about your problems. -

Denise. I'm not sliming now. It just hurts at the bottom of my esphogus and top of pouch, as I feel the food going in. Water anything. But I take only a small amount at a time. If I took more I think I'd start heaving. My ribs actually hurt from throwing up the other day. Protein drinks, veggie drinks, water that will be my diet for a few days and see how it all goes. WOW 8 pds in a week. I've lost 2 pounds -

FOOD--- we need to make sure we get some good oil (fat) in our system. Olive oil, canola and nut oils. Sometimes for salads I make a dressing out of wine venigar, olive oil and spices. Also I found this unique microwave plate that makes omelets in the microwave. I put eggbeaters on both sides and cook a bit then layer cheese and stuff on top...cook a tad. Flip over and I have an omlet. -

:girl_hug:MOMLAMBERT AND DENISE Laura (my doctors assistant) called me tonight to see how I was doing. She said that I need to stay on just liquids. She will call me tomarrow to see if I am doing better. I should be able to progress on mushies tomarrow afternoon. Denise, if I am too tight, I will stay on liquids and lose weight which will loosen the band. Hoping I can do that as I have to fly to Tiajuana for pulling some fluid out. Yes I remember you were having a lot of problems and had some fill taken out. :thinkSLACTACTION Yes you must count your calories, all liquids with calories. Liquids with calories can stop you from losing weight more than solid food on the band. Protein first, then vegetables and carohydrates last (if ther is any room left). Save all liquids until at least a half hour after eating or before eating. Liquids with the meal cause the food to turn soupy and leave the pouch fast. EVERYONE Did anyone see Oprah today??? It was about gastric bypass surgery and people who have lost hundreds of pounds becoming alcoholic. They hadn't taken care of their emotional stuff about fat. Very interesting. -

:help::help::help::help:I had a fill on Tue. my total is 8.6 on a 10cc band. I didn't get home until midnight so I didn't eat anything except my evening pills which I didn't cut up. The next morning I took my morning pills uncut and shortly after that began having the dry heaves. They were nonproductive and quite violent. Since then I've been unable to eat anything solid. If I try to eat solids I get pain and nausea. I get the pain even when I drink a sip of water. The pain is right at the line on chest where my breasts end. I can feel something going down and it goes into stomach pouch or at the junction of the esphagus and stomach. Has anyone ever had this???? What is it????? I wonder if I ulcerated something with the bigger pills????? -
Incidents of Violence in Mexico
NM Sunshine replied to transformer's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I went to Tiajuana on Dec. 4th. for a fill. While riding from the clinic to border I saw 2 different Mexican police pickup trucks filled with 5 or 6 policemen holding military rifles. I notice the newspaper article was on Dec. 1 as I understand the government doesn't want Americans harmed. It would hurt their tourism. I'd say they went to some strong measures. -
How the Lap-Band actually works, fills and refills
NM Sunshine replied to Wendell Edwards's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a 10cc band. After surgery I felt restrictioin for a week or two then felt non. I went in for 1st fill in late Oct. Doc gave me 6.5 cc's I wasn't able to feel much restriction at first, then none. I'd lost only 10 pounds since pre-surgery. Thinking that the band wasn't going to work for me, left me very discouraged.:cry I got my 2nd fill on Tue. Dec.4, 2.1 cc's WOW is this one working.:clap2: It's working a bit too much as it is difficult to take water, but chicken broth isn't bad. I get a strong pain and nausea with sliming with most food. It was so bad on wednesday that my ribs hurt from the throwing up. Have already taken off 2 pounds in 3 days. If my band stays like this, that is fine with me as I figure water is essential.
